BIOSECURITY: Poultry in Victoria.

AVIAN INFLUENZA: The current situation in Victoria, Australia:
As of the latest update on 27th May 2024, avian influenza has been detected at two Victorian poultry farms.
The first infected property near Meredith has the H7N3 strain, while the second infected property near Terang has the H7N9 strain.
Both properties have been placed in quarantine, and all poultry will be safely disposed of to destroy the infection.

Movement controls are in place within restricted areas around these farms, requiring all birds to be housed or kept enclosed in cages or sheds. Contact tracing is underway to determine the source and spread of the infection.

Risk to Humans: Cases of avian influenza in humans who have direct contact with infected birds are possible, but the current risk to the public remains low.

Action: While commercial poultry farmers must follow government directions for their industry, backyard flock owners and bird keepers are urged to implement a Biosecurity Code of Practice and report any unexplained bird deaths to the Victoria Emergency Hotline 1800 226 226, press 1.
Properly cooked eggs, meat, and poultry products are safe to consume in Australia. See Vic Gov website: https://agriculture.vic.gov.au/biosecurity/animal-diseases/poultry-diseases

Feral pigs are the worst predator of Cassowary eggs and young chicks. They also eat everything Cassowarys can eat. There is a pig trap available in Australia that only pigs can open, called HOGGONE: https://animalcontrol.com.au/.../hoggone-mesn-feral-pig... There needs to be a serious ongoing programme at all levels of government, especially Queensland, to have all pigs destroyed in the Cassowary's entire range, including shooting, trapping, and baiting.

Troy Holmes on radio in South Australia promoting budgie-ownership - they do make the sweetest bird pets!
Link to video in text below to watch.

Thanks to FIVEaa Adelaide's Lucy Lokan and David Penberthy for hosting BCSA President Troy Holmes this morning. The interview touches on the virtues of the humble Aussie budgie, who strikes a great balance between affordability and interaction as a companion pet in a cost-of-living crisis.

Although Troy didn't appear in his budgie smugglers, he did smuggle a budgie into the studio!

Check out the video below.

CLOSING SOON: National Finch and Softbill Census, closes Friday 15th December 2023.
Finch and Softbill keepers should add their stats to this list. The results help the NFSA and bird clubs to, for example, identify species in decline in Australian aviculture, and assist peak bodies in negotiations with governments on regulations. Participation is anonymous.

Attention: Bird keepers in Victoria

The Domestic Animal Regulations 2015, made under the Domestic Animals Act 1994, will expire on 23 November 2025. Regulations 'sunset' every 10 years, necessitating a review of current requirements to inform a new (rewritten) set of regulations.
As part of the review, Animal Welfare Victoria is asking stakeholders how current requirements may be strengthened or improved. We are seeking your views on what is working well, what may require reform, and where there are opportunities for improvement and modernisation.
The survey will be open until COB Thursday 14 December 2023.

Main topics covered by the current regulations include:
• Microchipping requirements (including licenced registries, implanters, and microchip records)
• Applicable Organisations and Dog Obedience Training Organisations
• Commercial Dogs Breeders
• Animal Sale Permits and Declared Bird Organisations
• Pet Exchange Register
• Dangerous and restricted breed dogs
• Infringements

The survey is designed for you to note where a topic is not relevant, and will skip to the next topic.
All responses to the survey are anonymous. Feedback will be used to inform policy proposals when drafting the new regulations (taking effect from 2025). Further opportunities will also be available to comment on the regulations during the review process, including consultation on a Regulatory Impact Statement.
