The year was 2002, USARK didn't exist and the Florida Reptile Industry had just dodged a bullet when a situation surrounding a pet tortoise popped up in 2000/2001 that almost brought the industry to a full stop. The pet tortoise was taken in to University of Florida Vet Clinic for a routine exam, and was found to have a tic on it, of a subspecies that could carry Heartwater disease, which can be devastating to cattle and cervidae to my knowledge, our white tailed deer here in Florida. This almost brought the Florida Reptile Industry to a STOP. BUT, regulators helped us, stakeholders really showed up, and we overcame what was a SERIOUS situation and were able to get back to business with new relationships and knowledge gained. The folks mostly on the import side had to adopt some new procedures but overall I believe this is looked upon as a success story and we certainly appreciated the partnership that came from many areas. I was a small part of a large group of concerned reptile folks. The years have gone quickly!
