I’m Josie Sanderson, a Hoofcare Professional based in South Cumbria and covering Cumbria, North Lancashire and North Yorkshire. If you’re not sure if I cover your area, please just get in touch and I can advise, and if I can’t come out to you I may be able to put you in contact with other professionals in your area.

I’ve ridden horses since starting lessons aged 10 and always been interested in the horses themselves and their wellbeing and happiness. I’m very lucky to live in a beautiful part of the Lake District now with my husband, two fell ponies Bluebell and Reiver and our rescue pony Kiwi.

About 2 and a half years ago I decided to train as a barefoot trimmer, and I was especially lucky that Sarah Oliver of Dare2Bbarefoot was willing to share her time and vast knowledge with me 🥰

Alongside becoming one of Sarah’s apprentices, I enrolled on the internationally recognised Liberated Horsemanship Hoofcare training program, through which I have travelled to the US (Arizona) to attend classroom and practical teaching, and also had field instruction and mentoring with highly skilled UK trimmers. It’s been a busy couple of years going out with Sarah and also finding time for personal study to gain the knowledge and experience I needed, but it was truly worth it to now be doing something I love and being able to help horses.

The Liberated Horsemanship program has high standards, and trimmers have to demonstrate they’ve been working competently for a minimum of 6 months before they can even take their exams. Having reached this stage I’m looking forward to taking my exam in early 2024 to become a fully certified Hoofcare professional with such an amazing organisation.

Whilst working towards my full CHCP certification, I also take continuous development very seriously. This year as well as attending 2 days of practical CPD, I have completed a L4 Equine Anatomy and Physiology qualification (equivalent to 300 study hrs) I will also be attending the Horses Inside Out Growth & Development conference in February. It’s really important that the professionals you trust your horse’s care to are gaining new knowledge and are aware of developments in a whole range of equine fields, so don’t be afraid to ask anyone working with your horse what continued training they’re going to be doing this year.

The natural trim is a method of balancing a horse’s hoof back to the parameters of how it would be worn if he or she were living in their aboriginal habitat, travelling many miles a day. By doing it this way we allow the foot to take on an optimal shape for free movement and soundness. The structures within the foot can function as nature intended and the hoof will be strong without the need for shoes to artificially take the foot out of contact with the ground.
Horses who have experienced issues such as laminitis, body imbalances, or unresolved soundness issues are helped by following this protocol. The management of the horse is also highly important alongside the trim, and I’m happy to share with my clients what I know about beneficial lifestyle, diet and exercise regimes for their horses.

If you’d like to know more about me, the natural trim, or to book an appointment, please message me and I will be happy to help.

The rather beautiful Kered Caravaggio (sire to Kered Smokey Joe) originally came to me for some handling but its safe to say I've fallen in love with him so am in the process of buying him from his breeder. He's such a kind little stallion who has taken to his change of home and education surprisingly well and has struck up a firm friendship with my big lad! ❤️

Next up!My first mare. The beautiful Llanfrechfa Dancing Queen ❤️ Hopefully in foal to Kered Caravaggio due Spring 2024.

The first introduction just has to be my first pony!

Kered Smokey Joe
by Kered Caravaggio out of Liddesdale Spring Sunshine.

Born 26/04/22 and came to me in October 2022 from Kered Stud. Colour tested smokey black carrying the cream gene. Shown twice as a foal very successfully and maturing into a very nice, well handled c**t 💙
