This beautiful video by client Henry is an excellent clip of what the scent activity 'sprinkles' should look like.
It isn't just throwing treats around and leaving your dog to frantically rush around trying to find them! Don't throw the treats around at all! ❌

The trick is in spreading the little bits of food when the dog isn't in view ✅ so they just walk out calmly and come across the food bit by bit. Henry is a busy minded dog and very easily excitable. But putting the food out this way has set him up to succeed in finding it a soothing calming sniffy activity.

Sprinkles is an excellent support activity for your dogs during this busy season. Give them a break from the busy festivities and make sure they have somewhere to sleep at all times undisturbed 🐾💜

MONDAY & TUESDAY DOG WALKING BEST BITS 🐾💜

Adam has had a lovely couple of days catching up with our dog walking dogs.

Shout out to newbie Ben who has been absolutely excellent taking it all in his stride and meeting new friends! A particularly joyful friendship was made with Molly so far 🥹

Shout out also to Goldie Lucy who has excelled so much in her social skill building she was even able to walk with mini Lucy today! Big Lucy is excellent with little dogs now. Such a star.

Finally, shout out to Bertie who did his first walk with just Adam. Not that he minded one bit. Adam is his favourite after all 😂

Enjoy these happy faces as always 🐾💜

One of the things I assess when working with anxious reactive dogs is how long it takes for them to recognise another dog as safe, friendly and feel able to interact (should they even want to). This tells me a lot about a dog's levels of optimism and resilience.

For 8 year old Honey she was one of the quickest I've watched go from avoidance and tension to PLAY. This is great news as it signifies great foundations from which we can grow some more confidence in interactions with dogs of all shapes, sizes and energy levels. This confidence will come from developing on social skills and practicing them so they're strong and she's able to handle better situations she is finding tricky.

So lovely to meet this little lady yesterday & with the help of Lily, bring joy to her and her mums face! 🐾💜

IMPORTANT BUSINESS UPDATES

Hi all,

Been a while since I've done a general business update post and when better to do it than when you're coming towards the end of a year and starting a brand new one!

There will be quite a big change in the new year to the business in that I'm stepping back from dog walking much more. Adam will be conquering that task solo, with the help of Amy a little. This does mean there will be no more Walking Wednesday 😓. I used to love Walking Wednesday as a way of breaking up a week of tough behaviour work but I just don't have time now to blank off an entire day for walking unfortunately. I'll miss it, I really will, but Wednesday will just be another typical dog walking day for Adam come the New Year. To reflect this of course the groups will be smaller but the dogs will still get time with friends and that's the main thing.

To the surprise of nobody who knows me... I'm going back into studying. I know what my next challenge is and I'm so looking forward to it. It's going to add so much to my behaviour work and although it's a huge undertaking, I'm ready for it 💪🏻

I will still see our dog walking dogs as I'll still be doing puppy socialisation walks and behaviour walks for my behaviour stars ⭐ and they often overlap! I'll also join Adam on any walks when I have the free time to, because my own dogs will miss the walks and play too!

Let me take this moment to express sincere gratitude to all dog walking clients for being with us this year and making it such an enjoyable job. We genuinely treasure every one of you and I'm looking forward to seeing you as and when my work takes me there in 2025!

Thanks for being wonderful and for making this a hard but necessary decision to take.

Lots of love,

Jen 🐾💜

"I wish the whole dog world was as nonjudgmental as you".

Me too.

When it comes to ethics and treating dogs kindly I will not waver. I resist the lures of "quick fixes" and "but negative consequences are everywhere" because to me being kind should be at the core of it all, to both ends of the lead.

But I've been in judgemental circles and cutting myself out of them was the best thing I did. I literally see every dog as the individual they are. I don't judge little dogs as personality disordered with body dysmorphia. I don't judge bull breeds as fighters who need to bite. I don't judge big breeds as needing a man's approach to stop them taking over the house.

I don't judge the fact that desperate times can lead you to desperate measures. I don't judge your past choices or even your current ones. I don't judge 'mistakes" made. Just the word "mistake" is a judgement when in reality it is all just an attempt to get it right.

This doesn't mean I don't have boundaries and ideals. But an environment where you're worried about getting it wrong because of emotional consequences is exactly why I'm against aversive training. That air ruins relationships. Especially when it's not just emotional consequences but physical too.

I deal with a lot of dogs with such a wide variety of difficulties, and on top of that, a wide variety of people too. I know what it feels like to be judged as inadequate, like your relationship with your dog is "wrong", like you are being watched and ridiculed.

My clients bask in a feeling of acceptance and in my opinion we just don't give each other that enough anymore. Person to person, and person to dog. Our dogs spend no second of their life trying to change who we are. We love that and we cry about that when its gone.

Nonjudgmental acceptance is a gift when it should be a given. It's a foundation from which so much can grow. You can't judge a plant into flowering.

A big Calvert Canines welcome to the gorgeous Ben! 💜💜

Ben has joined us for dog walking to make some friends and go on some super fun adventures. And what a fun lad he is! You'd have no idea he's an older boy! Love the terrier souls.

Today he had his first adventure making friends with our very own Lily and getting a taste for what our walks are about. He had an absolute blast.

Huge welcome in Ben. Lots more friends for you to meet next week 🐾💜

DOG WALKING BEST BITS FOR THE WEEK 🐾💜

Do have a scroll through, some lovely moments this week.

Unfortunately we are losing a couple of dogs after Christmas which is going to be a great loss as they're such valued members 😭

We have a new face joining us from tomorrow though and we can probably take just 1 more dog after the new year - so get in touch if we can help! [email protected]

Have a great weekend all,

Team CC 🐾💜

The face of a boy who smashed his dog-dog session right out of the park. Another young one who is learning to control his own emotions. Absolutely rocked at it today. From distance to "go say hi" in one session - absolute star ⭐ 🐾💜

SOME WOUNDS ARE JUST NOT "FIXABLE"

Nobody would have guessed out of all the trees around, it would be this big strong tree that tore right at the base and fell. Some weathers are just too extreme and you're right in the firing line of it. It's not about weakness or disease, a matter of blame. It's just a fact of life, traumatic experiences can rip you through your core and you may never stand tall again.

It is not a failing to respect the fallen tree and let it rest. Let it be who he now is. Nobody asks a fallen tree to just stand back up and sometimes animal traumas are just as severe.

Imagine your dog spent their entire socialisation period in a concrete kennel - that's severe trauma.

Imagine your dog feared for his life in a dog attack - that's severe trauma.

Imagine your dog gets lost on fireworks night - that's severe trauma.

These are all fallen trees that cannot be "fixed" with all the will in the world.

It is not failing to let your fallen tree rest and stop pushing for higher expectations with every week that passes. "That was ages ago, isn't s/he over it by now?". Some animals NEVER "get over it". They fall and they can't just get back up as if it never happened.

Fallen trees can be beautiful too. They show us a different perspective, often one that could be just as valuable, if not more so, than our own 🐾💜
