Here's an interesting perspective on urban living. Are you the type to cozy up in your inner zones or are you all about exploring the outer "wild"?

When we think about applying permaculture to the city, we need to adjust the concept of zones and sectors to fit the scale, and realities of vibrant urban living.

Know your beekeeper!

Fifteen years ago, Hackenberg Apiaries, with hives in Pennsylvania and Florida, produced 300 barrels of honey a year. According to Davey Hackenberg, that number dipped to 80 barrels two years ago and

The City of Wichita has a parking lot ordinance that requires a certain percentage of new parking lots to be put to planting islands with rules about hedges and trees and general green space. It's one of the nicest things about Wichita though I'm sure the developers grumble about it a lot. Given that they already have to landscape the property, why not encourage native plants and even perennial edibles like berries and herbs to support the bees and the neighborhood.

The edge of a Boulder parking lot has been transformed into a haven for bees native to Colorado. More than 20 native plants have replaced shrubs and line two sides of the parking lot next to the intersection of Canyon Boulevard and 14th Street, near the Boulder County Farmers Market.

We're talking about no-till farming and sustainable agriculture. Better for the soil, less erosion, healthier crops. Even the home garden can both contribute and benefit!

Narrated by Larry Kopald of Carbon Underground, The Soil Story reveals how soil can reverse climate change.

Bees increase their numbers by establishing new hives. You don't want them taking up residence in the eaves above your door but otherwise, they're not much of a bother. Usually, they'll find a place to go and move on within a few hours. If you're worried, we have the ability to collect some types of swarms and can contact someone for more difficult circumstances.

If you're planning to do Spring pruning, keep an eye out for hummingbird nests. Or, just keep an eye out to see if you find one. Ruby throated hummingbirds should arrive in Wichita in mid- to late- April. Put your feeders out a week or two early in case an early bird happens by.

The government wants everyone to check their gardens for these tiny eggs before they prune - here's why.
