As some of you know, Felix was approved for a service dog last year, after four years of waiting, and on June 15th, we met Cowboy, the puppy who will become the service dog, and brought him home with us.

Our job over the next 6 months is primarily to create a bond between Cowboy and Felix and also teach him some basic puppy skills with the help of a fantastic local trainer. Then he will begin the serious work of service dog training, which will take several years.

What does an Autism service dog do for his human? One of the main purposes is to provide pressure against the human when a meltdown is imminent, to soothe and shortcircuit the meltdown. They can also be very helpful in facilitating social situations that are often hard for kids with Autism, keeping Felix safe and calm, and helping him with transitions, among other things.

For now, we're focused on having fun and some basic commands like "sit," "stay," "quiet," and other puppy things.

Finn and Watson have welcomed Cowboy - Finn more cautiously and Watson with open arms. Finn is warming up to him, day by day. The cats are completely ignoring him, as they do.

Welcome, Cowboy.

That last photo, of Watson, reminded me of this one of Finn. She's a gorgeous lass and completely in charge of Watson.
