Sooo excited to have found Great Mullein in the garden! I made Mullein cough syrup 20 years ago! I can’t wait to do so again, just need a few more plants. It is a little known fact that herbal remedies are a huge part of my business, but they really are integral to what I offer.

I’ve been looking into these eyes a lot lately! Archie had a sarcoid treated above the other eye, with mitomycin treatment- the surrounding tissue had an inflammatory response, so his eyelid swelled up like a golf ball! He’s on strong anti inflammatories, which have done the trick, so the swelling is finally going down!

I’ve been supplementing with milk thistle seed powder from - milk thistle’s active compound, silymarin, has well documented liver and kidney boosting properties, as well as being high in antioxidants.

Thank you everyone for all your well wishes! Shadow is doing remarkably well - as though nothing ever happened really! He has some large surgery wounds that need daily aftercare- I’ll spare you all the gory pictures.

Huge thanks to Stuart Altoft and the team - here’s to a sarcoid free pony 🤞🤞🤞

Amen to this! Complimentary feeds & supplements can be an amazing addition to your horse’s health plan. Medicinal herbs have also stood the test of time, so they absolutely deserve a place at the “big boys table”, but that doesn’t mean we are ever making them out to be a stand alone cure.

Supplement - A thing that is added to something else to improve or complete it.
(Oxford English Dictionary)

I find it mildly amusing on social media when people feel the need to shout - usually using CAPITAL LETTERS - to make a point that supplements do not cure X

I'd like to hope that nobody would suggest that supplements, alternative therapies or other natural products are the bee all and end all, magic wand that makes things just disappear but they can be useful to help in the journey of your horses & ponies.

If your horse has lost half their mane from rubbing it away then coconut oil will not magically make it reappear within 24hrs! Likewise if you feed milk thistle your horses kidneys, liver, coat, skin & hooves are not going to transform in a few days but over time by supplementing their diets with things they need it can help to improve them.

Science is great, it helps with so many things but it doesn't get it right all the time & does have a habit of changing its mind too! Holistic animal care, which includes the use of natural herbs is also great and can work side by side anything else you are doing when caring for your animals.

Shadow tried on a fly rug for size, gratefully provided to us by … This is to protect his sarcoids from flies, and then protect the wounds after his laser surgery to have them removed!

He’s doing really well with his weight & raised pulses, thanks to his amazing supplemental herbs from - we are also using their EqWax Neem around his sarcoids to prevent flies. So he smells glorious 😉

Hopefully we are heading out in the trailer tomorrow for a short trip as part of travelling practicing in anticipation of his vet visit… That’s if I can walk as I’ve strained a ligament in my knee- currently elevated with my PEMF wrap! 😬

Merlin curled up on the PEMF mat, really soaking up the benefits of the electromagnetic fields, which promote tissue healing, reduce inflammation and help with pain relief!
Merlin has osteoarthritis, and this was his first physiotherapy treatment. He also had red light therapy over his joints and his back, some soft tissue massage, and some myofascial release, particularly over his back where he was quite restricted 🤩
We discussed diet, rest, and changes to the environment to help slow the progression of his arthritis (much of which his humans are already doing 😎). He is also going to get extra grooming to aid circulation, and another treatment in three weeks, so that we can stop the negative cycle of compensation, but also build enough trust to do more with him, by having the more frequent sessions. 🌟

Physiotherapy can even be done in bed on a Saturday morning! We believe Inca-puss has hurt strained a flexor tendon in his front left leg, probably by jumping from height. Under the blanket he’s on is my PEMF mat, so he’s getting some Pulsed Electromagnetic Field therapy from that twice a day, and had a massage last night 💪

Time for a Shadow update!! He is officially losing weight 🙌 🙌 and is doing well on a strict management of his diet and the addition of the amazing herbs from … I’ve been only giving him the herbs for the last month, along with his usual forage, to see how well he does on just the straight herbs. He is much better! He still needs really close monitoring though and he’s 153kg, so still got to lose more- lots more exercise is on the horizon. We also have his lazer surgery for sarcoid removal booked with for the 17th July- so watch this space for an update on that!

I'm often asked what the best fly repellent is but thats like asking how long is a piece of string. Truth is what works for one might not work for another, you have to find something that works for your horse.

Whether you love a balm, wax or spray we have some great natural repellents to help you out....

No Fly Balm - The power of bog myrtle, lemon eucalyptus, carrot seed & patchouli oils combine to offer protection against both midges & flies. All in a skin friendly shea butter & olive wax base.

Lemongrass Fly Repellent - A good all rounder in a wax base it does the job & smells divine too.

Alternative Fly Spray - Containing Neem this spray is perfect to fight the midges.

Fly Off - Bog Myrtle, Cedarwood, Lemon Eucalytpus & Peppermint come together in a skin friendly Aloe Vera base to fight both midges & flies.

Find them all on the webshop www.ecogreenequestrian.co.uk

We all had a really heartbreaking loss of Bonnie Boy last night. Tragically we were just about to move the ‘pet flock’ closer to the house so we could spend even more time with them… He had had the whole day free ranging the paddocks with the girls, but when we arrived in the evening to move the gypsy wagon to the house, he was laying there dead 😢. We’d spent time with him in the day, and you can see in the pic where he was in the foreground (taken yesterday) he was still full of zest for life! We found a big worm for him earlier in the day, which he chivalrously gave to Winnie, as was always his way.
With the Gypsy Wagon right outside the house now, we should have woken up to his crowing, so the silence left a big hole. We’ve had Bonnie Boy from a chick in 2015… He will be so sorely missed.

Spotlight on Shadow!
Shadow has metabolic issues, and has come in with raised pulses today. Using products from EcoGreen equestrian he’s going to have daily; Detox Free herbal mix, seaweed & rosehips, and lemon balm, because he selected that too. The Detox free has in it: linseed, clivers, dandelion leaf, nettles, burdock root, milk thistle powder, celery seed & hawthorn leaves.
He’s also on restricted grazing, nighttime access to the track (he can still get at some grass on the track so can’t be 24:7), as lib straw, restricted meadow hay… And we are upping his exercise! His weight is 156kg, and he is condition score 4.
Shadow has sarcoids, which I will do another post about soon. He has also had cold induced laminitis previously, so that coat that he’s holding onto needs to shed naturally & with the help of a bit of elbow grease, rather than clipping it off! He has mild rainscald, so working on that too. He needs a bit of extra TLC!

So stay tuned for a monthly shadow update!
