The pancreas is a difficult organ for most novice sonographers to image. Here are 2 remarkable ultrasound images of a feline pancreas. These images were collected from a sick cat so I've listed the changes that were noted (with a layman's description).

The changes play a role in this particular patients pancreas looking this way. The pancreas can look sonographically different in every patient in terms of echotexture, echogenicity and architecture. But it's anatomical location and general shape are always the same

Pancreatic changes for this individual:
- Mild generalized enlargement. (overall the pancreas is larger than a healthy cat)
- Moderately hypoechoic and slightly heteroechoic parenchyma. (This pancreas is more uniformly dark in appearance than a healthy cat's would be)
- Moderately echogenic bordering mesentery. (The tissues surrounding the pancreas are brighter than usual, which is a sign of inflammation)

An example of Mirror Image Artifact. Mirror image artifact in ultrasonography is seen when there is a highly reflective surface (e.g. diaphragm) in the path of the primary beam. This image is of a gallbladder which resides tucked up in the liver near the diaphragm. The ultrasound is creating the artifactual appearance of a second gallbladder. (This is the same image from last weeks comparison between Urinary Bladder and Gallbladder).
