Waitemata Dressage Championships

🕺Elvis (Kiwi Catapult) and I headed to Woodhillsands this weekend to have a dance around.

He handled the atmosphere of a championship show perfectly and wasn’t fazed at all, a little bit to relaxed 😴 in our first test on the Saturday and I just couldnt find the go button 🐌. With a bit more of a wake up and taking the sound proof ears off he went on to do a fabulous test to take the win in the silver preliminary 1C 🥇 ❤️
Sundays test he was a tad on the tired side and our weakness on the left rein unfortunately lost us some marks.

Elvis is only a few weeks in from returning to work after his wind operation and new the champs show would be a bit of a push but I was keen to still take him out for the exposure. We have a bit to work on and he still has a heap of strengthening to do and once we get this I am sure he will really excel 🥰

The interesting facts about selenium

Reports of selenium’s toxicity and deleterious effects on horseback date back to the 1295.

By 1860, selenium had been identified as a “toxic principle causing lameness and death”.

That was just 16 short years before Custer and 225 cavalry horses, and roughly 150 mules rode out from Fort Lincoln in Bismarck for the last time. When Custer reached South Dakota and the northern border of Nebraska, there were reports of horses with hair loss, skin lesions and hoof inflammation.

Did selenium lead to Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer’s last stand?
In a book written in 2007 about (severe hoof diseases) it referenced a report written in 1944 that Custer’s horses had been wintered on fields known for heavy growth of highly selenium-rich plants and soil.

Today Selenium is also known as a nutritional trace element.

This is a must have mineral for horses. However, it is really important to know if your horse needs supplementation of it or not. Some soils in NZ have plenty and so it is available to the horse from grazing that pasture. It is a good idea to get the soil tested.

The strange fact about Selenium is that the symptoms of a horse being too low or a horse being too high are very similar. Such as becoming highly strung, difficult to manage their behaviour. poor performance, changes in character. So, the only way to know for sure is a blood test.

It is so inappropriate to just add selenium to the diet on a just in case basis as overfeeding it will be toxic. Severe toxicity starts with the tail falling out and hoof deformity.

So if the blood test shows an ideal level then the addition of an inorganic form, Sodium selenite in a premix feed or mineral mix, will be suitable to maintain the level. If a horse is low, then supplementation is needed daily, and the safest form (unlikely to create a toxic result) is the organic form in a powder. The liquid form requires very careful measurement and a very small amount usually once a fortnight. This form is easy to forget or overdose with toxic consequences.

It is important to look at all the feedstuffs that you give the horse, read the labels and add up the total daily quantity to make sure the levels are correct. The optimum daily level is 1.66 mg per day.

When in doubt ask your veterinarian for a blood test.

All horses in New Zealand need to be given minerals whether as a supplement or in a premix feed. How much depends on how hard they are required to work.
Performance horses, need higher levels of minerals, whether it be eventing, racing, jumping, dressage, endurance, western, even pregnant or lactating brood mares.
For example, an average size horse needs 20gms of Calcium per day as a basic level – but a performance horse needs 40 gm each day. Mares in foal or lactating, need twice the daily amount of Vitamin E as well as the extra minerals.
Macro minerals like Calcium, Phosphorous, Magnesium, Potassium need twice the standard daily dose.
Micro mineral, for example copper, zinc selenium only need to be need 25 % more.
To know how much read …… what supplements does your horse really need each day Then check out the labels of the feeds and supplements in your horse’s daily diet and add them all up. Be sure to adjust the ratio amount in the premix if you are not giving your horse the full amount recommended on the label e.g. if it suggests 4 Kg a day and you feed 2 Kg then halve the quantities of minerals listed.
