Everyone say hello to Otto who had his final session out for his five package training program with Kelly.

Owner concerns: Recall, Biting/ Nipping, Basic manners, Leash manners, Human reactivity

Where we started: mom's life had become unmanageable! After realizing she got him from a less than reputable breeder as both his brother, with another family member, and others from his letter all displayed at fear reactivity from a very young age, she started trying to get help.
After three other trainers and little to no success, she reached out to us.
Mom had lost all confidence in herself especially when going outside as Otto was so vocal in his reactivity to almost everything. She was embarrassed, ashamed and had lost all faith in herself of being a good dog mom.
At the initial assessment, when I took the leash his entire demeanor changed; He calmed down quickly and I was able to bring out several dogs for him to engage with very little issue. I knew right then and there that a huge source of their problems was a toxic pattern that had formed over time.

What we did: starting inside the home, which was one of their core issues as he would go crazy barking the entire time anyone came in the house. We instilled more crate time, less freedom and protocols for when people came over. We then practiced what a foundational walk should look like with low to no triggers, requesting and commanding respect and attention and rewarding good behavior while removing him when he got overthreshold.
I then started bringing out dogs for her to gain experience in therefore confidence in his socialization - Because if you see it, you can believe it!

How it's going: for the last session we took a walk along the White Rock promenade, and while it was fairly empty due to the weather, we still came across a lot of triggers that would have set him off previously. I walked Polly alongside them as an additional distraction / trigger.
At the end we switched his 2.25 mm prong collar down to a 1.25mm which was so much better for control and communication with a very minimal physical pressure.

Stay tuned: Mom will be doing touch-up sessions in 2025 to keep her confidence up!

Mousepig and mom had their best pack walk to date today!

Owner concerns: Dog reactivity, Basic manners, Obedience, Recall, Socialization

I have been working with Mousepig and his mom for 2 years come January and as many know, I am always the one that takes care of him when they go out of town. Anybody that watches my stories knows that he does absolutely fabulous in my care, we go to dog parks, he meets dogs all day everyday without issue... But when Mom comes back home he switches into a little devil dog 😈

While we changed up equipment, to a prong and e-collar, to give Mom better control and communication with him especially in times near or over threshold, we still focus our sessions on creating controlled environments for mom to build experience and therefore confidence.

The last three sessions have been at Dogwood off-leash dog park where he stays on leash and mom practices interruption, distraction and body blocking skills while utilizing her tools in moments of chaos. We always have out and least two of his friends; Cooper and Bogey and today also Robert James which prevent unbalanced dogs from running up on them.

Today was an absolutely fantastic perfect day! We started by doing a lap with his new good buddy along with Cooper, Bogey and Robert while the park was a bit quieter and more calm.
The second lap we had Rubs mom walk Ryka while we had off leash. At that point there was definitely a dynamic shift at the park and there was a lot of chaos which they navigated perfectly and beautifully 🤌

Mom left so happy and confident and we know we will continue helping build her confidence in 2025 to make it the best year for her and MousePig 🐾

Reminder!

I may just repost this every 6 months or so as it seems there are some people that forget...and also, we don't care about your uneducated opinion of our dogs collar.

Have the day you deserve! 🙃

Everyone say hello again to Pebbles who had her second official training session out of her three e-collar package with Kelly.

Owner concerns: Dog reactivity, Leash manners, Biting/ Nipping

How it started: Pebbles had been an off-leash dog for some time but after a handful of incidents mom had lost her confidence.
Inside the home Pebbles was very protective, which is absolutely a breed trait being being a Mixed ( Great Pyrenees / Australian cattle dog ).

What we did: We started in the home by conditioning the e-collar to known commands in a low to no stimulation environment. She took to it extremely well and it was especially helpful when she had a tendency to focus on things outside the window.

How it's going: Today we went back to the scene of the crime, her favorite off-leash trail where she had not always made the best decisions recently. We wanted to pair the e-collar with a recall command and interrupting loading behaviors.
It was exceptionally busy today and she and her mom did amazing! Mom did point out that she was extremely confident because we were there, but it showed her how much that affects Pebbles.

Stay tuned: Mom will be working more consistently on the e-collar both inside and out so we can push them even further out of their comfort zone for their final session.

Everyone say hello again to Lenny who had his final session out of his five package training program with Kelly this afternoon.

Owner concerns: Human reactivity, Dog reactivity, Recall, Socialization, nipping/biting (with intention to cause harm)

Where we started: a recent arrival from China with an unknown past, Lenny was given too much freedom to quickly and brought his street dog traits out. He would resource guard things in his home, even from family. Walks were a nightmare as he would react to almost anything moving and was hard to handle due to his size and walking equipment. He was starting fights with his new dog siblings. He was protective of mom and when he didn't like someone, he would use his mouth to say so.

What we did: to call Lenny's family dedicated to his training would be an understatement. They did a mixed package first, working with all the trainers at the Pack. Next they did a package with one trainer to add the e-collar into their toolbox before moving to a pack walk package with Kelly to create controlled environments to practice all their new skills, tools and techniques in different places.

How it's going: today we met at Dogwood off leash dog park again to mix dogs he knew and dogs he didn't. Watch and intervene if needed and be proactive - body blocking and removing him out of situations we knew he wouldn't make the right choices in - remember a part of training is always management!

Final words: the difference in his parents and their confidence is like night and day. The see micro loading cues so quickly they missed before. They mastered their tools and know when to use what and how in order to effectively control and communicate with him. They created rules, boundaries and structure in the home which in time expanded his world more. We could not be more proud and know this isn't goodbye, but see you later instead 👋

Did we forgot to tell you?

RE*****ON IS ADOPTED!!

After four long years; two with a rescue that gave up on him, followed by us taking ownership and then a year working hard on his training, he is forever home.

With who you may ask? His OG fosters 💜

Remy's intense human and dog reactivity had isolated then all from living. Walks were a nightmare in their saturated and bustling neighborhood and they struggled to control him, let alone calm him. By the time we started working with them, they hadn't been on vacation in almost two years and never got to socialize in their home anymore. He was not a good fit.
We vowed to help him "adoptable" and worked diligently exploring all avenues, tools and techniques so he could start to enjoy the world.

The biggest change happened when we introduced the e-collar. Slow and steady we built this into his training program as a key component of communication and interruption of his chaotic mind.

Everything they couldn't do before was now possible! Walks with family and their dogs, friends coming to visit, car and ferry rides, walking down the busy streets of Chinatown with no concern for all the triggers that used to set him off. He was officially LIVING and loving it! It was then they knew, he had always been home ❤️

Mom and dad are now good friends of ours, Re*****on is a part of our family and we will always be his babysitter whenever they go away - so this won't be the last time you see this cute face.

Used often, rarely understood.

The word AVERSIVE is thrown around constantly in dog training, so let's have a conversation on what it means.

DEFINE AVERSIVE

Let's start with the fact that 9/10 of you had to google it.

Next, what's the definition?

Don't let this tiny stature fool you, Gizmo here is ready and happy to f**k start your face 😁 This little man had his initial assessment with Kelly this morning.

Owner concerns: Human reactivity, Dog reactivity, Biting/ Nipping

Assessment finds: Gizmo is afraid, and as many small dogs do, he acts super tough to keep people and other dogs away.
He was always a timid dog but after an unfortunate incident at the dog park he became insanely triggered by people and other dogs especially in and around his home.
Unfortunately him and his mom got stuck in a toxic cycle of codependency which was only exacerbated when they got his sister Lola. Separately they aren't totally horrible but together they cosign each other's bad behavior and magnify their reactivity.
Gizmo likes to redirect on his mom's pant legs and occasionally his little human brother, although he's never landed a solid bite if we don't nip this in the bud there will be one down the line.
He has little to no handler respect or relevancy, and his entire walk is spent scanning the area and acting like he runs the place.
When I brought out Cooper he was definitely very interested but also fearful and his production didn't scare Cooper but it didn't make him interested in saying hello. It has been several years since he met a new dog.
It was no coincidence that as soon as I took the leash his entire demeanor changed, with no reactivity until Mom came back into the picture.
Mom would like to be able to have people in the house again and enjoy going for walks with both of her dogs, perhaps even doing some light socialization with humans and other dogs.

Our prescription: Five package training program is going to set a good foundation for everyone and build experience and confidence in mom which will help diminish the fear in Gizmo.

Stay tuned!

"Prong collars are dangerous because they cause damage and injuries to dogs"

WHERE?

I just googled it, but then instead of just sitting there and looking at the pictures, I dug into each one to find the source and the story behind it. What did I find? A handful of idiots leaving equipment on 24/7 but even when that was done there were more injuries from harnesses than anything.

A prong collar is considered the least dangerous option of anything around your dogs neck, even when used incorrectly, compared to other types of collars because the pressure distribution on the dog's neck is designed to be less constricting, minimizing the risk of choking or serious injury, even when applied too forcefully.

If this tool is causing so much damage to dogs, where is the proof? The archives of animal control investigations, the albums at vets offices, the lists on PETA and SPCA sites...nowhere? Why is that?

Go ahead, Google it. Search.

Dog Name: Bailey! A little over one year old. Training session with Jinx. Combo package with Kelly.

Owner Concerns: Socialization, dog reactivity (excitement based)

Brief Assessment: Bailey is a very excitable girl who was geared up on a halti and harness system and I completely under why with her jumpiness when excited. She’s only a little over a year old so is turning into her adolescence now. After talking with her parents, we did hook her up to a double connector leash and a 2.35 Herm Springer prong to have a bit more control and communication with her. Bailey was doing decently on the halti, but the pressure needed to correct or stop her was heavy handed, so I wanted to try a different approach. Bailey did let us know she is averse to change but with some patience, she settled into the prong. We brought out Ellie and Huey individually and worked at quite a far distance to try and keep Bailey under threshold. It’s something to note that we also started this session in a park right beside a fenced off-leash dog park which made things very difficult for Bailey to work through all the big emotions at a distance. We got a few really good reps in and ended on a good note.

Our Prescription: Practice engagement with handler! We went over marker words, clickers and protocol to have Bailey under threshold and what to do if she’s already hit her limit. We brought out the e collar to talk about it and I have suggested it for a future endeavour if they ever felt comfortable with it. Currently, Bailey is doing no off leash activities which is what we want anyways. Stay tuned for her progress!

Dog Name: Minnie! 8 months old and training session with Jinx.

Owner Concerns: Puppy obedience, manners, separation anxiety

Brief Assessment: Minnie has improved a ton with walking since we’ve swapped her from a harness to her 2.25 Herm Springer prong. She has been going through a bit of potty training regression which tends to be pretty typical for around this age, so after we sorted out a few tips for that, we got right into it. Mom has an eye on this page so she’s quite familiar with the e collar in theory, so I got her to feel everything before we suited up Minnie. Minnie is super clever and took to it like a moth to a flame. We did a few exercises in house to reach her what the digital leash is and how to pair pressure with stim before taking it outside. Currently, we want to put our focus on house manners and walking with the e collar.

Our Prescription: Practice! There will be a ton of practice for mom to just work out when to stim and for what scenarios. We’re also sticking to that Minnie doesn’t need to say hello to every person or dog either. Stay tuned for her progress!

Sharing more good things I have found recently!

Tummy Tamer, made in house by the staff at Bosley's Tsawwassen, is AMAZING and has evened out my whole pack. Some dogs are too soft, some to form, some too dry, some too moist, some too stinky....this has made everyone 💩🤌

I get it at Tsawwassen Bosley's and a great price of $10 per mason jar.

I'm thinking of carrying some with me to sell to clients not close to Delta, would you be interested?

Would you like to try Tummy Tamer?

How Kelly became the Crazy Dog Lady

Kelly has always had a love for dogs, and grew up in a household where she had four that were her best friends. After she graduated with a biochemistry degree from California State University at Fullerton, she moved to Washington state where her love for pitbulls began. She started PB and Chi Dog Rescue Society in 2012 and worked hands on with over 500 dogs and felt rescue dogs was her true calling. Seeing the issues the dogs coming out of the shelters had, she got her certification in dog training and started working hands on with the reactive and unsocialized ones in particular as there was so little training willing and able of working with them. Through the course of her rescue and training experience, she built a pack of her own dogs that she worked diligently to balance and work together in harmony. She now uses her own skills, along with those of her ten pack, to help dogs and families all over the lower mainland to find their family harmony too. She always says “whatever your issue, I have a dog for that!”
