SoCal NSTRA wrapped up our season this month in notable fashion. Notable in the sense that it was cold in May, and likely because we were blessed with Chad Norpel and Jean Steiner and no matter the time of year when someone from ND comes to CA it ends up being cold which we all appreciated.

While speaking of being blessed I would like to thank Jenny Tomlin for Marshaling the event, Ron Knesal for driving 20 hours for birds and planting them, Lauren Prowse for cooking everything for the big event and Christy Abshire, Kevin Green, and the Tomlin’s for providing breakfasts and lunches during and after the trial. This year marked the 2nd anniversary of our 4 day Two Bitch Bourbon dog trial Feb 16-19 for which the first two days was a Regional Challenge between NorthWest and SoCal Regions. SoCal lead the battle 11 wins to 10 and unfortunately we had to cancel the 4th day due to weather.

The following people/groups deserve a big shout out!

-First we would like to thank our sponsors Two Bitch Bourbon.

- The NorthWest crew setup 100% of the trial grounds for this event including putting up the event tent. Dan McMahon I’m fairly certain you will be the last person I ever see riding a bike around setting up and repairing flags, poles, quads, etc.

- Lauren Prowse (SC) for managing entries, setting up draws, handling all of the adjustments via bye list, hunting down people for payments, reconciling everything while marshaling 2 days.

- Preston Cleaver was exceptional at planting these Chukar at speeds allowing us to have 16 braces during the winter with time to spare.

- Jenny Tomlin marshaled 1 day and like Lauren kept people in check and ready to go on time for the next brace making sure we got all 16 braces in on time as well as writing up all the boards and cards.

- Angie Bañuelos (NW) for making food 3x a day for the entire trial. My personal favorite by far was the tacos I can’t pronounce.

- Nelson Bañuelos (NW) for paying $300 to have bird person meet Cameron Cole (MN) 1/2 way to pick up the crates Cameron was sent and put together. These crates for the record are a nightmare to put together so thank you for doing this.

- Mike and Malane Smith (NW) for going out of their way to spend extra time on a very long ride from Washington to pick up the Chukar 3 hours out of their way.

- Ginger, Bobby, and Rocco (WT) for putting together such a great blind raffle gift raising about $300.

- Dave and Roxanne Dower’s (NW) for donating a buckle for high point raising about $300 by those who entered in the opportunity to compete for it. Dale Ikuta won with Odan.

- Angie, Nelson, Lauren for meeting with me 2-3x a week for over a month to make sure we got this trial right.

- All of the judges. This is the first trial I have ever chaired where I didn’t need to text or call a single judge. They all reached out on their own offering to help and we had more people offer to judge than we even needed which is unheard of.

- Wendy Williams and Chuck Asher for taking pictures.

- Amber Prowse for designing shirts and hoodies for the event and printing them.

- I would like to thank everyone who brought excellent raffle items as well as spent money on such items to help raise funds for a new quad and our next years operating expenses.

SoCal had an awesome three day trial this past weekend with another new Chairman Lauren Prowse who did great. We had a delicious food truck. Two new members. Two new judges completed their first day of judging - Thank you Christi and Kevin! The weather was cold but we still had a blast.

SoCal had a fun 3 day trial this past weekend. The weather was good, the food truck provided great BBQ and has agreed to come back going forward, and we had 26 different handlers run with an additional 20+ dog bye list. During the weekend we had 2 more judges get qualified with their ride alongs. Congrats Christi Abshire and Kevin Green, it’s nice to add you to our growing team of judges.

SoCal and NorthWest NSTRA provided the handlers for the California Chimineas Wild Junior quail hunt at the Chimineas Ranch in Carrizo Plains with California Game and Fish. 50+ birds for the kids in the morning hunt, and those with the energy to go back out for the afternoon hunt which didn’t limit out in the morning did just about as well. Thanks Timm Cleaver, Nelson Bañuelos, Nathan Hedlund and Mitch Prowse for representing NSTRA while investing in the future of the sport.

SoCal NSTRA hosted our first-ever four-day event attended by four regions in Lockwood Valley, CA, over Presidents Day weekend. A fifth region had attempted to participate but could not get through the 28-dog bye list. This event was co-hosted by two regions, SoCal (Mitch Prowse) and NW (Nelson/Angie Bañuelos), with a high degree of success. Challenges occurred as they always will and were quickly mitigated due to advanced exhaustive planning and preparation for any scenarios we might encounter, resulting in no impact on the trials.

The weather reflected a lovely spring day for Manitoba, and we were blessed to have no rain; otherwise, Mike Stotts surely would have buried another vehicle in the mud (LOL). Breathtaking meals were prepared from Friday through Monday (Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner) by Angie in a banquet-style fashion each day with the assistance of Morgan Cole, making sure judges and attendees were receiving timely notifications on meals being ready. One of our primary concerns had been getting through all the braces with limited daylight, and Jenny Tomlin was an absolute rockstar at ensuring there were no delays. Jenny was so effective in it that we even had enough time leftover each day for 19 braces if allowed, which this time of year leaves me speechless.

We were excited that we had new local members and many members from NSTRA who had never been to SoCal before. We are also amazed by the excellent sponsors for this trial, and with that, we would like to thank (Two Bitch Bourbon, Battle Born Metals - NSTRA Clocks Richi Hight, Asher Product - Electronic Backing Dog Chuck Asher) for helping us make our event successful. Additionally a big shout out to Nelson and Angie for donating all of the food and several hundred birds, and the Tomlin/McNamee families for matching some very large donations by the Bañuelos making for an extremely successful weekend showing just what the west can do when we put our forces together.

Looking forward to next year, and hopefully, we will get more folks coming out and joining us in our even larger trial we have begun planning.

Absolutely amazing. 58 dogs submitted for our Feb 18-20 3 day trial and I’ve been telling people it’s not even worth entering at this point with the bye list this week or the number would be deep into the 60’s with 3 weeks left to enter. Oh how times have changed, here comes the Open 64 format sooner than expected. On that note, I’ll be reaching out to the bye dogs here soon after I wrap up judging assignments and who or doesn’t have their dogs running when they judge.

The proceeds will help us seed the high costs of our 3 day trial in February. Ideally we would like to have steak dinners, and a buckle event so this will help cover the up front costs and replenish our cash flow from losses resulting from amateur and 12 brace trials. Feb should be an amazing trail. We will have trap shooting and a good party so remember to get your entries in before we fill up.

The new season will be upon us and we are starting out with the annual
Judges Seminar on Saturday September 6th.

This year Jim Wall and Mike Porter are your knowledgeable instructors.

This is a good way to learn more about the game and pick up tips,
or if you are considering becoming a judge.We always need more judges.
Existing Judges, if its been more that 3 years since your last seminar, its time to renew.

Sunday, September 7th will be the Training Trial–on both fields if needed.

These training days are for NSTRA members and their friends (who may be
interested in joining NSTRA). They can find out what we are all about–and take
advantage of this great opportunity to do some training. There will be no prizes
( trophies ); everyone’s a winner! So, please bring a friend!
