For puppies, being fearful at different times is normal, but what happens during those periods and how it is dealt with can make the difference between it being a short term issue, or a long term one.

The period between birth and 16 weeks is critical in the social and emotional development of a puppy. The puppy’s brain sustains 80% of its growth during this period and it is a very small window of opportunity to imprint as many positive experiences as possible on the growing puppy’s brain. Dog behaviorist Dr. Ray Coppinger addresses this in his book Dogs: A New Understanding of Canine Origin, Behavior, and Evolution.

After 16 weeks of age, this window of opportunity closes. The puppy’s brain continues to grow the remaining 20% until about one year of age, but it does not have the same impact on the puppy that occurs during the first 4 months of life. This is why we encourage puppy owners to take a class starting when the puppy is 8 weeks old and deal appropriately with any potential behavior issues early on. This is especially true for Australian shepherds which are by nature reserved with strangers, rather than social or attention seeking, making appropriate socialization with people even more important.
