Sawhda

Sawhda SAWHDA’s mission is to provideour members with information on all sports canine. If we don't know about it, we'll find out about it.

We offer seminars and workshops on most dog sports and we are soooo fortunate to have in our membership people from a varied competition background who are active in the dog world. They compete in Rally obedience, formal obedience, Canine Good Neighbour, Scent Detection, Trick Dog work, Tracking, Scent Hurdle Racing, Agility, Draft Dog Work, Herding, Barnhunt, and IPO, so there is always somethin

g to practice with your dog. We draw our members from as far away as Yellowknife north, Coaldale east, and Cranbrook west. We are based in the SW corner of Alberta between Pincher Creek and the Crowsnest Pass. A family membership to the club costs $20 a year. Text 403 563 4135 or 403 563 0686 for more information.

Baby it's cold outside! Hypothermia in dogs occurs when their body temperature drops below the normal range, which is typically between 101°F and 102.5°F (38.3°C to 39.2°C). It can be a serious condition, especially in cold weather. Here are some signs to watch for:

Shivering: One of the first signs of hypothermia is shivering as the body attempts to generate heat.

Weakness or Lethargy: Affected dogs may be less active or show signs of weakness, appearing tired or unresponsive.

Cold Extremities: Ears, paws, and tails may feel cold to the touch, indicating a loss of body heat.

Slow or Shallow Breathing: Breathing may become slower or more shallow as the body tries to conserve energy.

Reduced Heart Rate: Slower pulse can indicate severe hypothermia.

Difficulty Walking: Dogs may struggle to walk or stand, displaying coordination problems or stumbling.

Pale or Blue Gums: The color of the gums may change, appearing pale or bluish, which can indicate poor circulation and oxygenation.

Uncontrolled Tremors: While mild shivering is common, severe and uncontrolled shaking is a more concerning sign.

Hunched Posture: Dogs may huddle or curl up tightly, trying to conserve warmth.

Confusion or Disorientation: Severe hypothermia can lead to confusion, disorientation, or even unconsciousness.

Coma: In extreme cases, hypothermia can result in coma or unresponsiveness.

What to Do if You Suspect Hypothermia:

Get Your Dog Indoors: Bring your dog into a warm environment immediately.

Use Blankets: Wrap your dog in warm blankets to help retain body heat.

Warm Water Bottles: Use warm (not hot) water bottles or heating pads wrapped in a towel to provide gentle warmth.

Monitor Temperature: If you can, check your dog’s temperature with a re**al thermometer. If it is below normal, continue warming them.

Seek Veterinary Care: If your dog shows severe signs of hypothermia or does not improve quickly, it’s important to seek veterinary assistance.

Prevention is key, so make sure to monitor your dog during cold weather and limit exposure to extremely low temperatures.

Our club arranged to have a float in the parade of lights last night in Pincher. It was a cool evening but thankfully we had some very great blankets and enthusiasts cheering us along the route to keep us warm. Thanks, Russ, Marilyn, Tracy, Bobbie, Corinne, Deb, and Sharlet for sharing the night and making it happen. 😎😎
