Sanctuary piggy Oreo is nearing 7 1/2 years old by our best guess. He quickly developed a golfball sized lump under his chin last week and was taken to Animal and Bird Clinic in Sugar Land. Turns out he had a tooth-related abscess and needed a trim and drainage of the abscess. Oreo is taking his antibiotics twice a day like a pro. He's also on nebulized medication for a respiratory infection. The abscess might take awhile to heal, so send him all the good thoughts you can so he isn't uncomfortable for long! He will have a two week follow up, if not sooner should the abscess continue to refill with fluid or he has any decrease in appetite.

Texas is getting COLD so this is worth repeating! ALL your small mammal pets should be indoors.
Some things you can do to keep your piggies warm right now:
Provide big piles of hay for them to burrow in.
Add extra fleece or fluffy piggy-safe blankets under their hidey huts and swap them out twice a day (so they aren't sitting in a chilly pee-soaked pad).
Put fleece cozies or cuddle cups in their cage.
Move cages away from outer walls/windows if able, or place a towel on that side of the cage as another barrier to the chill.
Cover part of the top of the cage with a towel.
Pay attention to where air vents are in relation to the cage.
Fragile piggies may benefit from a small-animal safe heating pad or disc. They must be well and mobile enough to get off of the heat themselves in case they get too warm.
Make sure to change bedding frequently to keep their living area dry.
If power goes out, generators cannot be used indoors. Ideally the animals will be nowhere near generator fumes.
Move them into a smaller cage and away from windows if possible.
Bundle up their cages even more, leaving space for air circulation and fresh oxygen to get into the cage.
Check on them frequently to make sure the air is circulating and their temperature seems okay.
Be prepared with stored water and enough pellets and hay. (ORDER NOW if you are close to out! No one, including delivery workers, want to be out if it gets icy!).
Guinea pigs will survive without fresh vegetables. They can even survive without pellets for a time if need be. They absolutely do need constant access to hay and water to keep their guts going, but do not risk your safety just to get them romaine.
Check with close friends and family to see who may be willing to be a backup plan if you lose power for a long time and they don't.
Please share your tips below for what you are doing to keep your piggies warm!

Meet Me Monday!
Hello! We are a pair of adorable little muppets named Kermit and Fozzie! We are a handsome pair of boys of about a year old, so we are full grown. Fozzie is a little slower and enjoys the lazy life. I, Kermit, am all about living in the fast lane, and I like to go, go, go!!! 😁 We think we make a pretty balanced pair, don't you think? If you would like to know more about us, check out our Petfinder link for more photos and put in an application to meet us!
THANK YOU to all the fosters, volunteers, supporters, and adopters who made this possible! 120 lives saved, and 137 animals found new homes this year thanks to YOU!! 💞

Many places in the world will be celebrating with fireworks tonight for the new year. These fireworks tips for our little critters bear repeating! Add your tried and true tips below, they seem to go on for HOURS here!
Info from Oxbow Animal Health :
"While fireworks, sparklers, and the holiday hoop-la may be a blast for us humans, our furry friends can be less than thrilled at the sounds and noises associated with our festivities.
How can you keep your pet calm during fireworks? Follow these simple steps to provide the extra nurturing that your pet may need tonight:
Draw the curtains
Turn on the TV or radio
Provide plenty of hiding spots
Offer snacks to help with the stress
Talk to your pet to offer comfort
Talk to your neighbors
Stay home
Stick to sparklers"
Happy Monday! We are Samantha and Cassieopia! We are sweet girls who love our hideys and snuggly things. We also need our daily time to zip around the floor and eat lots of veggies! We are gorgeous and full grown and were just vet checked to be sure all is well for us to go to our forever home. Please put in an application to meet us!

Say Hi Saturday!
Hi! I'm Miss Kermit, er, I mean Bettina! I'm one of FOUR single ladies AGPR currently has who are looking for a friend! We are available for pairing with YOUR lonely girl piggy or neutered boy piggy. No babies for us! (If you aren't sure, don't worry, AGPR will double check the s*x of your piggy before trying to do any pairing!). The great thing about having so many choices for your piggy is if we don't quite mesh, we can try her with another one of the single ladies!
AGPR also has single males available for pairing attempts. If you want to know more about adding a second piggy to your home, check out our website and fill out an adoption application. We would be happy to chat with you!
Congratulations to Zoe on your adoption and finding a new friend in Maple!

Thinking about a last-minute gift of a furry friend? PLEASE think again! Animals should not be an impulse purchase. Unfortunately, the commercial pet stores that sell small animals make it very easy.
If you have a loved one who has been researching and talking about a small animal for at least a few months, and you (the adult) are excited about adding a small animal to the house, a fun gift would be to have some animal products to open, leading to the excited question of, "Are we getting a guinea pig!?!?" The recipient will love the excitement of preparing for their new pet and getting to pick out one that will fit their life and expectations. Sometimes what they thought they wanted doesn't match up with reality. It is great to find this out BEFORE involving a small animal.
We adopt out animals when there is a responsible adult who is willing to do 100% of the care, for the life of the animal. We have a two-part adoption application process and do not do same-day adoptions. This helps ensure that our animals are going to homes that have seriously thought about the addition of a furry family member and gives people time to ask questions. Many times people find out that a guinea pig is NOT the pet for them, or maybe the animal they loved online is not going to work in their family. Adopting an animal from a rescue is win-win for everyone involved!

Our Story
Austin Guinea Pig Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing and rehoming guinea pigs, chinchillas, hamsters, gerbils, mice, degus and hedgehogs in the Austin, Texas area. All of our animals are in private foster homes and an online application with a follow-up phone call with one of our board members is required. The adoption fee for guinea pigs is $30, for hamsters, gerbils, and mice $10, for chinchillas and hedgehogs is $65. We do not do same day adoptions. Once a submitted foster or adoption application has been reviewed, you can make an appointment to meet the animals. We do not have a public or drop-in facility.
We would like to announce that Austin Guinea Pig Rescue is going on hiatus until further notice. This does not affect pending adoptions, pairings, or applications currently being processed.
Any available animals will be listed on Petfinder and we will also post them on our page. As has been our policy, we will not take owner surrenders. We will always take back animals that were adopted from AGPR if the adopter’s circumstances change. We also will not be offering any boarding or other services at this time.
