Hey Posse! We just learned about a new game app that helps earn food and supplies for animal rescues (from Chewy.com), in addition to giving actual rescue dogs more exposure to potential adopters. It's called Treat and you can download it for iPhone and Android.

For our rescue partners, there is a way for you to get signed up and post your dogs that people playing the game can choose as their virtual mascot (via PetFinder). The more people play, the more supplies you can receive for your shelter.

The website states they currently have a limited amount of space for rescues to sign up, but they are working on expanding their availability. If you can't sign up now, check back later to help your dogs!

We can't wait to start playing!

Congratulations to Kim Kapalka who won our "guess the bean count" contest yesterday at Pup Days of Summer - Fest.

We put out a jar with black and white beans in it to visually demonstrate the proportion of black dogs that get adopted in the United States versus the number of lighter-colored dogs.

According to a study by Los Angeles Animal Services, only 28 percent of all dogs adopted are black. This is known as Black Dog Syndrome (hence our Dark Dog Posse name), where black dogs are passed over for adoption more often than lighter-colored dogs.

Some reasons for this phenomenon include:
- People equate black with evil or bad things
- Black dogs are hard to see in dark cages at shelters
- Black dogs don’t photograph well for online listings

True or not, we want to shine a light on all animals available for adoption. Thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth!

Laurel is still looking for a family to call her own.
Meet Laurel-she is a spayed husky mix. Born 10-24-23 Good with other dogs. How can you resist those ears?
Here is what her foster mom has to say about her
Laurel is ready to charm her way into your heart and home. She is a social butterfly who loves nothing more than playing with other dogs and people. Laurel is smart and treat-motivated. We are working on redirecting and controlling those puppy behaviors which is hard when there is so much fun to be had. At the end of each day, Laurel loves belly rubs and snuggles.

Meet Nanala! This little cutie was born 3/18/24 and is an interesting mix of beagle, poodle and spaniel! She is a little more petite than her siblings but a sweetest can be! She is working on potty training and absolutely loves her foster siblings. She would thrive in a home with other animals and plenty of exercise. Due to the mix of breeds, we are not sure how big she will get, but assume she will be a medium sized dog.

Meet Liberty, an adorable boxer mix who is estimated to be around 13 weeks. Liberty and her siblings had a sad start to life when they were dumped on our vets doorstep on the Fourth of July. While dumping an animal is never OK, we are thankful that they all ended up in the right hands. The sweet girl is fairly timid at first and will latch onto her person immediately and follow them everywhere. She gets along with dogs, cats and kids and is a very gentle girl. Liberty is working on potty training and currently sleeps thru the night. If you're interested in adopting this sweet pup please fill out an app.

If you're going to have your dog around water, here's some good advice, especially if you have a breed that is not good at swimming. You might want to invest in a doggie lifejacket.

***Awareness Post***

We've had two requests to search for dogs recently. Sadly they've drowned and at this time of year they have resurfaced before we could get there, leaving their owners with a traumatic task of recovering them.

There are a number of breeds that CANT SWIM or are POOR SWIMMERS. They can sink very quickly and with best efforts to save them it is often not possible.

You rarely get a second chance with water.

Your dog may never have shown an interest in water, or may just paddle. But dogs are instinct reactive and it only takes one accident.

Please don't take the risk. Please keep breeds that are known to be poor swimmers on a lead near water. At least then you have a chance of saving them.

Some of the breeds most known that can't swim/poor swimmers and most at risk are...

• English Bulldogs
• Pocket Bully's
• Pugs
• Dachshunds
• Boxers
• Shih Tzu's
• Basset Hounds
• Corgi's
• Maltese
