SNERK!

In all seriousness, don't hire a bite work trainer to teach your dog to be a good family dog. They have a completely different model of living with their dogs that is not conducive to a pet dog home. You need a dog who's calm and happy and having fun. You do not need a military Soldier who is worried about the next thing coming around the corner and who relies on a boss to tell them what to do every second of the day.

Just a little note from a client tonight! :D

"We had such a good night tonight.. We had our friends over, x̌######x, ######, and their daughter x̌######x, who we love and is autistic. We started Lucy out in our bedroom,, then let her out when we were enjoying an evening fire.. us on the outside and Lucy inside.. by mistake Lucy scooted out around me and joined us and our friends on the back porch.. SHE WAS AWESOME... almost like she was saying,,, see,, I can be a good girl.. she was very shy but sniffed and decided everyone one ok. She even tried to get up on x̌######xx's lap. I believe it is because of the work you have done with her. When they left,, we did put her on lead and she did do a few uncomfortable sounds as they moved thru the house to leave.. Bottom line,,, we feel it was a huge win. We have ordered an extra tall doggy gate for our hallway so that she can be present but also separated. We feel this will be so much
better than putting her in the back bedroom where this always gets her anxiety up. We plan to get some more time with you in December. We appreciate everything you have done for us and Lucy..."

Occasionally someone pops along here with the idea that I have no practical experience with dogs, couldn't handle a working dog and that's why I don't understand why 'tools' are needed for some dog breeds.

I was in a bite suit and operationally searching for live explosives with dogs decades ago. Working breeds are easier to train with positive reinforcement because they are literally born to work. Dogs don't need prong collars - poor trainers do - because they haven't learned or skilled up enough.

And if you can't teach a companion breed to volunteer something, by using a marker, you have a long way to go with your training. I would say you're not a dog trainer, because that's brain work. A prong collar is not brain work.

If you think you need to expose an innocent dog to a prong collar you don't. You need to learn more.

It really is as simple as that.

And here endeth the lesson.

All dogs deserve safety.

It's a welfare right.

Don't poke the bear.

I am the bear 🐻😅

Any of my friends or clients in the genrral Lebanon area with dog-friendly dogs want to do some get togethers?

Local students and colleagues-- would you be interested in attending presentations in person?

I'm thinking of doing some Library presentations where I get together with a couple of trainer friends and we go in depth into some doggy topics.

Stress, recovery, theory, maybe even practical hands on work with people! What do you think?

I use a very similar protocol to this when working with big bad reactive and aggressive dogs. Obviously we have to do a lot more safety protocols with adult dogs, but this technique works. Hats off and a great big thumbs up to Ian Dunbar for bringing these methods to the public. It works.

If you want to see my take on this check out our file dog fights in the family.
