About Bentley’s Closet
Our first boxer, Bentley, was born with an inherited heart condition called Subaortic Stenosis (SAS). SAS is where the passage way from the left side of the heart to the aorta is abnormal causing a pressure overload and the heart to work harder to push blood through. Due to the added work the heart muscles thicken, hold less blood and need more oxygen. The heart cannot tole
rate these conditions and ultimately results in heart failure. Bentley’s case of SAS was severe which meant a lot of doctor/emergency room visits, dealing with other illnesses due to his suppressed immune system, and costly crucial medications. Unfortunately he only lived to be three years old, but thanks to the great medical staff and support from others who understood our love for this dog, he had a wonderful and fulfilled three years. The goal of Bentley’s Closet is to eventually be able to help families financially, who are in a predicament similar to what my husband and I were in while caring for our beloved Bentley. Fortunately, we could afford the necessary, routine veterinary care and were even prepared to cover costs of unexpected issues that may arise, but when he was diagnosed with SAS we had no idea how much that would lead to. It was stressful at times not knowing how we were going to pay for medications, specialist visits, and ultimately how to give him the best quality of life. Somehow we made it happen, sometimes having to accept help from others, now we would like to be able to provide support to those who may need it.
