In honor of Adopt-A-Senior-Pet Month, we'd like to share Moxie's story with you.

At around 10 years old, Moxie's owner passed away and she was left homeless with a myriad of medical conditions. The good folks at HumaneCNY graciously took her in, gave her the treatment she needed and asked for a foster that could give her twice daily insulin injections.

I figured why not? It wasn't something I had done before but figured if she could learn to take injections, then I could learn to give them. Moxie made it easy. She would come running for her injections and quietly stand for them because she knew a meal would follow :)

The plan was always just to foster her but it was soon apparent that there was very little interest in an aging diabetic so we figured since she wasn't going anywhere, why not make it official.

Moxie fought and beat two episodes of mammary cancer and lived with diabetes, IBS and bouts of pancreatitis. Despite all of it, she remained energetic, feisty and full of antics that had us laughing daily. She loved to break into cat or dog food (she wasn't discriminating) if it wasn't double and triple secured. She'd steal bread out of the toaster, muffins from the lazy susan and somehow managed to defeat all child proof locks. Apparently child proof does not equal Moxie proof.

She was obsessed with socks. Every day she would find a wayward sock and carry it around the house with muffled meows. She would always bring them to us or drop them near us.

It took a while for her to accept petting. In fact, anyone new to the house was given the 3 pet rule. If you pet her 4 times, it was at your own risk. In the end she was incredibly loving with our family, tolerant of the other cats and dogs and really, just the most incredible companion.

We said goodbye to Moxie this week. It was time. She fought so hard for so long and her body just couldn't do it anymore though I'm sure if it was up to her spirit, she would have lived forever.

Moxie was a force of nature. She swept into our lives with glorious cattitude and she left quietly, taking a piece of our hearts with her.

If you're ever on the fence about adopting a senior pet, go for it. We packed a lifetime into 4 years and I, for one, don't regret a single moment of it. I only regret that now I'll have no more socks to pick up off the floor.

Fly high sweet Moxie, fly free of pain and towards all of the muffins you can stuff in that little fuzzy belly. We love you. Always.

HELP YOUR DOG ENJOY THE GOLDEN YEARS

🐾 MOVEMENT
Exercise for senior dogs can include walks, swimming and movement-based games at home. In addition to these, exercises designed to improve strength, balance and flexibility can help keep your old dog feeling young. Always consult with your veterinarian on what type of activity is appropriate for your dog first.

🐾 SNIFFING
Sniffing is a natural behavior for dogs with many benefits. It can be a form of stress relief, provide information about the environment and create endless enrichment opportunities. You can take your dog on a sniffari or create scenting opportunities at home.

🐾 INDEPENDENT ENRICHMENT
Daily enrichment can keep your dog from becoming bored. Though seniors may have less stamina than their younger counterparts, it doesn't mean they won't benefit significantly from these activities. Consider food stuffed toys, puzzles and scatter feeding. These are excellent tasks for seniors who may have reduced senses and mobility as you can modify the activities to suit your individual dog's needs.

🐾 TRAINING
Learning new skills through reward-based training techniques can be fun, help strengthen your relationship with your senior dog and be useful! Training sessions don't need to be lengthy or complex to be beneficial. You can work with your dog on anything from simple tricks to age appropriate dog sports and cooperative care. Basically anything that fits with your dog's physical abilities.
