Primary Care vs. Urgent Care vs. Emergency Care. Which one is right for your pet?

Not knowing where to bring your pet when something's wrong can be scary. We're trying to help! Many emergencies we see aren't true emergencies, but should be seen promptly. Urgent care veterinary clinics are popping up to fill that gap between a long wait for an appointment with your regular vet and a long wait at the ER.

Please note: this list is not exhaustive. If you are concerned that your pet needs to be seen despite minor symptoms, don't hesitate to bring them to an ER.

That's awesome!!!

That's awesome!!!

We are at a complete loss for words. Two days ago we asked for help, and this photo was taken about an hour ago. This is what a community does. You have all stepped up to help keep animals feeling love and safety in their homes. And this is before most of the Amazon and Chewy deliveries have come in (if you donated via Chewy or Amazon, we rarely get slips saying who donated. If you would like a receipt, please let us know. Chewy often combines multiple orders, so it can be difficult for us to track individual donors).

THANK YOU. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜

Please excuse Skipps' cute behind, he was checking to make sure we didn't accidentally put any dog food on the cat shelves by mistake.

SOS! We are in immediate need of support. This is the current state of our cat food shelves in our Pet Food Pantry. This food helps keep animals in their home where they are loved. Helping our food pantry will help keep our already high numbers of intakes over the summer manageable.

This is what we are in need of immediately:
📌 23 3-pound bags of dry cat food
📌 10 13-pound bags of dry cat food
📌 6 cases of wet dog food

We are open every single day between 10am and 4pm for donations. We truly appreciate your support in this.

Join us for our upcoming Dog Park Night at June Farms! Featuring 2 dog parks, one for smaller dogs and one for larger. Complimentary treats for your dogs, woodfired pizza and cocktails for you!

Can you help?

In the last two weeks, there has been a huge demand for dry cat food, and our shelves are very low. By making a donation of dry cat food, you are helping keep cats in homes where they are already loved and adored. Do you think you can help?

Any brand of dry cat food is welcome.

Thank you, or as cats say, Meow. ❤

🛇 Use your Manners! 🛇
The Sniff test - Stop doing that!
The sniff test - a badly engrained habit that society has been taught, without a clear understanding of what they're actually doing.

🚩When you reach out towards a dog, you are using body pressure AT them, giving them no time to assess whether you are safe & whether they require further investigation to pick up your information. You are forcing an interaction of a relationship that hasn't had time to develop. To some dogs, this is quite rude & the reason a lot of dogs snap at or bite people. This can cause alot of behavioral issues because of layered stress due to forced interactions.

🚩If they are on lead, they have no where to go if they are sensitive to spacial pressure, so can end up shutting down, shying away or snapping at your hand so you back off. This is an example of how a dog is now using pressure to turn off pressure & make you back off so they aren't so stressed.

🚩People think by offering your hand it can give the dog time to sniff to know you're friendly... they can sniff without being forced to sniff your hand.Their noses are far more superior than ours & they don't need close contact forced upon them to smell you.

🚩Some dogs might not want to know you. You have no relationship with them and that's perfectly fine. They aren't your dog so you don't need to touch them or steal pats for your own satisfaction.

🤔 If you are meeting a dog, what should you do?
⚠Ask the owner if you can interact with their dog. Not all people want strangers touching their dogs. Especially strangers who you are unlikely to see again.
⚠Stand up straight & relaxed, with your hands at your side.
⚠Ignore the dog & talk to the owner.
⚠Don't stare at the dog & don't try to force an interaction by going in for a pat. If the dog wants to know you, it will come up to you & sniff around. Usually they will move away & then come back for a second sniffathon. Some dogs will bunt your hands & wag their tails, which are good signs that you're likely an accepted new friend. Give them a few slow pats down their back (NOT THEIR HEAD) & then stop. Is the dog happy? Has it accepted your interaction? This will determine whether you can give it more pats.

🐶This is a more stress free option for dogs & a reason why in consultations we can develop a good level of trust, especially with fearful dogs & aggressive dogs, without a bunch of negative side effects from forced interactions.

If you are able to help, there are some things we could really use right now. Our Pet Food Pantry has been in high demand. We're in need of 5-8 lb. bags of dry cat and dog food. And for our shelter pets, donations of peanut butter and dog treats, such as Carry Outs, Pupperoni, Zuke's and dehydrated liver will be most appreciated. (The pups aren't so keen on the Milkbones.) Some items can be found on our Amazon Wishlists. Items can be dropped off at our door. Thank you. https://mohawkhumane.org/wishlist
