I am a lesson horse.
I am a horse that isn’t as recognized as the top hunter jumpers, the best western pleasure horse, or the 1D barrel horse, I am a lesson horse. I am the backbone of the foundation to do all of those things. I am a lesson horse.

I am not loved by one person. I am loved by several people. I don’t have my person, I have my people. I am a lesson horse.

I will teach your child and yourself more than just to ride. I will bring your child out of their shell. I will teach your child about life. I will be yours and their shoulder to cry on. I am a lesson horse.

I will bring my family the joy of teaching kids. I will bring my families business growth. I am so loved by my family, even if they don’t express it everyday. My family allows others to show me love and enjoy me. I am a lesson horse.

At the end of your childs’ journey on a lesson horse, they will out grow me. They will find one that jumps higher, a horse that is show quality, a horse much faster than me. But, I will never outgrow being a lesson horse. I will be the one that loved your child and helped your child grow into the rider and person they are. I am a lesson horse.

At the end of my time as a lesson horse; I will be covered in grey hair. Each grey hair came from each hour I spent as a lesson horse. I will be in a field of green grass, I will be taken care of as I was when I was a lesson horse. I will watch your child from across the pasture love her new horse. But, I will love your child more than any horse can. I will be the backbone of the business, the family, and your child. Don’t forget about me, I am a lesson horse.

Start Your Month Off On the Right Hoof.

Need some adult time?
What about adult time with horses?

These awe-inspiring, large, powerful animals draw us towards them in facinating ways.

The potential of what horses can achieve in Equine Facilitated Learning, is astounding.

The horses' wonderfully powerful insights and intuitions about what each person needs never ceases to amaze me.

Horses, when allowed, can give each one of us gently guidance, they can remind us to take better care of ourselves and each other, They can bring us wisdom that flows naturally from their finely tuned intuition and authentic way of being. They can also remind us of how to stay present and balanced, to conserve our energy for when we really need it, and to become more mindful, just as they are.

Once a month, usually the first or second Sunday of the month we gather around the barn and the horses.
Every time is different and everyone gets something out of it.

In October, we gather on the 13th at 10 am.

Make Them Carry Their Saddle

Why we teach Horsemanship vs. just Horseback Riding at Faewood Equestrian.

Sometimes parents get concerned about the amount of time that is spent catching, grooming, and saddling the horse vs the actual time in the saddle.

Riding horses is a combination of strength, timing, and balance. Kids in this country are physically weak (unless they are actively involved with weight training and physical conditioning several times a week.)

When you walk out to the field or the paddock, you are clearing your stress from being under fluorescent lights all day. Kids (people) spend a lot of time on computers and iPads and are generally disconnected from their environment. So walking out to the field starts the process of decompressing and relaxing, and we can enter into the present moment. And as your body moves on uneven surfaces, it strengthens your legs and core.

Leading your horse to the barn helps you connect with your horse and establishes a relationship of care and empathy - which is so important for a good time on the horse. Just being in the vicinity of a horse will allow your heart and your horse’s heart to sync and thus help your heart to beat slower, making you feel more relaxed and calm.

Horses are masters at mirroring our emotions back to us. So slowing down before we get on the back of these powerful creatures is a very good idea.

When you groom your horse (especially currying), you are toning your arms and stabilizing your core.

When you carry your saddle, your arms, chest, and back are doing isolated strengthening work.

When you ride at a posting trot you are exercising equivalent to a slow jog calorie burn wise.

After a lesson, the riders and the horses are physically tired and mentally quiet and balanced.

And since riding such large and somewhat unpredictable animals can be hard sometimes, it makes you resilient, teaches patience and empathy and sometimes pushes your expectations and limitations.

Working with horses is so much more than learning how to ride - taking care of them, providing what they need, and making sure they are happy and healthy is hard work.

So yes, we make our our students groom their horses and carry their saddles. We don’t do the hard parts for them, as long as they are safe and it actually doesn’t hurt them. To advance with their riding, they must get stronger. You can help with the parts they cannot reach.

We love every one of our students and it is our mission to develop a new generation of horsemen/women that see their horse as a partner and a friend.
