THIS IS A FANTASTIC POST BY Good Guardianship

"Given the statements that we see so often from those using aversive or 'balanced' training methods, those of us who use a force free approach need to clear up some of the issues with what is said.

As well as the red flags so often seen of 'positive only' or 'purely positive', these statements will usually trot out the old misunderstanding that all we do is toss cheese at a dog when they do something right and ignore everything else. This is absolutely untrue and does not reflect the force free approach at all.

Successful force free training involves SO much more than that.

• It needs a deep understanding of learning theory.
• What the dog's welfare needs are and how to make sure they are met.
• The potential impact of health on behaviour.
• The emotional states that underly behaviours.
• How to manage situations so that the dogs don't carry out the undesired behaviours and perhaps get an internal reward for doing them.
• How to train other behaviours the dog can do in that situation that will be rewarded so that the undesirable behaviour is no longer the best choice for them in that situation.
• When training isn’t the right answer at all.

The factors involved in getting the force free approach and training right are far too many for me to list in this post or on this image, but these are the things that a good force free trainer or behaviour professional is doing every time they are working with a dog and their humans.

It's so much more than just lobbing food at a dog."

A biiiiig THANK YOU to all of the amazing participants of Music on Paradise this past Saturday💕🎵

It is so touching to see such a wonderful group of people come together in order to support the dogs.

Gisele, a devoted foster home, animal lover and one of the best human's that we have had the pleasure of crossing paths with puts this event on annually in memory of her first foster dog with us, Abe.

In addition to hosting and organizing this memorial event, Gisele also personally donates a days worth of food for all of the shelter dogs at The Dog-Go Project through Meals for Mutts.

The talented musicians that attended donated their talents and time for this awesome event! THANK YOU Rob Fillo Music , Matthew, Fiona, Jody, Angela, Kris! (Please shared your pages in the comments if you have a separate page for your music!) The music was uplifting, inspiring and so appreciated by all of us that had the pleasure of taking part in the evening.

The attendees, and all who brought bottles to the bottle drive that Gisele hosted! These funds will be assisting the Dog-Go Project (where Abe came from), as well as the efforts of Rosier Days Dog Rescue Society. We are currently working on a local project aiming to keep dogs in their homes and out of rescues and shelters.

Thank you all once again for your kindness and generosity!

Working with your dog on force free training can build an incredibly strong bond. The stronger the bond, the easier of a time you’ll have when you encounter challenges together!

Clicker training can be a really fun way to learn some basics cues and develop them into advanced skills. Clicker training works because your dog learns to associate one thing (the click) with another (the reward such as a treat). Eventually the clicker itself becomes a reward. The timing of the click marks the appropriate behaviour. This impeccable timing creates clear communication and therefore speedy training.

Have you tried clicker training with your dog before?

Some other bonding activities would be agility, nose work, or other dog sports!

The first long weekend of summer has arrived!!

We all want to enjoy the weather and festivities with our friends, family, and furry companions. Let’s be mindful of a few things going into the weekend:
🐶 don’t leave our friends or kids in hot cars.
🐶 keep our friends safe and as happy as possible during the fireworks.
🐶 dogs should be leashed and/or under control at all times.
🐶 have lots of water available for the hot weather and be mindful of little paws on the hot asphalt.

We hope everyone has a safe and fun long weekend! 🐶🐾

Thank you to Bosley's Admirals Walk and Bosley's Esquimalt for having us yesterday!

We had a great time seeing familiar faces and meeting new people. We had some great conversations chatting about responsible pet ownership with you and would love to keep the conversation going!

At our events we had a survey for people to complete to give us a better idea of struggles pet owners may be running into. We’d love if you’d take the time to complete this questionnaire and email your answers to [email protected]

Knowledge is power 💪🏼

Questionnaire:
1) When you acquired your dog, did you enroll in classes or private training?

2) Why did you decide that route?

3) If you did pursue a trainer or a class, what methods did they use?
A) Positive reinforcement
B) Balanced
C) Corrections based
D) I am not sure

4) If there is a behaviour that you would like to improve with your dog and what behaviour is that?

If so, in what capacity are you currently working on it?

We want to help dogs and their people succeed together! Please ask us if you would like us to recommend some trainers that we have worked with to help you with any behaviours that you may be struggling with!

Rambo update!

We want to thank any donors and supporters of Rambo!

A few weeks back as he transitioned to his new home Rambo had some pretty concerning blood in his stool. One accident was mainly blood and we were very concerned as his energy also seemed off.

Rambo had fantastic care with Dr. Russell of Grace Veterinary Hospital . We did some extensive tests as Rambo has some underlying health concerns. His bloodwork showed that something was going on, but luckily his ehrlichia was not flared up, which was one of our major concerns. His stool sample came back with no real answers as well. But luckily our man Rambo perked up and is now back to his normal self. This guy is very sensitive, so it was likely due to the stress of transitioning to a new home, as well as a diet change (our doing).

We are so thankful to all who share our love for Rambo and who supported him. We are touched that so many see how special he is!

Thank you!

The world lost a magnificent boy this past week. Wilbur was an incredible dog who helped many people and dogs alike. He was a key member in our rehabilitation team alongside his wonderful and knowledgeable mom, Jenn. These two were a dynamic duo. Jenn and Wilbur would be our first call for those dogs who were unsure meeting new friends. He always knew how to comfort the insecure dogs and engage them in his circus act playtime, being more goofy than one could think possible.
He was a gentle soul who’d give the best snuggles in times of need (many tears were shed over the years with Willie comforting the whole way), he was the first doggy friend of many foster dogs, and a great foster brother.

Our heart goes out to Jenn, Roe, and Scraps.
You will be deeply missed Wilbur. Rest in paradise sweet boy. Say hi to Bam for us 💙💚

It has been almost 2 weeks that Truman has been fostered by the wonderful Shirley of . Shirley is an exceptional, force-free dog trainer.

Truman has settled in extremely well. Better than we expected! We are learning more about him and the kind of forever home that he may best suit!

So far we have learned that Truman would be fine to live with a well-matched doggie friend, a human who doesn't rush him in the mornings and has knowledge or willingness to learn dog body language as Truman gives great communication on how he is feeling!

We are so grateful for Shirley for opening up her home, heart and for her expertise. Her commitment and dedication to Truman is going to set this guy up to succeed! 👏

Our sweet Rambo has had a rough go lately with some bloody stools . He has recently been adopted, but this started almost immediately, so we are covering his vet bills through this. We are very cautious with this guy as he has ehrlichia, which can cause some issues. Please keep Rambo in your thoughts for a speedy recovery.

Unfortunately, our bills for him are quickly racking up with health tests. Please consider donating if you can. Sharing this post can go a long way too!

Thank you 🥰 We greatly appreciate your support for Rambo.

Marty

Located in Victoria
Breed: Maltese Mix
Age: Approx. 1.5 years
Weight: 7.5 lbs
S*x: Neutered Male

Dogs: Yes- but read below

Cats: Unknown

Children: Yes, but read below. We would say he would do best without young children living in the home, but visiting children sure.

Energy Level: Low- low/Medium

Health notes: Grade 1 Heart Murmur was detected. An ultrasound was performed and the report will be provided to his adopter. It is recommended that the heart should be listened to by a vet on an annual basis and before any general anesthetics.

Adoption fee: $525

Meet Marty, a curious soul with a heart full of sweetness. His loving demeanor is infectious, and his goofy antics are sure to keep you entertained. Marty is not just all fun and games, though. He is very smart and a quick learner! He has learned basic commands like sit and lay down, and would love to work more on recall and stay with his new people .He loves playtime, but he also appreciates a good cuddle. His loyalty is unwavering, always sticking by your side, and his funny personality will bring laughter into your home. Adopting Marty means gaining a friend who will bring joy, companionship, and unconditional love into your life.

Marty came into care on January 1st. We were told that he was from a puppy mill confiscation case with 130 other dogs. Although Marty wasn't exposed to much, he has such a desire to learn and live life to the fullest! We don’t believe that he had seen a larger dog before coming to us and we are still working with him while he is trying to figure out what exactly they are! While Marty loves almost every person and small dog he meets, when he is cuddling with one of his favourite people he will growl at others that he loves. Dogs or people. He wants that moment and person to himself. He is not aggressive, he just doesn't want that interaction to be bothered and he vocalizes it. We have been working on not allowing him to practice this, but this could cause issue with others in the home, depending on their stance on it. Marty vocalizes noises heard as well. We think that Marty would best suit a home that does not share walls with others due to his sensitivity to noises and barking at them. But if you want an alert dog for your single family dwelling, he’s got it!

Marty seems to prefer to attach himself to woman as “his person” and is more comfortable with woman doing most of the handling tasks like picking him up, and brushing him.

Marty completed SmartPuppy Level 1 with SmartDog Training and consulting. He would love to participate in more reward-based training classes or seminars with his new person as his focus and willingness to learn is fantastic!

If you think Marty would be the perfect companion for you, please complete an application!

Alright our fabulous community, we need your help!!!!

Our adorable and spunky little guy Marty is back in care and looking for his forever people. But listen up! Don’t get distracted by his adorableness, we really really need people to take his quirks seriously and only apply if you are actually comfortable working with his needs.

Marty can be a vocal guy. He barks and growls at noises he hears outside (gets better as he settles, but can increase if he had a stressful day). He barks and growls at people and dogs approaching him in the house if he is sitting with his chosen person. He does not act aggressively but he is vocal about his displeasure of the intruder (even if you are a normal member of the household!!). He has also struggled initially left alone and will bark. Because of his vocal nature he is not suitable to an apartment/condo or unit with shared walls.

Marty prefers female humans over males. He has made great strides with his foster dad, and has started choosing him over favorite foster mom on occurrence but he has worked very hard over 3 months to make this progress with Marty!

Marty can be nervous of handling initially and will shy away when you attempt to grab him or put on his harness.

Now the good 👍🏼 :
1. He is adorable
2. He is playful and hilarious in his antics
3. He is super snuggly
4. He is a tiny little guy who can be easily transported
5. He is so loyal and an incredibly loving companion for his person

If you have already submitted an application for Marty and would still like to be considered after giving this a thorough read through, please send us an email and we will re-review your application and be in contact!

Applications can be found here:
