Small Senior Paws Retirement Village Since 2014 SSPRV has been providing older/hospice/hard to place small senior dogs rescued from puppy mills and shelters a loving, forever home.

We are located in Peyton Colorado. Many dogs are rescued from puppy mills and other unfortunate circumstances but not all are able to find a loving forever home in a timely manner. Some rescued animals are terminally ill. Others are skittish, nervous and/or fearful. Others are so old that they are consistently passed up for adoption. These dogs need an environment where they can get love, attentio

n, and proper medical care so they can live out their days in a home instead of a kennel where they can learn what it is to be a dog. One that is safe loved and cared for. If dogs are in a kill shelter, they may end up euthanized for no other reason than they did not find a home before their time was up. Those in no kill shelters may spend months on end in a kennel environment. Granted it is in a better environment than where they came from, but they deserve better. Small Senior Paws Retirement Village provides its residents with a home situated in the scenic countryside of southern CO. There are no kennels or runs to keep the dogs isolated for no reason. There is, however, space available to separate dogs as needed by utilizing different rooms in the house and gates. As it is important that the dogs get along, dogs are screened on a case-by-case basis to be sure they can assimilate into the pack without incident. Due to the nature of the facility, space is limited so new dogs will be added as space permits. Although Small Paws Retirement Village is designed for dogs, placement for cats may occasionally be considered, again on a case-by-case basis. All dogs are treated as members of a family. They are provided with medical care as needed including checkups, vaccinations, dentals, medication as required and emergency care if/when necessary. The dogs are fed a quality diet twice a day, provided with healthy treats and are groomed regularly. They are provided with a comfortable living environment including lots of beds, sun porch, a doggie door to a secure covered grassy outdoor area, and two other secure outdoor areas where they can get lots of sun and exercise without risk of them getting in harms way.

It is a little surreal. Jack has been here with me since January of 2021. He's one heck of a fighter... Addisions Disease, he lost an eye, almost lost his other one, was found to have heart worms, and then went through what the vet called an Addisonian crisis a few months ago and managed to survive that. And through it all he was sweet, loving, and loved everyone he met.

Well today, at 13 1/2 years of age, Jack told me it was time to be with his friends on the other side of the šŸŒˆ bridge. So this afternoon Jack and I took his last ride to the vet and at 4:40 I held Jack as he crossed the šŸŒˆbridge. He has been relatively quiet of late so it is hard to realize/accept that he is no longer here.

My dearest Jack,
You have filled my heart with so much love and took a chunk of it with you when you left this earth today. So many people fell in love with you, many who never even had the opportunity to meet you. I am somewhat at peace knowing that for the first time in a long time, you are all better, feeling great, and hanging out with your friends from here at the village (many of which you are meeting for the first time). Run free my loving little man (Jack, One-eyed Jack, Just Jack) and be happy until we meet again.
XO,
Love, Mama

Wow. We all survived. Just to let you know from the pictures, I have no running water through my property. My guess is itā€™ll be gone in a couple hours. Itā€™s been so dry out here. Thanks for sharing this experience with me and the dogs šŸ’©ļæ¼

Just to clarify. We have water. In fact, we have a lot of water running through my yard. We usually donā€™t šŸ™‚. it even came in the doggie door. Luckily the piddle pads in there soaked up most of the water. I couldnā€™t get up because I was taking care of the dogs. Itā€™s all good. The water on the sunroom floor will help me get the floor clean faster.

We are home. Sloane is having a difficult time finding a place where sheā€™s comfortable and wants to rest. Hopefully when the anesthesia wears off a little bit, things will become a little bit more normal. In the meantime, Iā€™m keeping an eye on her and making sure that sheā€™s OK. Thank you again for all of your prayers. ļæ¼

Update: Sloane is out of surgery and doing well. She only had five teeth, now she has two. She is now spayed so no worries about any future female issues. Once she wakes up a little more we will be on our way home. Thank you all for your prayers and concerns.

Sloane is the type of dog where you canā€™t get much done unless she is sedated. So once they put her under, they had a chance to look in her mouth and she is also getting a dental today. Iā€™m sure sheā€™ll feel a lot better and maybe she wonā€™t be so leery of people afterwards.

Sloane/Kitty is getting spayed today. Please say a prayer that all goes well. Thanks. ļæ¼

On Monday, Sloane got to meet our vet, Dr. Bush. She is a feisty little dog that does not like having her face messed with so the poor little girl had to wear a muzzle. Consequently, they couldnā€™t thoroughly check her teeth. The recent bloodwork in her file was good. Her heart is goodā€¦ no murmur, which is rare for many of our residents. From what they could see of her teeth and the rest of her exam, they are estimating her age to be about 12 years old, not 15. So yay for her!

They were able to clean her ears and test for dry eye. It turns out she does have dry eye in both eyes. She is supposed to get eyedrops in both eyes twice a day, but due to her feisty nature, and that she absolutely does NOT like it, Iā€™m doing what I can to try and get them in at least once a day. It stinks to be the bad guy, but a girlā€™s gotta do what a girlā€™s gotta do. ļæ¼

Do you remember before she arrived here at the village, I was thinking of changing her name and wanted to name a dog Kitty? Well, although Sloane is a pretty name, it just doesnā€™t seem to fit as much as I thought it would. Iā€™m seriously considering changing her name to Kitty. She acts like a Kitty. Sheā€™ll let you pet her until she doesnā€™t. But she is sweet I am glad she is here.

Looking at her medical records carefully, we discovered that it didnā€™t say she was spayed. The rescue we got her from was told that she was spayed and did have a dental. After a few phone calls later that day calling phone numbers on the paperwork in her file, it turned out she had not been spayed. These things happen sometimes.

So this sweet girl will be spayed on the 20th. At that time they could take a good look at her mouth and see if she has any need for a dental also. ļæ¼

Welcome home Sloane/Kitty. At least she likes the food I give her and gets along with all the other dogs. She can easily get up and down off the bed (with or without the ramp) which is her favorite place to sleep. I know she doesnā€™t hate me because she lets me sleep there too. šŸ™‚ ļæ¼ļæ¼

Sloane had a good night last night. I showed her where the ramp was and helped her climb it. She slept in that spot all night. This morning after wandering around a little I put her back on the bed and she and Callie were trying to decide who has the rights to my pillow.

Today Sloane is much more comfortable wandering around with the other dogs as long as there is not a lot of barking (like at feeding time or when someone comes over). She is fitting in well.

Thank you, Charis and Dee for Sloaneā€™s ride here to the village. With Amos and Angus not quite used to new people in the house, it was a bit crazy so sweet Sloane was a bit nervous. Now Charis and Dee are on their way home and it has quieted down considerably. ļæ¼

I had heard that Sloane likes being on the bed so now that it is quiet, I put her on the bed with me and about four other dogs. She is now resting comfortably with her head on my arm.

I think it will take Sloane a little while to get used to everybody but one thing we know around here is patience. Sloane can come around at her own speed and we will do whatever we need to to keep her comfortable and safe.

I was wondering if I would keep Sloaneā€™s name until someone posted a comment on a previous post of ours telling the meaning behind the name. I looked it up and it fits especially ļæ¼because sheā€™s a little timid right now. So I think Iā€™m going to keep her name.

ā€œf you want to inspire baby to take on life's challenges with a fighting spirit, Sloane is a sweet name worth considering.ā€

Welcome home Sloane.

Amos and Angus are settling in just fine. They even want to sleep near my bed at night. They are almost always together and always snuggle together. They are not up to being loved on yet except for a few chin scratches as they sniff my fingers.

In the photo from top to bottom are Bella, Amos, Angus and Kokee. To the right of Kokee is Charlee who is waiting for me to get out of bed and let her into the bathroom where she can greet Elf the cat with an over-exuperant good morning. To the very upper right is Ginny.

At night there is about 20 dogs in the bedroom either on the bed with me (there is a ramp on the other side of the bed) or in the numerous beds covering most of the bedroom floor.

Thank you John Fenlaw!
