A little under two weeks ago the Office of Undergraduate Education at Duke unexpectedly distributed a letter informing stakeholders that the Reginaldo Howard Scholarship has been discontinued. In response, countless alumni, current students and stakeholders of the scholarship fund have reached out to DBA leadership to express a multitude of reactions ranging from shock and disappointment to sadness and outrage. More importantly, these constituents have wanted to know how DBA plans to respond.

To that end, we wanted to take a moment to share with you what has transpired since we first learned of this decision and what our plans are moving forward.

What has DBA done since the announcement?

In the immediate aftermath of the decision, DBA has honed in on four (4) primary goals that have guided our actions:

1. Gather information from the University
2. Solicit feedback from Stakeholders, Alumni and Current Students
3. Express the collective response of Duke Black Alumni to the institution
4. Strategize a path forward that focuses on achieving the optimal outcome for Students, Alumni and Stakeholders

With an eye toward our objectives, here is what we’ve done so far:

* April 15, 2024 - DBA held an emergency meeting with Duke Administrators seeking an explanation of the decision

* April 17, 2024 - DBA leadership formed a multi-generational taskforce to lead the collective response, plan of action and effort of working with University Administrators to achieve the best possible outcomes.

* April 22, 2024 - Issued a statement voicing our collective displeasure and expressing our concerns

What are DBA’s plans moving forward?

* On April 29, 2024 from 8:30pm - 10pm EST we will hold a town hall style meeting for Current Student, Alumni and Scholarship Stakeholders to help inform the committee of the ideal outcomes they would like to transpire.

* Ongoing - Task force meetings with Duke Administrators to drive the optimal outcomes moving forward

* Ongoing - Ad-hoc meeting with constituents for input, feedback, guidance

Join us on Saturday 02/03 from 12:30 - 3 PM in Newark as we celebrate Black History Month with fellow Duke alumni from across the Tri-State region.

This year we have a very special guest, Shavar D. Jeffries, Esq. A.B.’96, Duke alumnus and CEO of the KIPP Foundation. KIPP Public Schools is a national network of tuition-free public schools across the U.S. Mr. Jeffries has been an advocate for social justice and educational equity for more than two decades and his remarks will include the impact of the recent SCOTUS Affirmative Action rulings.

We're taking over Lagos (NYC)! Join us as we rent out two floors, the bar, and serve amazing food while celebrating each other and the holiday season. Arrive early to enjoy beats from the resident DJ at Lagos, network with friends, and munch on delicious jerk chicken, mac ‘n cheese, and much more.

Bring a friend and/ or partner as we kick off our hottest party yet. Come ready to mingle with other Duke Black Alumni and friends, meet new people, and learn how DBA Tri-State is getting more involved in the community.

Immediately following our holiday party, there will be an open mic, Spoken Word event at Lagos, featuring a live band.
