Dog Logic - For Happy Dog and Owners I am an expert in dog behaviour and training. I offer behaviour consults and 1:1 training. I work using reward-based training and positive reinforcement.
(8)

I cover all areas of challenging behaviours - separation issues, lunging and barking on the lead, recall, resource guarding I am a qualified CAPBT affiliate having completed Year 2 of the COAPE Diploma in Companion Animal Behaviour and Training. You can find out more about what this means to you by going to the following websites: www.capbt.org and www.coape.org

There are 3 areas I work in:
◾P

uppy training and socialisation
◾One to one training
◾One to one behaviour consultations

We love our dogs, they have been by our side for a great many years but now, more than ever, we want them as loyal companions, not asking them to do a job other than to be part of the family. This is a tough ask for many breeds and we need to prepare them for what we want them to do. With my puppy training, I aim to equip puppies with the life skills they will need to be part of the family home and educate owners in how to teach their puppy how to do this so they can be the best dog they can be as an adult. However, some dogs struggle with this and some owners struggle with this later on down the line. I am not here to judge but to help create a balance where you can enjoy each other and, as an owner, you can better understand your beloved pet and what he or she needs from you to be happy too! There are times when some additional one to one support is required to help with those everyday behaviours that are so necessary - walking calmly on a lead, having a good recall, not jumping, to name but a few - and I can help you achieve this so you can relax and enjoy your dog without that worry in the back of your mind. Finally, there are some who are in the position where there are more serious behaviours being displayed that require a more detailed look at the dog's overall emotional state to help us work out the best treatment plan for your pet. We are all individuals so I approach each request for support with an open mind, focussed on you, your dog and your situation. We want your puppy/dog to want to perform new behaviours. By rewarding the behaviours we want and ignoring unwanted behaviours, they will continue to perform the new behaviours because there is something positive in it for them - a reward. The key to success is consistent, clear communication. For more information on each area, please refer to the appropriate page on my website. Ainsley Miller, DipCABT (QCF - Level 5)

🏆 Can you believe it's been 25 years since the APDT was first started? Isn't that amazing?

Last year we were due to celebrate this momentous occasion but sadly a certain pandemic meant all celebrations had to be delayed. Boo 👎🏾

We are the longest running positive reinforcement based dog training membership organisation in the UK, and we're also a nonprofit - there to provide support to our members and to spread our message of Kind, Fair and Effective training.

After this terrible year, we're all about finding the positives, and so we thought we'd have a 'belated' celebration. 😎 👏🏽

Over the coming weeks, we'll be filling you in with...

⭐️ The History of the APDT - where it all began, and with who, as well as why it was important then and it's still so relavant now.
⭐️ A spotlight on some of our fabulous trainers and the work they do.
⭐️ How YOU can become a dog trainer - where do you start as an enthusiastic dog owner with a passion for training, or someone who's looking to change careers and move into the world of dog training.
⭐️ Why R+ (Positive Reinforcement) works THE BEST for all dogs (and all species, truth be told).
⭐️ Why belonging to the APDT matters so much as professional pet dog trainers.

Tell us how you use Kind, Fair, Effective methods when training your dogs in the comments below. 🥰

Or, maybe you're dreaming of becoming a dog trainer and want some support? Let us know, drop us a comment or send us a message and we'll do all we can to help you.

I have been completing questions about Rafa since I got him. Just got an email saying this....

The Generation Pup team are delighted to be awarding Rafa a 'Certificate of Contribution to Animal Welfare Science'
This certificate acknowledges that data for Rafa, together with data from other Generation Pup participants, has contributed to the following piece of research:

'Neutering decisions of owners of 12-month old dogs in the Generation Pup cohort study', which was presented at the International Society for Anthrozoology Conference, 4 September, 2020.*

It's great to be able to part of this. I will continue to contribute and would encourage everyone getting a puppy to sign up and contribute!!!

Arousal in Spanish Water Dogs... more than just a 'Herding Trait'?

I wrote this for the Spanish Water Dog page but it applies to all dogs.

https://www.spanishwaterdogclub.co.uk/post/arousal-more-than-just-a-herding-trait

AROUSAL – WHAT IS IT? WHAT EFFECT DOES IT HAVE ON OUR DOGS? Arousal is anything that pushes your dog up, triggers adrenaline in the system, fills their bucket. So, it could be excitement, pain, anxiety, fear, itchiness, gastrointestinal upsets, emotional conflict or a combination of all of these. ...

The School of Canine Science

For such a well known scientific based writer, the recent article by Stanley Coren is a huge worry for me as a behaviourist.

This video talks you through why he is wrong with giving this advice. Not only is he wrong but the advice can result in a dog biting their owner if it is followed.

Please DO NOT follow the advice given in this article!

This is a breakdown of Stanley Coren’s latest article in Psychology Today, “A quick fix for a barking dog” is out-dated and dangerous.

If you’ve not read it and you want to - you can find it here: https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.psychologytoday.com/intl/blog/canine-corner/202008/quick-fix-barking-dog%3famp

Heatstroke in Dogs UPDATED – PET CPD – Emotions R Us

This is a really interesting read.

It goes without saying that you don't leave your dog in a hot car but what is worrying about this data is that dogs dying from heatstroke as a result of being left in a hot car is a small percentage. Walks and exercise in hot weather is a greater cause 😮

The Startling Science of Fear and Love – PET CPD – Emotions R Us

Robert explains this very clearly.

If you are still in doubt then think about music and how it emotional affects you 😊

For many years now – like many other people working in the pet behaviour industry – I’ve been challenging this popular behaviourist dogma, and reassuring worried owners that, on the contrary, it’s really important that you do cuddle and love your dog when they are frightened and upset.

Rafa pulling in a boat

I love facilitating dogs doing what they were bred to do.

Owning Spanish Water Dogs, I really wanted to ensure that they have the chance to achieve this in water as well as on land.

Yesterday I went to Swim 4 Paws where all 3 of mine had fun in the water. These videos (the 2nd is a continuation of the 1st) show Rafa fulfilling his natural instinct and ability. Other than encouragement and some directional help to go round the corner, he did this himself!!! VERY proud of him.

Do you need help with your dog fulfilling their natural ability? If so, I'd love to hear from you.

For clients that are not sure about using on line video technology for behaviour training, I wanted to share this from a client. Don't hesitate to contact me if you have been waiting - I can make it work for you successfully 🙂

🐾🐾🐾

Bowser is a nervous seven year old Lurcher/Belgian Shepherd. He has, over time, become increasingly difficult to walk. He used to be nervous of runners suddenly appearing in front of him or from behind. This then included cyclists. Eventually it developed to include everything - walkers, dogs, cyclists, cars, lorries, buses, etc. It got to the stage where I dreaded walking him! He would jump up and down whilst twisting and turning, sometimes actually pulling me off my feet!

His reactions seem to have become gradually worse following his diagnosis of idiopathic epilepsy about 4 years ago. He was even worse in wet weather as the increased noise from the traffic upset him even more.

I didn't know what to do and have had to end many walks sooner than intended.

I asked the vet for advice. I am so lucky that he referred me to Ainsley who has been an absolute godsend. By the time I contacted her we had just started lockdown due to Covid 19.

Because of lockdown we have started training via regular zoom sessions in which Ainsley could identify the issues affecting Bowser's behaviour. She is so knowledgeable and picked up on many things that I would never have thought of.

She started by looking at his diet and nutritional intake. The changes that she suggested had a huge affect in a short time. She suggested many techniques to handle Bowser. All the strategies used were introduced at a workable pace and she was able to see the affects of the practice on zoom. If I wasn't doing things correctly she would gently coax me in a positive way into doing things differently.

Ainsley also introduced methods to deal with his extreme noise sensitivity

In short, Ainsley' s advice and support has had a profound effect on Bowser's behaviour. After just 7 weeks I now have the confidence to take Bowser for stress-free walks.

The remote training works extremely well - Bowser is a different dog and I can't thank Ainsley enough for helping me understand my boy better!

🐾🐾🐾

I can help you now, you don't need to wait!!! 😀

Canine collars: an investigation of collar type and the forces applied to a simulated neck model

Many of you know I am not a fan of walking a dog on just a collar. I love a good harness.

There is, just released, a research paper that tested a number of different collars and the different ways force is applied when dogs are walked on just a collar. This covered constant pulling, to a single jerk.

The key points I want to draw your attention to are:

all collar types tested have the potential to cause injury

the lowest value pressure recorded causes tissue damage and tissue death in a human!

depending on where the collar sits when pressure is applied could affect the larynx and/or the thyroid gland (a key gland that controls metabolism)

the pressure applied affects blood vessels and can compress nerves compromising whatever structure in the body they are supplying

If your dog always walks on a loose lead, never pulls for a sniff or a squirrel, great!!!

We all want, but I would say need, loose lead walking, but with my own dogs I know they can pull for a sniff, Wispa definitely pulls when she sees a cat!!! So my dogs are always walked in a harness - either a TTouch harness or a Perfect Fit. This paper simply reinforces my decisions but also my encouragement to you to invest in a good harness. 😃

Background Dog collars have the potential to cause harm when the dog pulls on the lead. This study aimed to determine the effects of collar type and force applied using the lead, on the pressure on a simulated neck model. Lunchtime... instead of a long, or small walk today, we are enjoying lunch in a kong.

They have different ones for reasons.

Opie and Rafa have ones that the food is accessible on both sides. They are not good with a more classic kong and this helps them to keep going.

Wispa loves a classic Kong as she likes to hold something in between her paws.

Beri will try to eat the item if she can't get the food fast enough. A classic Kong is too easy for her so I use the flower as it is tough enough to withstand her chewing attempts, but harder to get everything out of!!!

Happy dogs 😍

The theme of lockdown in my house has been quiet in the garden.

DMTing, in and thank you have been the focus.

Here is how Beri and Rafa have developed it.... it is long but at least you the the music!!!

PS I reward them any time they come in. I will start to fade this now they love coming in!!!!

20/04/2020

Feeling super proud of Beri today. We were in a secure field with horses in the next field.

Before lockdown Beri couldn't have done this. But with training at home on calmness in the garden DMTing everything, and doing the absolute absoluteDogs Sexier than a Squirrel programme she didn't react to them at all for an hour!!! HUGE!!! 👏👏👏

The Training Academy GRAND Re-Opening

Dear Dog Logic peeps

I hope you are all keeping safe and well. 😊

Thank you for following me on this page, asking questions and letting me know that I am helping you. 👍

I have been fortunate to be able to continue to support clients and take on new clients using video training which I am SO pleased with. Incredible as this may sound, for many struggles, this is a perfect time to work on them.

Some of you have been enjoying the absoluteDogs Sexier than a Squirrel programme. I have too! After completing my Pro Dog Trainer assessment, I found the games so useful for clients that I continued on to their Pro Dog Trainer Geek programme. Moving to Petersfield got in the way so I haven't completed it yet but I'm on the last week, so nearly. BUT I have been using games and concept training for a while now, as some of you know!!!

WHY have games made a difference? Well, they take the pressure off! It makes training fun, enjoyable and not really training! I smile whilst I am doing it for myself with my dogs and when I'm with clients. Even the names of the games make me smile - they are memorable!

So there is a great opportunity for those of you that are interested, and if you're not then there is NO pressure. I will continue with the things I have been doing on here but absoluteDogs have a great training resource called Training Academy. It is not open all year round but for the next 2 weeks they are opening the doors and have given me the opportunity to share a link with you. What I am also able to do is create a Facebook Group for those of you that join so I can coach you and help with training the games and how to use them in everyday life.

Here is the link:

https://gamechanger.absolute-dogs.com/ta?prod=training-academy&ref=137

Once you are signed up I will add you to the group. If you are already a TA member and want to be the group - you are VERY welcome!!! The more the merrier!!! 😀

Go and see what you get access to, any questions ask and if I don't know the answer I will find out!!!

In the meantime, stay home and stay safe

Ok lovely peeps. So you have been working on IN and THANK YOU. Here is the 3rd piece of the puzzle... DMT.

Some of you know this already, but for those that don't DMT stands for....

There's a Distraction (which could be a noise, something they see)
You Mark the Distraction, I use Niiice
You give them a Treat

A couple of pointers...
🐾 don't wait for them to react to start with, get your Niice on it and go to them with the treat
🐾 go and sit in the garden with a cup of tea, some of their food or treats and spend your tea drinking time DMTing everything, a noise, the wind, a fly, a stare at something just everything and anything
🐾 then go in and give yourself and them a break
🐾 do this in the house and in the garden

Next stage is that when you say Niice they come to you for the treat.

Final stage is they hear/see the distraction and look to you, you Mark that (Niice) and they come to you for the treat.

The result of this, with In and Thank You is my little Beri Bear finally being able to relax and just enjoy being in the garden 😍😍😍

Hi all. I hope you are keeping safe.

I thought I would share a little game I am playing with my dogs. It is promoting calmness and an ability for dogs to stay settled even if I move with no cue - a self settle. With us all at home all the time, many dogs will be struggliing to sleep as they are used to us not being there. This will help them get used to movement but not needing to react to it.

For me it is the Jigsaw challenge, but it could be the reading challenge, sewing challenge, knitting challenge - whatever you are doing to help pass the time. I am standing up and moving round the table. If the dogs move, I stay stood up until they settle back down, then I sit down. Stand up, if no movement sit down, if anyone moves, stay stood up until they self settle. No talking to them. I do talk to Beri at the end of this video as she comes to me for a fuss but I quickly stop fussing her and let her go off to self settle again.

Stay safe everyone

Our Story

I love helping owners and their dogs.

All my training is about helping you understand your dog, why he/she does what he/she does and then we work on how to teach them to want to do something else that you are more happy with. I do that in a kind, positive way, using reward-based training techniques.

Jumping, pulling on a lead, biting, barking and lunging at dogs and or people, struggling with recall, tail chasing, shadow chasing, separation anxiety - I can help you will all these.

I am passionate about qualifications in this industry. I have the qualifications, knowledge and experience to help you. I have studied to the highest level with COAPE (www.coape.org) and am a Level 6 qualified behaviourist and trainer.
