Well.... how is everyone doing now we seem to be approaching the end of that awful winter!? This evening I popped a few willow whips/branches into the ground along the open fence line, willow just loves water and so if it helps.... even a tiny bit that can only be a good thing. Now is the time to plant it, after leaf fall but before leaf bud.
Did you know Willow bark is one of the oldest medicines on earth. For horses, it is a natural alternative to painkillers and anti-rheumatic drugs. Horses tolerate willow bark quite well and it can be used to support the musculoskeletal system in horses with painful diseases. They will seek it out themselves if at all possible. Fingers crossed these take... they are the easiest thing to propagate, chop off and stick it straight into the moist earth and let's be honest... nowhere is dry right now is it ;)

Hey! Happy New year! Long time no update so thought I'd share a pic of my "sacrifice" paddock, the boys still get 24/7 access to the track all year round so they can trash it if you like..... kills off the grass so its much less of a problem come spring. The mud is deep though,.... everyone is feeling it this winter I think. Spring is only a matter of weeks away folks.... hang in there. 😁

Super lovely bristly oxtongue I found in the goat enclosure! Not yet eaten by the goats, who have to be the most fussy pair in the world.
Does anyone know one of its main benefits? And do any of your horses enjoy this prickly feast?

Milk thistle seeds growing on lovely :) looking to plant up along the fence line so that they get chance to grow before being devoured 😋

Did you know Milk Thistle Seeds are rich in antioxidants and can be used to promote a healthy liver function. Milk thistle will help to support the body’s natural regeneration of new liver cell growth and, as a result, give nutritional support for healthy hooves, healthy skin and the whole immune system.

Comfrey planted today 🍃

Comfrey Leaf has earned the name 'Knitbone', traditionally used on bone, cartilage and connective tissue. It is a source of vitamin B12 and allantoin and is reputed to help with new cell growth and cell production. Seek veterinary advice before feeding to pregnant mares.
Comfrey is an amazingly powerful healer, especially for the lungs but also for ruptures, tears and bone, having the nick name knit-bone. It is also helpful in the treatment of pulmonary haemorrhage and stomach ulcers.
So many of our "medicines" for coughs do nothing but suppress it.... comfrey will encourage a cough therefore bringing up mucas..

Still talking berries!! Check out the abundance of these this year! Wonderful hawthorn berries 🍒

Hawthorn berries are a good digestive aid. Horses will readily seek out and eat this hedgerow plant if available in the field. Nutritionally supports increased stamina, normal circulation, horses prone to laminitis, navicular syndrome, rheumatism, tying up and slow digestion.

Hawthorn berries are used extensively as a cardiac tonic and for increasing circulation which is very important for horses with arthritis or navicular. The leaves and flowers are used for the same purpose, and it was known in the Middle Ages as a symbol of hope and taken for many ailments.

Do your horses seek these out?

Little wonder plant found on the track today.

Chickw**d (Stellaria media)
This one even has “w**d” in its name, but don't be fooled—it's good for your horse. Containing vitamins C, D, B6, B12, beta-carotene, magnesium, potassium, calcium, iron, zinc, and phosphorus, chickw**d is definitely a healthy w**d!

Not all w**ds are bad!!

Another tyre planted up this evening. In there we have rosemary, thyme and oregano!

Rosemary has tonic and carminative actions. It has been used both as a blood cleanser and to support circulation. It is helpful in calming and toning the digestive system, especially if this is stress related or caused through nervous tension. Rosemary also supports liver function.

Thyme has a wide variety of herbal uses but most often used to relieve the respiratory system. In addition to respiration Thyme is also used as a calmer and a condition pick me up for old, tired or show horses. For animal use only, do not give to mares in foal.

Oregano is a fantastic raw material for naturally maintaining your horse's intestinal health and supporting efficient digestion all year round, and has natural anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.

😊

Got a bit late to plant up this evening so only managed the spearmint and lemon balm.

Spearmint is a popular herb for horses, dogs and other animals thanks to its soothing properties and rich inviting smell and it is widely used to help support healthy digestion and for encouraging horses that tend to be 'fussy eaters' to eat up.

Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) has many natural benefits for horses and ponies, deriving from the mint family, it's an aromatic plant substance that promotes the production of saliva, gastric juices and bile, and stimulates the appetite.
