There are lots of different litter trays available, but many of them are not fit for purpose! So what is the best type of litter tray for cats?

Let's look at the options:

🐱Design

▪️Both hooded and open litter trays are available. Many people prefer hooded trays because they prevent litter from being scraped or tracked onto the floor, but they can limit your cat's movement when inside if they are too small.

▪️Hooded trays offer some privacy, but they can be an issue in multi-cat households, where cats can block each other from accessing the tray, or ambush each other after use.

▪️Hooded litter trays also hold the smell of soiled litter inside, which is great for us, but not so nice for a cat. Urine and faeces is 'out of sight, out of mind' meaning hooded trays may not cleaned as often as they should be.
I always say it's like us using a festival toilet every day, eww 🤢💩🤣

▪️The flap on the front of hooded trays can also deter cats from using them, so it's best to remove these altogether.

▪️If you do want to give your cat a hooded tray, remember to purchase the largest one possible and remove any soiled litter at least twice a day.

▪️Open trays provide a lot more room and have wide exit/entry point and/or multiple entry points, which is great for multi-cat households 👍

▪️Cats like larger trays (whatever type) as they provide more room for them to move around, dig and pass urine/faeces.

▪️Corner litter trays are usually too small for cats to use. They may seem convenient for us, but are not comfortable for cats.

▪️Automatic litter trays can be noisy, small and expensive - there are more cat friendly litter trays available 👎

🐱Size

▪️Cat behaviour experts recommend the ideal litter tray should be approximately 1.5 X the length of a cat from their nose to the base of their tail - that's pretty big!

▪️Other items such as storage containers (like the one on this post) can make excellent and inexpensive litter trays for cats.

Each cat will have their preference, so it's good to offer options until you know 👍🐈‍⬛

If you're out watering, change water multiple times.
I've had raccoons SITTING in my birdbath.
I also spray down a tarp so it puddles. The Sparrows love it and I've had a fisher enjoy a drink from it too.
We use 2 plastic trash barrel tops flipped and filled with water for the little guys too.

I see this quite often when a guest comes over and the cat parent tries to "convince" the cat that the person is friendly by forcing interaction or holding the cat. Always give your cat the option to decide whether to interact, be a bystander, or leave the room.
