Dogs noses are fascinating organs having dual functions. I love watching (& listening) to them hard at work engaging the brain in tons of activity! 🧠💭

When I was studying for one of my courses that covered the dog brain and how it works, it showed a visual of a dog having an MRI carried out on its brain whilst sniffing various scent. During sniffing and processing of scent molecules it triggers all the neuro-transmitters in the brain to fire up making them look like a firework display going off in all different directions! There is so much information in scent and familiar scent triggers memories (good & bad!). Just like when we hear certain songs playing, we remember where we were or who we were with, or what we were doing when we first heard the song play! It triggers a memory! Certain smells can also trigger memories for humans too although much less than music evoked autobiographical memories!

Ten minutes of sniffing is the equivalent to roughly 30 minutes of exercise! Mental stimulation is very tiring and has so many benefits for your dog. 😴

[Frankie was sniffing scent for a good 4-5 minutes before I decided to video her nose in action...then she caught me, but I could tell she was almost done! I never want to disturb this pleasurable experience].

Frankie’s week started off somewhat eventful for her, but she handled things extremely well!

A small terrier in her neighborhood jumped a hedge & fence and charged at us barking! (It was just insecure!). It’s my job to protect the dog I am working with so I blocked the terrier from getting to Frankie and shouted “Hey!” to which it scampered back home! In some cases a confident voice is enough of a deterrent to scare a dog away!

Next we were squirked at by a cute little chipmunk (obviously didn’t approve of us walking by its tree house!). Then a neighborhood cat approached Frankie & just sat there! Frankie showed great restraint and didn’t react at all! She looked at the cat and then sat and looked at me! Great job Frankie!! 👏🩷 And that was only Monday! 😄

Tuesday was very hot (34 degrees!) so I took Frankie to the lake for a shady walk & water play. Frankie greeted one dog and calmly walked by two others. She also practiced swimming where she made great progress and actually swam a few times by the time we left the park! 🎉🤗💦

Wednesday was hot again so off to a forest and water we went! I couldn’t get Frankie out of the water, which shows her confidence is building. On the way back, we stopped off to grab a pup cup for Frankie. She was in whipped creamy heaven! 😋

Thursday was shop training and after getting Frankie settled in, I left the store to leave Frankie and her mom alone to work on training without me! They did very well and Frankie remained composed with customers in the store. Just a bit more work needed to help build confidence. Believe in yourself, I know you can do it! 👍💞

By Friday the weather was much cooler and we went for a walk in Frankie's neighborhood. Frankie calmly greeted two dogs (once they stopped barking!); one was nervous, one insecure, who Frankie helped calm down by displaying avoidance signals whilst the owner stopped to chat. Frankie was being such a good girl. 🤗🩷🐕🐩

Great job Frankie, you are doing awesome! 👏🥰

Yay Frankie had her first swim today, I'm so proud of her 🤗🎉🩷

A bit clumsy at the start (each dog has their own style!), but she's getting the hang of it and is way more confident in water. I couldn't get her out after several sessions today! 😎👏👏

Frankie is making consistently great progress. She enjoys exploring her new neighborhood and stops to greet neighbors & likes to watch people mow their lawns! I always walk at Frankie’s pace (even when she’s a little Miss. Speedy Pants!). She also enjoys stopping to roll in grass in shady areas, especially in her yard! (I think she’s testing the depth of the grass to see if it’s been cut to Frankie’s standard!). 👩‍🌾🌱

Allowing a dog to take their time on walks to sniff scent, eliminate, people watch, observe, explore, etc. not only offers them mental stimulation but also provides information about their environment, allowing them time to process it, which can also include animal scent (receive & leave messages!), lowers stress levels, promotes rest & a deeper sleep, releases endorphins and improves mood, and can actually be more tiring than physical exercise! 👃🧠😴

Frankie is doing great visiting local stores and containing her excitement and calmly says ‘Hi’ without jumping up people! She even gets compliments on how calm and polite she is!! (Always a proud moment). 🤗🥰

Frankie continued her shop training this week, but this time I fully handed the reins over to her mom to practise real life scenarios! I left the store to avoid being a distraction to Frankie, but also to give total control to her mom! Frankie and her mom did really well without me there to guide them. They’ll be practising this more each week to gain confidence and fine tune the exercise further. 🫶

Frankie goes straight to her ‘place’ on entering the shop without direction and she knows what to do when customers enter the store, so we’ve fully proofed the training exercise. 🙌

Frankie is doing awesome with her current training so I am adding new training exercises, which I feel will benefit Frankie and her family as we go, or if I feel Frankie can improve on. I am always mindful that Frankie is never overwhelmed or pushed over her limit! Frankie has been carrying out sequence training, (carrying out several training exercises put together) so she learns new things and doesn’t become bored, which can sometimes happen with smart dogs who catch on quickly, get frustrated or when training becomes too easy for them, and they need to be challenged more! As Trainers, we are always adapting and using different tools to suit each dog’s individual needs. Training should always be fun, exciting and once progress is achieved, make it more challenging so the dog doesn’t become bored & learns new things, especially real life situations which are important for dogs to help them adapt and cope in a human world! 🌎🐶

Today was very hot so we stayed off the sidewalks (hot on the hand ~ hot on the paws!) and just had some shady yard time with some fun scent work and a small amount of flirting! Teaching Frankie to regulate her excitement, disengage from my squeaky flirt!, stop/go cues, stalk/crawl, drop on cue and ‘leave it!’

Great job Frankie…you rock girl! 👏🩷
Awesome job at your store Heather Nisbet (boss level - love it!) 😂❤️

Frankie is a smart little cookie and becoming very familiar with our training regime and is predicting my next moves before I give her cues, so I've had to include some unpredictability into our training! So she's not training me!! 😁
She is also doing great with her recalls and checking in without being prompted. 🙌🐕💨

Dogs are so in tune with us so it's important to remember that our tone of voice and our emotions can impact their own emotions, behavior and decision making. When you work with dogs this is something you are always aware of, which reminds you to stay calm in any situation and never panic! 🧘‍♀️

Frankie is doing so great at regulating her excitement level and it takes her less time to settle after being exposed to excitement or stimulation. I am also mindful of what Frankie’s triggers are so I can avoid adding to her threshold limit, which will increase over time as she becomes more confident. 🐕

Frankie visited Home Depot where she calmly greeted several customers. However, the staff kept a respectful distance away from Frankie and instead offered verbal greetings only. (Staff are not permitted to touch or approach dogs, which I think is sensible and respectful!!). 🤗🎉

👉Why you might ask??
Approaching a dog you do not know without them inviting you into their space puts pressure on that dog making them feel threatened, stressed, somewhat overwhelmed, nervous, fearful and potentially defensive! [Highly socially confident dogs ‘invite’ unfamiliar dogs into their space before the approach and also respect a dog’s personal space if avoidance or displacement cues are displayed]. You are actually being respectful to a dog if you do not approach, making a dog feel less threatened or stressed.

A big shoutout to Home Depot for putting this practice in place at your store! 👍👏❤️

After a low distraction walk where Frankie greeted some humans and an excited dog that entered her space without first asking, which she handled brilliantly! We then visited Frankie’s moms store where on entering, Frankie went right to her ‘place’ without any prompting from either of us! She's understanding where she needs to go when the shop gets busy, but also comes out to greet customers in a calm manner when appropriate to do so. 👋💬

Frankie also attended a ‘Buddy Walk’ with my neighbor’s sweet Golden Retriever, Jackson and his mom, who Frankie has met before on a few occasions. It was a warm day, so we took the dogs to an off leash park for a shady walk and some water play. Both dogs had a lot of fun! 🤩💦

One of the many things I love about dogs is their funny sense of humour and I’m learning that Frankie is quite the comedian!! [This tells me that she’s feeling very relaxed in my company]. 🤡😂

Good girl Frankie, you are doing fantastic! 👏🩷

Here's Frankie hanging out with us enjoying a boxed smorgasbord for some enrichment time.

Neither Frankie or Benny have any resource guarding issues, but it's still important to separate dogs when they are eating (this also includes dogs living in the same household) to avoid any potential for resource guarding behavior issues, any anxiety, frustration or stress developing if dogs get too close to each other around resources.

It's also respectful to both dogs not being in close proximity to one another whilst eating, whether it's chew toys, food, treats, a bone and even resting or sleeping.

[When we are eating at home our dog, Benny never approaches us when we have food. If I look at him when I'm eating, he then looks away. This is a sign of respect].

‼️Note: if using egg cartons make sure it's not styrofoam, which dogs shouldn't ingest! Paper/card is okay providing it's not plastered in colored inks, which are toxic to dogs in large amounts! ‼️

Frankie is starting to feel more settled in her new home. 🏡
She is more relaxed on walks in her neighborhood & enjoys spending some time in her new backyard, where Frankie enjoys rolling in the grass & finding sticks! 😵‍💫🪵

We visited a fun park where Frankie watched fish swimming in a pond, a squirrel race up a tree! She did some climbing, as well as some fun training in the shade. Frankie also greeted some people, she’s so nosey and just loves saying “Hi” to people! 👋🐕

The past couple of days have been quite warm, and as today was my last day with Frankie this week, I decided to take Frankie to a beach to cool off (and help Frankie with her wave obsession! 🌊😁), along with Benny (the beach has always been his happy place!). They both had a paddle in the rock pools and did lots of sniffing & air scenting. On the way back we stopped off for ice cream at a farm shop to end the day with a cold treat. 🍦😋

Great job Frankie!👏🩷

Frankie has been a trooper this week during her pawrents house move! Not only is moving stressful for the humans, it’s also stressful for our dogs as their routine changes, meal times may vary, their possessions get packed up, dogs may be left alone for longer periods, sleep pattern can change, etc. Frankie’s pawrents have worked so hard to ensure an easy transition for Frankie to her new home. Frankie now has a huge yard to play in, which she didn’t have before so I’m sure once things settle down, she's going to enjoy the benefits of the move! 🤩🏠

Frankie also hung out with us for half the day on Sunday while her pawrents were moving some items to their new home. She enjoyed a long walk and later that evening she dined at ‘Chez Julie’s!’ I’m sure the dogs that boarded with us in the past still remember their fine dining experience! 😁🍽🥩

Frankie hasn’t exhibited as much stress as I would have expected on our walks, but her pawrents have obviously noticed more going on at home, which is not surprising. I did adapt Frankie’s training walks last week and this week to ensure I wasn’t adding to her already elevated stress level. 🥴

Frankie attended a parallel walk with my neighbor's dog, Jackson, who Frankie has met before. Both of them get along and had some off leash time in my yard after a short walk and a water break. It was a hot day, so the walk was kept to a minimum to reduce any added stress caused by the heat. Dogs with short muzzles (brachycephalic breeds) are less able to tolerate the heat and are prone to overheating! 🥵

I also took Frankie on a walk around her new neighborhood so she could explore the new smells, sights & sounds, and to see if she required any help with anything unfamiliar whilst on our walk together. Apart from being a little unsure of a man driving a sit-on mower cutting his lawn (which she wanted to stop & observe), she was pretty relaxed in her new ‘hood!’. 🏡

It was hot again today so after a short walk, Frankie & I hung out in her shady backyard doing some fun training, playing ‘treat tree!’ & some scent work to keep Frankie from overheating in the full sun! ☀️🌡

Frankie also carried out her ‘weekly shop training session’ at her mom’s store. She’s been a little stressed with the house move (understandably), which will impact her behavior, like today, when she was ignoring her mom! [It’s worth remembering that training isn’t linear at the start and sometimes dogs may revert a little, especially during stressful times, so it’s important to remain patient, calm and be consistent. Things will settle down and you will achieve your’s and your dog’s goals. Hang in there! 🫶].

Frankie greeted several dogs at the off leash dog park and played with two of them; one of which was the size of a pony! (Mastiff mix). He had a goofy, sweet nature and Frankie seemed very smitten! 😍

Frankie you are doing awesome! 👏🩷

CRAZY DOG LADY ALERT!!! 🙉😂 (I recommend you turn down your volume!) 🗣

Here is Frankie going into water deeper than she's ever ventured before! I was attempting to give her some extra encouragement to cheer her on in the hopes that she would swim out after her stick! Almost!!

Frankie has always been curious around water, so I know once she feels confident enough to venture in further by herself, she'll enjoy swimming or paddling!

Franchie's are not naturally good swimmers due to their short legs & short muzzles, but I do know breeds with short muzzles who enjoy swimming and are very good at it! So it depends on the dog and their experiences around water.

It's important to note; You should NEVER force your dog into water, especially deep water! This can create fear and anxiety making them avoid water altogether. Seeing their buddies swimming on a hot day and having fun, can often be the encouragement they need to try it out. Dogs do mimic other dogs.

Frankie did follow a few dogs into the water today to play with them and fetch sticks. It's about creating positive associations for your dog in any experience.

Great job Frankie!! 👍💦

This week one of Frankie's pawrents joined us on a training walk. 🤗

Although I make training videos of dog(s) I'm working with to pass onto clients for their reference, this is just a small snapshot of what a dog does on our training walks together. It doesn't often capture what's going on around us or Frankie interacting with other dogs, etc. So I welcome and encourage it when clients can tag along on our walks, they learn so much! 📚🐶

Sometimes pet parents may see a ‘different’ side to their dog and may underestimate what their dog is actually capable of! At the same time, I also get to see ‘behaviors’ that I don’t experience when the client is not present! So it’s good for me (and them) to see both sides of their dog! 🐶↔️🐶

[It’s worth mentioning that your dog knows if you don’t trust them! In order to get trust, you also have to show trust!] 💯

I’ve spent enough time with Frankie to know how she’ll behave on walks and we’ve put in lots of recall & check-in practice, as well as dog-to-dog greetings, so I know I can trust her on our walks together. I will also redirect & steer Frankie away from those dogs who may not be the best fit for her. Greetings should always be a positive experience to help build Frankie’s confidence & social repertoire around other dogs. 💬🙌

Frankie still has a long line attached for now as she continues practicing recalls around distractions (even when a dog achieves 100% recall around distractions I will leave the long line attached for a while longer as a safety measure). It also allows me to grab the line if Frankie needs a break from play, or she needs help if more than one dog wants a sniff and she feels overwhelmed or unsure about the situation, or she decides to deviate from our path. 🐕🐩

Frankie met lots of people at the market in town this week & sat observing a band playing & small children racing about! Frankie is quite curious about young children! However, small children are unpredictable, fast moving, noisy and full of excitement! This type of energy can either make dogs nervous, excited, anxious or trigger predatory behaviors, so all dogs should be supervised around small children & vice-versa. 👶🏻🙉

Frankie greeted many people (she's a people magnet! 🧲) and several dogs on our walk around a lake. She also likes to watch the ducks & birds that gather there. She’s very respectful of them. 👀🦆🐦

Frankie also befriended a very sweet & typically vocal Husky named Levi. They had great fun playing & racing each other! Frankie even followed Levi into the lake to look for rocks! She went in a lot farther than she would normally venture in water! Obviously trying to impress Levi here! 😍💌

Frankie is doing awesome at her mom’s store and will actually go to her ‘place’ voluntarily. She is greeting customers more calmly and if she becomes overwhelmed (more than one or two customers saying ‘Hi’ at once with excited voices!), or she needs a break, then she’ll divert to her ‘place’, which is a bed just slightly hidden away to allow her some privacy, or to relax undisturbed (very important!). 😴🛏

You're making great progress Frankie! 🫶

Great job Frankie & pawrents…you got this! 👏🩷👏

Frankie has done FANTASTIC work this week! I’m seeing steady improvement around other dogs (less groin sniffing! ⛔️) and politely making brief eye contact and then moving to the ‘more appropriate & socially acceptable’ butt end to gain more info! 👃💭

Frankie is doing much better at controlling her excitement around people, keeping all four paws on the ground to get rewarded! I think Frankie finds this less challenging than the humans! Seeing a puppy or young dog often brings out our inner soft gooey side, triggering excitement for both human & dog! 🤩🫠

Frankie also attended a busy town walk with my boy, Benny who is desensitised to busy streets, traffic noise, people, dogs, etc. It helps having a more confident, socialised dog along to reassure Frankie & see his Mr. cool composure! 🧘🏻‍♂️ Frankie was a little anxious with all the noise & distractions, so we’ll be adding this type of exposure to her ‘training bucket list’ to work on. 🤗

Frankie has been doing so amazing with ‘checking in’ and ‘recalls’ this week. I felt confident enough to drop her long line at the ‘off leash’ trail.

Today got very warm and so I decided to take Frankie to a shady place with lakes so she could dip her toes to cool off and meet other off leash dogs.

We did have a couple of space invaders that suddenly appeared from nowhere! When this happens I’ll announce to the dog I’m working with…“Incoming” or “Who’s this?” so it doesn’t suddenly startle or surprise them! Some dogs are just plain rude, so I will use my body to ‘block’ them from approaching in this rushed manner, forcing them to apply their brakes and approach more politely! If they look defensive, posturing, aroused or overly excited, I’m not going to allow them to meet the dog in this manner! 🫸🐕💨

‼️It’s worth mentioning that in warm & hot temperatures small breeds, especially breeds with short muzzles/snouts (brachycephalic breeds) are more prone to respiratory problems due to being unable to regulate their body temperature. This makes them more susceptible to heatstroke in hot weather.
[Things that will help: Keep walks short (early am & late pm when cooler is best) - seek shade - give plenty of water - allow breaks to cool off - if your dog likes water, let them paddle - stay off asphalt, metal surfaces, sidewalks if hot to the touch!]. Check the temperature of the ground by placing your hand on it. If it’s hot on your hand, it’s too hot for their paws!‼️

Frankie finished off with a visit to her mom’s store, where she did really well and even went back to her ‘place’ after calmly greeting a few customers without any prompting!

Awesome job Frankie, you rock girl! 👏🩷✨️
