On Mondays, I drag myself and my furry working girl out of bed and we head over to Walnut Creek Elementary, where we listen to books read by the English as a second language kids who are working on their reading skills. Buttercup loves her kids and even though she takes a firm stance on the “no kids running in the library” rule that she made up, she gives them kisses after and wants her pets.

This might not seem like a big deal to people with “normal” dogs, but Hops got into the car as soon as I opened the door today. Want to know what he usually does? He rolls on his back when he sees the car and then tries to bite me if I pick him up because everything is scary. I think that our hard work of going in super rewarding adventures is paying off! (And the Prozac 😂)

Regardless of how nervous and scared baby Hoppies is, I wouldn’t change anything about him. He’s taught me so much about dogs and training, and how to be a better and more patient person. Y’all can keep your normal dogs and I’ll take the hot messes 🩷

I got Hops a winter onesie since he’s a delicate flower of a boy and it was too big. He isn’t impressed and it’s going back. A new set of winter onesies are arriving tomorrow in two different sizes and I hope one of them works so he doesn’t freeze his little buns off 🥶

It seems wild to me that Ruthie has been gone for 4 years. Her legacy lives on and I think about her every day, especially when Pixie yells for dinner, because they have similar appetites and love eating. Ruthie was the dog that made me fall in love with senior dogs. She was found in Abilene as a stray, in terrible shape. She was a hospice adoption and was only expected to live 6 months but anyone who met her can attest that she was full of life and her rage kept her going…she just refused to die. She had scarred lungs from chronic bronchitis, no teeth but refused to let her tongue hang out because she was a proper southern lady, she went into heart failure and backed herself out of it, and didn’t let her lack of teeth keep her from enjoying all life had to offer, especially chews. She loved a good turkey wing 😂. Her life wasn’t good before we got her, but we spent the next 3 years making every day her best day, and she lived like a queen in her retirement years. She was weird, quirky, angry, and expensive, but I wouldn’t change a thing and I wish she was still here. We love you, Roofer 🩷

Holiday break is over and Buttercup is back to work! Her first therapy dog visit of 2025 was at , her usual spot on the first and third Saturday of every month and one of her favorites! She loves going to see the kids, the great rug (perfect for splooting) and getting treats.

Despite being her favorite place, and being a trained therapy dog, I still have to advocate for her because while SHE is trained, a) she is still a dog and b) humans usually aren’t, and we had that experience today. A grown man came in and used pretty threatening body language (he wasn’t threatening her but it was a weird move on his part): he kind of crouched over her and had his arms out wide like an eagle? It was weirdly aggressive and she was terrified, but I was able to lure her back in and get her back on track with a treat. I don’t really understand why he did it but I’m always stunned by how many people don’t respect a dog’s space or just don’t think before approaching one. Like, imagine being 9ish pounds, a few inches off the ground, and this random man, easily 20 times your size, just closes in on you? Why? Either way, it was a good reminder for me to always be watching and still a good experience for Buttercup because she was able to disengage from the weird situation quickly. Things like this are why she likes the kids better than adults 😂 but she still loves her job and was getting belly rubs for the last 20 min or so!

We have no idea what day it is but we’re doing nature stuff! Buttercup and Hops LOVE going on hikes and walks and they have pretty significant prey drive so they get all hopped up smelling squirrels then pass out after. I’m pretty sure there was once a little critter on this felled tree because BC just hopped up on it.

Dog mom note…BC has two collars on: a .dogs collar and a .pet collar! We’re trying out the Maven collar because it monitors respiratory rates and she has degenerative valve disease plus a heart murmur. Neither collar is an e collar! We don’t do that over here 🩷

My dogs eat a very healthy diet but they love and I love that they have no rawhide. Don’t get me wrong, they’re an indulgence for the dogs, but we all should get an indulgence here and there and they love them!

When we were in Michigan, my main priority was getting my basic 🍑 to an apple orchard because I love a cider donut (and apples) so we made a trip to , who recently acquired so it tickled me to be offered Austin East Ciders. I didn’t get any, opting for the caramel apple hard cider (this was pre-gallbladder removal), which was so good! Very sweet, but I’m the human equivalent of a chonky hummingbird so I was into it. If you have a more sophisticated palate, you might be offended, but I was delighted. They were kind enough to let us bring the dogs inside (it was a very slow monday) with us to eat, which was amazing since it was chilly and these are Texas chihuahuas, not accustomed to the chill in the air. Blake’s is definitely a fun stop if you’re ever in the area!

In honor of thanksgiving, here’s an iconic photo of the OG senior of the Dumptruck house, Ruthie, who never met a food she didn’t love. Here she is, trying to eat a whole roll with no teeth (and I’m pretty sure she succeeded). She was the best and worst dog we’ve ever had: super selfish, spiteful, and yet, a feminist icon and a fierce ambassador for self care. We miss her every day 🩷

I feel like I really accomplished something today 😆 I purchased these Bite ‘n Brush toys from @mywoof (use DUMPTRUCKS10 for a discount) but the dental chews to go in the toys are out of stock. Since I (aka the dogs) wanted to play with “my” new toy, I had to find a solution! I had these mini tremenda sticks from @tuesdaysnaturaldogcompany (will link in my stories) and @virbac_us enzymatic toothpaste on the bristles of the toy. Buttercup lost her mind and is still chomping, while Hops looks on, so I need to make one for him too! There’s nothing like watching your little therapy dog help kiddos feel better about reading. Buttercup mostly goes to elementary schools to help the English as a second language kids get more practice with reading, and the kids love her. She’s patient when the kids need it and she’s so good at figuring out who needs a softer approach. If they’re nervous about dogs and need space, she keeps her distance until they’re ready to pet her.
