Sudden onset blindness and dilated pupils. This is ivermectin toxicity due to eating a little bit of horse wormer that the horse spat out. She is staying overnight for IV fluids and a detox.

Unfortunately, many people don't know what a lean dog is supposed to look like. Owners of healthy, lean dogs are always being told their dogs are "too skinny" when in fact they are not. We are just used to seeing overweight dogs and think that's normal.

Here's one of our favorite visual comparisons from malnourished (too thin) to obese. The middle two pics are healthy lean dogs. From the side, you should see a nice tuck behind their ribs and a noticeable hourglass waist when looking down on their back. And for some short coat dogs, yes seeing one or two ribs is OK!

Keeping your dogs at the low end of their healthy weight range will not only help their joints and prevent disease, studies have shown that dogs which are kept at a lean weight, live two years longer than overweight dogs!

📷 Thanks Midwest Canines for this great visual. ♥️

Top tips to help cool down your horse after exercise! 🐎💦

1) The most effective way to cool down a horse is to continuously pour cold water all over their body.
2) Don’t waste time scraping - leaving water on a horse will not make them hotter. Instead, any water sitting on the coat will evaporate and contribute to cooling them.
3) Don’t be afraid to offer your horse water immediately after exercise. It does not increase the risk of colic.

ONIONS, LEEKS AND GARLIC (INCLUDING SAGE AND ONION STUFFING, ONION GRAVY)

Onions, garlic, leeks, shallots and chives all belong to the same group of plants. They can cause toxicity even when cooked. Initially there can be gastrointestinal signs with vomiting and diarrhoea but the main effect is damage to red blood cells resulting in anaemia. This may not be apparent until several days after ingestion.

If you are worried that you pet has ingested any of the above you can call our Animal PoisonLine 24/7 on 01202 50 90 00.

Vets requiring treatment advice for animals with suspected poisoning can call our Veterinary Professionals line on 02073 055 055.

☀️ Morning ☀️

As it’s going to reach 36 degrees today I have made the decision to cancel/rearrange all large breeds. It’s just far too hot for them to be in the salon with dryers etc, especially after travelling in the heat to get to the salons.

I know I keep saying it but please don’t walk your dogs in this heat, just one walk could have fatal consequences for your dog.

☀️ Take care, keep cool ☀️

Did you know the law changed last year in regards to transporting your dog in the car?

Your dog now must be restrained by a seatbelt or in the boot with a guard so in the case of an accident your pet is contained. Failure to comply invalidates your insurance and can lead to a £2500 fine!

As you may already be aware there is an outbreak of Equine Influenza in the UK, this has led to all horse racing being abandoned today.

If you are rambling, dog walking or cycling and pass any fields with horses in, please do not approach or fuss them. This strain of the virus is, foreign and is described as 'rogue', it is highly contagious and is airborne. It can live on people's clothing and possibly dogs, for days.

Please help us to contain the outbreak by staying away.🐴

Please share or copy and paste x

Thank you for your understanding!

Looking for someone else: does anyone know of any reputable breeders that breed either Border Collies, German Shepards or Labradors? That either have any puppies for sale or litters due soon? Thanks very much!

** WARNING for all dog & cat owners & Dogs and cats carers. Read on.... **

With the snow and ice expected the roads may well be gritted, if you walk your dog on gritted roads/paths please make sure that their paws are washed either by walking them through a few puddles away from the gritted surfaces or by dipping their feet in fresh water once at home. Every year hundreds of pets throughout the country become seriously ill and in some cases die because of the rock salt and antifreeze being used during the cold snap. Dogs and cats walk through the substances left by gritters trying to clear roads and car drivers defrosting their windscreens and then licking them off their paws. Consuming rock salt can cause dehydration, liver failure and pancreatitis, while antifreeze contains the chemical ethylene glycol, which can be lethal when ingested.
