Based on Herndon's personality, I would have to say he used to be someone's pet. After that, who knows what happened. 🤷♀️ Did he slip out one night and get lost? Was he left behind by someone who moved and couldn't take him? Did his person pass away? Was he a stray cat that someone started feeding and when they left they didn't take him because he was "just a stray"?
We will never know his past or how long he was outside and alone. How many times was he cold and shivering at night? 🥶 How many days did he go without something to eat. 🙀 How many fights and injuries did he have to endure? 🤕
All we know, is when a Good Samaritan brought him into the Clinic, his leg was so badly infected, it had to be amputated. His ears were dirty and one infected. This ear has turned chronic. Estimated to be around 9 years old, he was never neutered. And through the Good Samaritan, we have learned that Herndon was a recent daddy before she took him in (she kept one of his kittens 😻).
We only have guesses and what if's about Herndon's past, but we know his future. He will never be on his own again. He will be warm and his belly will always be full.
Not every cat can end up quite as lucky as Herndon. There are not enough indoor homes to house all the cats that so desperately need them. So what do we do?
😺 We can spay and neuter, meaning Trap-Neuter-Return for cats that are not handleable.
😸 We can encourage our friends and family to spay and neuter.
😻 If you must rehome a cat/kitten for any reason, you can have it spayed or neutered first to be sure it will get done.
😽 Shelters, rescues and sanctuaries can only do so much. We, the collective cat-loving community, can help by making sure every cat we can possibly fix, gets fixed. This includes friendly, feral, male, female, indoor, outdoor, kitten, senior.
😺 EVERY. SINGLE. CAT. can benefit from being spayed or neutered.
Let's spay or neuter all that are out there, so that others don't have to suffer like sweet Herndon did. 🖤
