🎃Trick or treat - top tips for dogs 🎃

People dressed in costumes and unexpected knocks at the door can be confusing and scary for many dogs. Here are our Halloween top tips:

🎃 Be careful when opening the door so your dog doesn’t accidentally escape
👻 If your dog is really worried, consider a sign saying ‘nervous dog, please do not knock’. You could still leave treats out for children to help themselves
🍬 Keep human sweets and chocolate safely out of your dog’s reach
🧛 Consider if your dog will be upset if you dress them up. Costumes can feel restrictive and prevent your pet from communicating their discomfort

Seasonal Canine Illness

As we start to enjoy crunchy-leaved autumn walks, it's important to be aware of Seasonal Canine Illness (SCI) - a rare condition that can affect dogs during the autumn months.

Symptoms usually appear 1-3 days after a woodland walk. These symptoms can have many causes, but it's worth knowing that SCI is one possibility, even though it's thankfully very rare.

Some areas are known to be associated with cases and we advise looking out for signage and keeping an eye on local news. Don’t worry though - the vast majority of woodland walks are perfectly safe.

❓ What causes SCI?
The exact cause is still unknown; awareness and early treatment is key.

📞 Worried about your dog?
If your dog shows any unusual symptoms after a woodland walk, contact your vet.

Stay safe and enjoy your autumnal adventures! 🍁

did you know we now offer laparoscopic spays at our Ringwood hospital! Also known as keyhole spays, this minimally invasive procedure uses cameras and specialised equipment to perform the surgery through two small incisions, rather than one large incision.

🐾 Laparoscopic surgery allows your pet to be back up and running at normal activity levels within 48 hours of the procedure, rather than resting for 10-14 days.
🐾 Laparoscopic spays have lower complication rates than traditional spays
🐾 Laparoscopic spays are less painful than traditional spays both during and after the procedure

If you have any questions, or want to book in for a pre-operative chat with one of our team, please phone the practice on 01425 473683

🐾 4 in 5 dogs over the age of 8 are living with chronic joint pain.

Spotting arthritis isn’t always easy. Dogs are good at hiding discomfort, and signs like lameness or stiffness can be subtle - especially when more than one leg is affected.

Early detection makes a big difference. With the right treatment, we can slow the progression of arthritis and help your dog stay active and comfortable for longer. Worried about your dog’s mobility?

Book an appointment today at www.cedarvets.com or call us on 01425 473683

To help spot the signs early, we recommend the Dog Mobility App (DogMA) from the University of Liverpool - a free, easy to use, scientifically validated tool that helps you assess your dog’s mobility at home.

On Sunday 26th October, the clocks go back one hour as British Summer Time ends. While this gives us an extra hour in bed, it can disrupt our pets’ routines, especially feeding and walking schedules.

Animals thrive on consistency, so sudden changes can cause confusion or anxiety. To help ease the transition, consider gradually adjusting your pet’s routine over a few days leading up to the change. A little preparation can make a big difference in keeping your furry friends happy and settled.

Have you noticed your pet reacting to the time change before? Share your stories or tips below - we’d love to hear them! 🐶🐱

🍂 Autumn Parasite Alert! 🍂

As the seasons change, so do the risks to your pet’s health. Cooler, wetter weather can bring out parasites like harvest mites, fleas, ticks, and even lungworm in dogs.

🔸 Harvest mites – tiny orange pests that cause itching and irritation, especially around paws and ears.

🔸 Fleas – love warm homes and can wake from dormancy when the heating goes on.

🔸 Ticks – found in grassy areas, they latch onto pets and feed on blood.

🔸 Lungworm – spread by slugs and snails, this serious parasite can be fatal if untreated.

✅ Regular flea, tick & worming treatments are your best defence.

💬 If you're unsure about your pet’s protection plan, speak to your vet.

Prevention is always better than cure!

🐢Yellow-Bellied Terrapin🐢

This little guy was found in the lake at David Lloyds gym in ringwood as a stray.

Native south-eastern area of the united states are considered an invasive species and can cause a lot of damage to our native wildlife.

These guys require specialist care and you must have a license to keep them.

Luckily for us Emily, our vet who loves all things exotic, did some research and found a local rescue who happily took him into their care.

Turtle paradise boarding for the welfare of turtles within the uk has an incredible set up and does some incredible work not only rehoming various turtle species but also advocating for their welfare on a wider level.

if you would like to support their incredible work please see their go fund me link in the comments section.
