Dexter's Creature Comforts Durable and cozy hammocks for your small pets. I make durable and comfy hammocks mainly for rats, but they're suitable for all kinds of small animals.
(51)

The hammocks are made with 3 layers of fleece wherever possible, or in some cases, 2 layers of fleece and a layer of UHaul padding for extra durability. Top stitching is incorporated to try and slow down pets that like to chew. I've been making hammocks for the last 8 years and began selling them to help cover the costs of vet bills and food etc. for the rescue. For the last 10 years I've been tak

ing in unwanted and abandoned domestic pet rats and finding them new homes. Your support means such a lot to me as it enables me to continue helping these amazing animals.

We have a new little friend. 🤎
This itsy bitsy deer mouse was discovered by someone in their car. It was almost two weeks old, so its chances of survival were quite high. For the first couple of days it very enthusiastically took formula on a tiny paintbrush, but now its eyes are open and it can drink from a VERY shallow dish all on its own. When the time is right, little Mousie will go back in the wild. I'll build him an insulated box and provide food and water to help it along the way. 🤎

Because i've been having a few issues sending fabric photos to people in DMs, I've decided to go back to the way I used to do things and keep the available fabrics listed by fabric type - fleece, cotton etc. in Photo Albums on the page. It should make things a lot simpler. I'll provide links below, but you can find all the albums by going to photos>albums>
If you're interested in placing an order, DM me with your zip or post code and the items you're interested in and I'll get back to you with a price.
FLEECE - great for all hammocks, Bonding Scarves and Bonding Bags.
https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1067405855387593&type=3
COTTON - Suitable for mpst hammocks with the exception of Ratwalks/Fallbreakers, Corner Hides and Corner Cozies. Ideal for Bonding Bags but not suitable for Bonding Scarves as it's too thin.
https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1067415362053309&type=3
FLANNEL - Good for mosr hammocks, but like cotton, I prefer not to use it for Ratwalks/Fallbreakers, Corner Hides, Corner Cozies or Bonding Bags. It is however great for Bonding Scarves ( it's just thick enough to protect you from little nails.)

Meet our gorgeous new rescue boys! Yesterday I took in 8 ratties. 7, 3 month old boys and their young dad. They've come from a bad environment and haven't been handled, so they are quite shy and nervous right now. They'll come to the cage bars to sniff me, but they are not comfortable being touched or picked up yet. I'm hoping I can work some magic in the next few weeks and turn them into squishy, mellow chaps. These guys are young, so they should respond to trust training quickly. Then it'll be time to find their forever humans. Because these guys have such exquisite markings and there are a number of blues in the group , I expect they'll find 🏡 quite quickly. They're currently located in the Okanagan Valley, BC, Canada, but we have transport links with the lower mainland and beyond. As usual, DM me if you'd like a copy of the application.

FB has been a bit tricksy recently, and I haven't been able to message people with photos of the available fabrics, so i'm going back to the old way of keeping everything listed in Photo Albums. There'll be a separate album for Fleece, Cotton, Flannel and another for all the rat prints. Hopefully it'll make it easier for everyone to see what's in stock and I'll do my very best to keep the albums up to date.

UPDATE, they have found their new human! ♥️These two gorgeous lads are Pluto and Jupiter and they're about 6 months old. They were an owner surrender and arrived in separate cages because they weren't getting along and blood had been shed! They'd puff up at the slightest hint of another rat, so we decided the best thing to do was get them both neutered. Now their teenage hormones have calmed down, they are best friends once more, and ready to find their forever people.
While they might be a little shy at first, they warm up quickly with a little patience and love. They would thrive in a home where someone has the time to spend with them, offering gentle handling and positive interactions. With the right care, these sweet boys will continue to gain confidence. As they are both neutered, they could be a wonderful addition to a male or female mischief. Feel free to DM me if you think they might be a good fit.

UPDATE The boys have found their new people! Thanks to everyone for your interest.,
Remember the boys, Stewart and Drifter who were dumped at the remote recreation campground and were found two whole weeks apart? I have an update to share. They are reunited and living together again!! They had a bit of a rocky start - lots of nipping (me mostly)and not getting along with each other, so I decided to get them both neutered in the hope it would help them become more relaxed, and calm, and to increase their chances of finding a new human. They are now four weeks post neuter, and it's made such a difference. They were re-introduced to one another just two weeks after their surgery. It took a little longer for the nipping to subside, but as you can see from the video, that's no longer an issue, although Stewart, the dumbo eared boy, does like to groom intensely and has decided my clothes are food!
They are now two of the calmest and most snuggly boys I've ever met and are my fave TV watching buddies as they'll crash and snooze for hours. I truly wish I could keep them, but I've promised myself I'll get mischief number down. They are currently in Kelowna, BC, Canada, and we have transport available on August 5 to the lower mainland. If you think they'd be a good fit for you , message me and I'll send a copy of my application.

Remember the 3 little girls that had been housed together in the tiny cage, just about big enough for a hamster? They've been living the good life ever since and have grown and blossomed in their foster home. They're no longer skinny and shy and are ready to meet their new humans. If you think you might be the one, please message me. We are located in the Okanagan Valley, BC, and have good transport links to get them to the lower mainand and possibly across the border iin to WA. .

Update from Valerie about the injured rat. Thanks to everyone that helped with sharing the post and donating- she's now safe 🤎
"I want to update all of you on the little rescue girl we took in! She is truly beautiful and amazing and we will be leaving in about 45 minutes to head to her first vet appointment ❤️She was initially scared but warmed up literally within moments and came out and visited all the kids and was giving kisses to everyone. Abigail originally wanted to name her Captain Rattosaurus but changed her mind and now I’d like to introduce CAPTAIN WINK the PIRATASAURUS ( because she looks like she’s winking and only has one eye like a pirate Captain)"

Update on the update! She's arrived at Valerie's and will be seeing the vet this afternoon. The second pic was taken last night . UPDATE This little girl is on her way to Valerie as we speak and should arrive around 8 o'clock tonight. She has a vet appointment scheduled for tomorrow afternoon and Valerie will be able to keep her comfortable until then. We still don't know the extent of her injuries, but a partial tail amputation and possible eye removal are almost guaranteed. So much is unknown. We're still fundraising to make sure Valerie has the money to cover the surgeries and for her ongoing care.
Massive thanks to everyone that's donated so far, I'm astounded at the kindness and generosity of the community. I bloody love you!! I'll keep everyone updated on her progress as soon as I know anything.

Can anyone help? My good friend, and rat rescuer, Valerie Scott needs help with an urgent situation to get an injured ratty transported to her so she can get it a vet ASAP. Valerie was contacted by the original owner to say her young son is dealing with serious mental health problems and had injured her rats. The other rat passed away due to internal injuries and the remaining, solo girl has a degloved tail and an eye injury that need immediate veterinary care. Due to the urgency and concern for her safety, this little girl needs to get to Valerie as soon as possible. Transport is available tomorrow, but at a cost, and Valerie has raised half of the $429 needed. Once she gets here there will be additional vet costs and most likely surgery to amputate the degloved tail. If you can spare anything at all, even the cost of a cup of coffee, please consider helping to get this little one the care she desperately needs. I will post Valerie's contact information in the comments, but please feel free to reach out to me if you have further questions.

UPDATE- Kirby has found a home . A friend adopted hedgehog only to find out the hedgehog was pregnant and went one to have 5 little babies! . Kirby is looking for his forever human. He's currently located in Kelowna , BC, but it's possible we could find transport out to the lower mainland in the next few weeks. Please message me if interested and I'll give you the owners details .
Here's a little bit about him .
Kirby is a 9 month old male hedgehog. He's a little shy at first, but once he gets to know you, he's very friendly. He has been living in a foster home with young children and has got along great. He is also used to the presence of cats and dogs. Kirby enjoys his cat food, but absolutely loves meal worms and likes to forage for them in his snuffle mat. Hedgies are nocturnal animals who sleep all day and become active at night. Kirby typically wakes up around midnight and goes back to sleep around 7-8am. He spends most of the night running on his wheel. He needs to be kept warm and have regular baths, which although they aren't his favourite, he tolerates. Hedgies are very sensitive to strong smells and it's important not to use air fresheners in the same room. Because they are prone to dry skin, a humidifier is recommemded. Message me if you think Kirby might be a good fit for your home. He comes with his enclosure and wheel etc.

Perfect whisker explosion, executed by Jupiter.
He came to me a few weeks ago as an owner surrender. He and his cagemate were fighting badly, and he was so scared of humans, he would scream when touched. Lots of gentle handling, a neuter, and more handling and he's making great progress. He no longer hides in the cage or runs away from me when I open the cage door. And the best thing- I was able to reintroduce him to his cagemate last week, so he has a friend once more! A couple more weeks and this gorgeous boy and his bro will be ready to find their new humans.

Happy long weekend from Josh! He's a Snack Ninja and tries not to stray too far from the food bowl- if he does, it's only to retrieve snacks he's placed strategically around the cage. Smart boy Josh the Nosh!

I can't quite believe how lucky this little guy is. Do you remember I posted about a single rat found at an out-of-the-way recreational campsite at the beginning of June? Someone saw my post, happened to be camping in the same area, and guess what? They saw another rat running around out there! This was over 2 weeks later! The two rats look very similar so I'm going to assume they are most likely siblings that were dumped at the same time. It's a minor miracle that this little guy survived for two weeks on his own, especially as there are so many predators in the area. Amazingly he's not that skinny, maybe hanging round a campsite and living off crumbs of food dropped by humans saved his life.
I've named him Barney, he's a little nippy and drew blood a few times with the family that initially saved him, ( way to show your thanks Barney!), so he's earned himself a neuter. Aside from that he seems quite confident and not afraid of people at all. Huge thanks to Diana for rescuing him and to Jade for transporting him to me. You're both amazing!
And, if anyone is camping out at Sugar Lake Campground north of Cheryvile, British Columbia, please keep an eye out just in case there are any more. You never know.

This is what TV time with my rats looks like. 💤💤💤
They are such adorable snugglers. Last night there were 8 rats and me. Joshua, Figgy, Rue, Selkie, Mack, Casper, Mighty Moosh and Timmy. After a couple of hours out of cage time, running round, they're happy just to chill .
Sorry the video quality is not great. I keep the lights low because boys don't like bright lights when they're napping 😃

18/06/2024

I always procrastinate about posting videos of Joshua, due to his excessive girth and the inevitable negative comments that follow, but here I am throwing caution to the wind and hoping you can enjoy the sound of this beautiful boy doing a happy cronch.
And please excuse my snorting.

I will never understand people who choose to dump animals as it's more often than not, a death sentence for them. This young guy is one of the lucky ones. He was abandoned out in the bush at a recreational camp site last week and had been seen in the area for a few days. Fortunately, someone who works at a local vet office was staying at the campsite and knew they had to help. They put a small cage out to try and trap him - and as you can see, they were successful! He was quite skinny and in need of food, but otherwise in good shape. He even got checked out at their vet office the next day. He is such a snuggler and a very special boy indeed. He's going to be an amazing addition to someone's mischief. I'm so very tempted to keep him, but I promised myself I'd get my number down. Once he's cleared quarantine and we can be sure he is in excellent
health, he will be available. If you think you might be his perfect person, please message me.

Some rescues are especially heartbreaking. I was contacted recently by someone I knew who'd heard of 3 rats that were going to be euthanized because the owners no longer wanted them. It's a bit of a story, and I don't want to go into detail about it here. Yesterday they arrived in the cage they'd been living in for at least 6 months and possibly longer. It's a hamster cage that doesn't even meet the basic requirements for a single hamster to live in, let alone 3 adult rats. The height of the cage is a mere 12" ( can of soda for size comparison). There was no enrichment. Not a single hide or bed. Nothing. It makes me wanna cry just looking at it. The food they were being fed looks like it contains hay and/or alfalfa, which rats cannot digest and all 3 of these beautiful little girls are very small for adults. The smallest weighs less than any of the 8 week old babies we have. Their tummies look a little distended, so we are hoping they are not pregnant and instead it's related to their diet, or lack of it.
On a happier note, they are now safe in a foster home with a whole double critter nation to themselves! They have warm, cozy beds, lots of toys and a high quality diet at last! I am so very grateful to our foster family, the Nadons, for being willing to take them in. You guys are wonderful. Thank you.

These two gorgeous boys were showing signs of hormonal aggression and could no longer live together, so last week they earned a visit to the vet to be neutered. They're healing well and are taking their pain meds like good boys. I don't know about you, but getting rats to take Metacam is one of my biggest challenges. I'm hoping we will see signs of improvement in the next few weeks, with the goal of reintroducing the two of them and finding a new 🏡. I'll keep you posted on their progress, but feel free to reach out to me if you think these guys might be a good fit for your mischief.

The zippered bonding bags have been really popular recently, especially in this cute, rat print fleece. Although I don't use this style of bag personally, feedback from customers has been excellent and they're a great way to carry your rats outside safely, and ideal for working with rats that are especially nervous and pose a flight risk, as they can be securely zippered in.
The bags
◾️Are fully lined with fleece and have no exposed seams.
◾️Have a double layer of pet screen so your rats can see what's going on outside.
◾️Have a zipper closure.
◾️Come with an adjustable strap.
◾️Have a boxed bottom with removable coroplast base that has a fleece cover you can take off and throw in the wash.
◾️Finished size is 14" wide x 13" tall approx.
◾️Suitable for a range of small pets - can be made in custom sizes.
There's loads of fun prints in fleece and cotton available if you'd like one made. DM me with your zip or post code and I'll get back to you ASAP.
