Cave Canis, translated from Latin, means ‘Take care of the dog” which, as dog owners, is our primary responsibility. To achieve this, our core objective at Cave Canis is to train both dogs and owners in a way that nurtures the dog’s instincts creating a balanced, healthy family pet and accomplished hunting partner. Kata graduated with honors from Animal Behavior College in 2007 and established Cav

e Canis with a focus on Obedience Training and Problem Behavior. She is a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) and is an AKC Canine Good Citizen Evaluator. Kata’s first dog training experience involved training seeing-eye dogs in Budapest and over the course of her career she has also worked for groomers and as a veterinary assistant. She now lives on 17 acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains, where she works with pointing breeds to hunt and all breeds for basic obedience and problem behaviors. Her board and train programs vary from dog to dog from 2 weeks to 4 months.

Throwback Thursday! Raising puppies is one of my favorite things to do. I love spending time with them. Sitting, playing and watching them. It is amazing to see how much you can actually see their character and personality develop at such a young age. And when I tell you I’ll pick your puppy for you, that’s why. Because I know these puppies. And this is also the reason I talk to everyone so I can match you with the puppy of your dreams.

Weekend with some of my favorites!

We took a quick road trip to Fisherville, VA where Akác went Best of Breed the first day out of 9 wirehaired vizslas and finished her Grand Champion title with a 5 point major. She gained this title in 4 shows!

Her son, Cave Canis Hunor (Oszkár) took Best of Opposite with a 3 point major and the next day Akác was happy to watch him take Best of Breed for another 3 point major and finish his Champion title.

We can now just enjoy Summer training days and getting ready for the season!

Every dog is different, even within the breed. Some, I have to wait until the very end to praise and stand still so they stay focused on their tasks.

And some, I have to show my excitement and joy throughout their tasks to keep them going.

Women need other women in their lives who think they are a big deal. No competition, no backhanded comments, no jealousy, no hate, just I love you, you’ve got it, I support you and there is no one on Earth like you kind of energy.

Backing, honoring it doesn’t matter what you call it. What it means is that when more than one dog is hunting if one goes on point the other dog or dogs have to stop and “honor” or “back” the pointing dog. They trust and “honor” that he or she found a bird and none of them want the bird to flush and fly away before the hunter gets there. So they all stop.

To achieve this you need a bird and a brace mate. You need to run your dogs with another dog. I am lucky that I can hunt with my dogs and they learn to trust each other and with that they will honor each other.

And what a beautiful sight it is when they hunt together!

The importance of grooming your wirehaired vizsla

I am so proud of Bart for taking the time and following my instructions on how to strip Isla.
They liked her fuzzy looks so they didn’t take her puppy coat out for a year. Depending on their coat and on your grooming skills your wirehaired vizsla can develop the fluffier coat or a more harsh wire coat.
The difference between the two pictures are unbelievable!

Spring training is in full swing! Zeke needs to work on retrieving to hand consistently. During hunting season he became too worried about missing out on finding more birds so his hand delivery became really sloppy.

Great way to end our season by running 2 puppies in and watching one of our pups run .

Both Nitró and Oszkár earned a Prize I and László, who was ran by his owner, Pete earned a Prize III. I could not be more proud of their team! Pete trained his first hunting dog and ran him in this test. I am so thankful for him for giving László (Cave Canis Huba) the best life!

Oszkár (Cave Canis Hunor) blew my mind! He is always so social and today he put his game face on and got maximum (112) points! Thank you Karissa for letting me work with him and for always being so flexible about me dragging him with me to tests and shows.

Zöldmáli-Hunter Nitró started the day with some pain meds and killed his retirement hunt test.
He got 108 points and earned his Prize I. He was a little too excited to point so he got all 4’s except in pointing, where he got a 3.

Today was a great way to end the season! Now onto surgeries, recovering and getting ready for the next season!

Stay tuned!

Loved watching this guy’s transformation over the last month as he stayed with us. From chasing birds like a puppy to learning the bird field. Slowing down, ranging beautifully and holding his point until I come to flush. He even sits down naturally when the bird takes off and I shoot. He watches and then chases, which he will learn not to but for now as a 10 month old puppy, he is doing amazing. Thank you for letting me have Boone to bring the best out of him. Now my next goal is to get you a shotgun so we can go hunting together.

Our Story

Kata graduated with honors from Animal Behavior College in 2007 and established Cave Canis with a focus on Obedience Training and Problem Behavior.

In 2016, she began working with gun dogs using positive reinforcement only. She believes that if owners take the time to build a bond with their dogs, they can achieve the same goals that they would with an e-collar.
