About Us
How it All Began

The National Shoot-to-Retrieve Field Trial Association’s field trials were started by a group of dedicated bird hunters who were looking for a way to extend the fun they enjoyed with their bird dogs after their season ended. They not only extend the season, they also provide a sportsmanlike environment where they can compete with others who enjoy bird dogs. The Associati

on was incorporated in 1978, and is a non-profit association with service to the members and sportsmanship as its goals. There are currently 31 NSTRA Regions serving our members in the lower 48 States and Canada. More information on the history of NSTRA can be found at our display in the National Bird Dog Museum – Field Trial Hall of Fame – Wildlife Heritage Center located in Grand Junction, Tennessee. The NSTRA Field Trial

NSTRA sanctioned Field Trials are open to all pointing breed dogs and are conducted under conditions closely resembling actual wild bird hunting. They are conducted by clubs and individuals throughout the country. Placements are recorded and Champions are recognized by NSTRA. Over fourteen hundred sanctioned trials are conducted each year. NSTRA also conducts 5 Championship Trials – Quail Invitational, Trial of Champions, Grand National Invitational, Endurance Classic and Dog of the Year. Spectators may view NSTRA trials from the gallery. They are not allowed in the field with the handlers. Most local trials start between 7-7:30 a.m. Championship Program

Championship points are awarded at all recognized NSTRA trials depending on the number of dogs entered. At full trials (32 dogs max.) 3 points are awarded for first place, 2 points for second and 1 point for third. When a dog accumulates a total of 18 points, with at least 9 points from first place finishes, a Championship Certificate is issued. The Scoring System

The rules of NSTRA are easy to understand and score. Points are scored for each find and each retrieve, as well as the dog’s first back. The dog is judged on his ground coverage and obedience throughout his running. the scores are posted on the scoreboard after each brace. The dog with the highest score at the end of the trial is the winner. NSTRA judges are knowledgeable of bird dogs and are very familiar with the NSTRA rules. The New Standard of Excellence

The outstanding characteristics of each pointing breed are enhanced through NSTRA field trials. Judging is by qualified judges with thorough knowledge of the various breed characteristics. The NSTRA concept of field trials emphasizes the complete bird dog, from point to retrieve. There are no penalties* for mistakes, only positive judgment for bird work that is done properly. Successful NSTRA dogs are excellent hunting dogs. Fun for All Ages

Family involvement is NSTRA involvement. Our youngest competitors are in their early teens and our oldest are in their 80′s. NSTRA handlers may do their own gunning or elect to have a friend fun for them. We are proud to have many father-son and father daughter teams participating, not to mention the many women handlers who are just as competitive as the men. The only prerequisite for participation is the desire to enjoy competitive bird do***ng in a sportsmanlike manner.

SoCal NSTRA wrapped up our season this month in notable fashion. Notable in the sense that it was cold in May, and likely because we were blessed with Chad Norpel and Jean Steiner and no matter the time of year when someone from ND comes to CA it ends up being cold which we all appreciated.

While speaking of being blessed I would like to thank Jenny Tomlin for Marshaling the event, Ron Knesal for driving 20 hours for birds and planting them, Lauren Prowse for cooking everything for the big event and Christy Abshire, Kevin Green, and the Tomlin’s for providing breakfasts and lunches during and after the trial. As for the winners.

This year marked the 2nd anniversary of our 4 day Two Bitch Bourbon dog trial Feb 16-19 for which the first two days was a Regional Challenge between NorthWest and SoCal Regions. SoCal lead the battle 11 wins to 10 and unfortunately we had to cancel the 4th day due to weather.

The following people/groups deserve a big shout out!

-First we would like to thank our sponsors Two Bitch Bourbon.

- The NorthWest crew setup 100% of the trial grounds for this event including putting up the event tent. Dan McMahon I’m fairly certain you will be the last person I ever see riding a bike around setting up and repairing flags, poles, quads, etc.

- Lauren Prowse (SC) for managing entries, setting up draws, handling all of the adjustments via bye list, hunting down people for payments, reconciling everything while marshaling 2 days.

- Preston Cleaver was exceptional at planting these Chukar at speeds allowing us to have 16 braces during the winter with time to spare.

- Jenny Tomlin marshaled 1 day and like Lauren kept people in check and ready to go on time for the next brace making sure we got all 16 braces in on time as well as writing up all the boards and cards.

- Angie Bañuelos (NW) for making food 3x a day for the entire trial. My personal favorite by far was the tacos I can’t pronounce.

- Nelson Bañuelos (NW) for paying $300 to have bird person meet Cameron Cole (MN) 1/2 way to pick up the crates Cameron was sent and put together. These crates for the record are a nightmare to put together so thank you for doing this.

- Mike and Malane Smith (NW) for going out of their way to spend extra time on a very long ride from Washington to pick up the Chukar 3 hours out of their way.

- Ginger, Bobby, and Rocco (WT) for putting together such a great blind raffle gift raising about $300.

- Dave and Roxanne Dower’s (NW) for donating a buckle for high point raising about $300 by those who entered in the opportunity to compete for it. Dale Ikuta won with Odan.

- Angie, Nelson, Lauren for meeting with me 2-3x a week for over a month to make sure we got this trial right.

- All of the judges. This is the first trial I have ever chaired where I didn’t need to text or call a single judge. They all reached out on their own offering to help and we had more people offer to judge than we even needed which is unheard of.

- Wendy Williams and Chuck Asher for taking pictures.

- Amber Prowse for designing shirts and hoodies for the event and printing them.

- I would like to thank everyone who brought excellent raffle items as well as spent money on such items to help raise funds for a new quad and our next years operating expenses.

Thanks everyone,
Mitch Prowse and Nelson Bañuelos

Several weeks ago SoCal NSTRA, and North West NSTRA provided the handlers to aid California Game and Fish in this exceptional Junior hunt for 52 kids. We are always so fortunate to have the support of Lazzy Arrow Adventures to provide all the land to put on this hunt.

From NorthWest NSTRA thank you Nelson Bañuelos and Cameron Cole.

From SoCal NSTRA thank you Moe Davis, Nathan Headlund, Lauren Prowse, Dave Ragan, and Mitch Prowse.

Interesting podcast with Scott Linden and Bill Sumpter regarding NSTRA.
