Everyone say hello again to Stanley who had another training session with Kelly.

Owner concerns: Dog reactivity, Socialization, Aggression (has the intention to harm), Leash manners

Where we started: When Stanley and mom came to us she could barely walk him. She was using a harness and it gave her little to no control of him especially when he was at or over threshold. She had an e-collar from a previous training program but was using it very limitedly.
Inside the home there was little to no structure and no consequences for lack of compliance to rules.

What we did: First we set up more structure in the home practicing more place commands, solid recall inside the home and yard and more clear and consistent leadership.
We then opened up the e-collar usage for more basic obedience stuff and added a prong collar for walks.

How it's going: for our session we focused on creating more controlled scenarios with other dogs for mom to practice her tools and techniques. As I brought out a variety of dogs and temperaments, mom polished up her e-collar timing and levels, pairing that with luring, redirection and honoring thresholds.
After working with Yodi, Jimmy Dean sausage, and Ferris on leashes passes, we then did a fun off leash organic walk with Cooper and Bogey.
We ended the session with bringing dogs out in front of her home as mom practiced using the ecollar for yard recall as he is reactive at the fence line.

Stay tuned: next session we will be going to a more saturated area to practice in.

Dog Name: Tank! 13 months old and a Bernedoodle! Initial assessment with Jinx.

Owner Concerns: Leash manners, Basic manners, Obedience

Brief Assessment: Tank is a clever girl and Jinx have been contacted to specifically help out with service dog training. Tank has had a great start and a mom who has been dedicated from the start. Tank had a brief stint at a doggy daycare and at this age it’s made her a little sloppy with her cues and compliance to work. She has a great foundation and a temperament (resilient, willing to learn/cooperate and has a drive to follow through) that is suited for us to help out to get her through her test and certified.

Our Prescription: We polished up a few cues and renamed a few commands. Mom will be getting Tank a vest and we will do the next session as a public access test.

Dog Name: Minnie! 7 month old, Mini Goldendoodle. Initial assessment with Jinx.

Owner Concerns: Human reactivity, Dog reactivity, Leash manners, Basic manners, Obedience, Recall

Brief Assessment: Minnie is a little ball of energy that wants a boat load of attention, kind of like Tinkerbell! Her wanting attention does translate into a bit of whining and jumping that mom isn’t too thrilled with. Minnie is quite clever and does know a decent amount of obedience cues and mainly needs help on her excitability. She’s quite young and does have a babysitter that loves her a little bit too much and that’s feeding into some undesirable manners and behaviors. Minnie has a slight case of separation anxiety as well.

Our Prescription: Minnie is crate trained and otherwise a very charming dog that is quick to learn and while she is pushy in her own way, is actually quite compliant when working. Stay tuned for her progress!

Dog Name: Lily, Daschund/Corgi/Golden mix. 5 year old rescue. Initial assessment with Jinx.

Owner Concerns: Dog reactivity, Leash manners, Separation anxiety, Obedience, Socialization, Biting/ Nipping

Brief Assessment: Lily is very good in the house and mom really wants to focus on her dog reactivity in general. She can be a little possessive of things, places and people that are hers but is generally pretty good with direction when she is given it. We fitted her martingale appropriately and went outside. We brought along Turnip, Ellie and Huey to the session. Going over the YES marker and when to reward for engagement we brought out the dogs one by one. Lily is a clever girl and had minimal to no tantrums. Mom was utterly surprised at the change in well fitting equipment and a change in firmer leadership could do for her and Lily.

Our Prescription: They’ll be doing structured walks to get a handle on Lily’s behavior before moving forward. Stay tuned for progress!

Everybody say hello again to Coca, far right, who had her final session out of her e-collar program with Kelly this afternoon.

Owner concerns: Basic manners, Recall, Socialization

How it started: Coca Is Dad's first dog ever and he decided to challenge himself by getting a physically and emotionally traumatized Korean street dog - bless his heart 💜 She came with some pretty solid foundational anxiety which was exacerbated by the fact that he lives right in the heart of downtown Vancouver's east side. He was struggling to walk her had no idea how to introduce her to other dogs and people and was terrified she would get off leash because she was such a flight risk.

What we did: thankfully the first work I got to do with her was when she came to stay with me while Dad went out of town. This gave me the opportunity to try out a variety of different equipment and techniques to see what she was most responsive to. We ended up on a prong collar and she responded so wonderfully to the e-collar that I knew I wanted to add it into her program. Other dogs were the key to her confidence so we set up several sessions walking through her saturated neighborhood with her confident dog buddies showing her that there was nothing to be afraid of.

How it's going: today we finished the program with the dream the dad had always wanted, which was her off-leash at their local dog beach. As Dad had mastered his dogtra e-collar, recall was immaculate. Their relationship was so strong and trusting that if she got nervous at all about the other dogs or people, she would come running to Dad who would reward and console her.
I think what I was most impressed with is the under socialized, insecure little girl had grown into a lady that had no issue standing up for herself when Arlow and F***g pushed her too far. They had a wonderful and completely appropriate dog conversation that dissipated on its own and everyone went right back to having fun.

What's next: once a part of the pack, always a part of the pack. They have come out to a few of our pack walks and we hope that Dad would allow us to watch her if he went out of town. This isn't goodbye, it's I'll see you later 👋

Everybody say hello again to Henry who had his first official training session out of his five package program with Kelly this morning.

Owner concerns: Human reactivity, Dog reactivity, Biting/ Nipping

How it started: at the initial assessment Henry had strong feelings in both directions, starting with fear of both myself and other dogs moving into excitement and out of control affection. It is quite common for a under socialized and fearful dog to bounce back and forth between the extremes. Mom had already gotten the help of several trainers and he is also on pharmaceutical medications but her life was still being dramatically affected negatively by Henry and his reactivity.

What we are doing: I knew for our first session that I wanted to try out some different equipment and Mom said she had already tried a martingale and was currently using a harness, which was giving her little to no control or communication. She had used a prong collar on her previous dog and I felt that would be a great tool especially for a nervous herding breed.
With the new tool giving mom calm confidence in handling him, while he was given clear communication, we were able to walk through Steveston which was not possible previously. Mom was almost in tears.

Stay tuned: mom's homework would be getting more comfortable with the use of the tool especially using it a bit lighter than she had previously. We are always positively reinforcing the good behavior so I asked her to engage with him like a cheerleader when he was doing well in situations that would previously trigger him. Next session we are going to be doing some e-collar conditioning in and around the home.

WE FOUND ANU!!

Well mom did 😉

As soon as she got back to town, she came to our house (where he was lost from) and started calling his name. Almost immediately he started barking saying MOM I'M HERE!!
Where was he?!
BACK IN MY YARD!!
Did he leave and come back? We don't know.
Did he stay hidden somewhere in the yard? While that is a possibility, I have motion sensing cameras and multiple dogs were in the yard and never found him so I find it hard to believe BUT...

I don't care where he was because he's back with mom safe and sound with not a scratch on him.

Words cannot express the gratitude from the Pack and his family the way that this community came together to help him. Each and every one of you that interacted with post, shared his story, went looking for him we wish we could give each of you a hug. THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!

I've barely eaten or slept in the last 2 days so I'm going to have a beer, go to bed early and probably sleep like I'm in a coma.

Again to everyone, words cannot express the gratitude that we have for all of your support while he was lost. We love our cross border community 🇨🇦🐾🇺🇲♥️

Everyone say hello again to Kilo who had his third session out of his five package training program with Kelly.

Owner concerns: Dog reactivity, Leash manners, Recall, Socialization

How it started: Kilo Is a very typical Dogo Argentino and is protective of his home and family. They had previously seen a very correction-based trainer, which had them utilizing a prong and e-collar very heavy. If you know the breed, you know that being too assertive and dominant with them can actually create the opposite of effect, which is what happened to a certain extent. They were using extremely high levels on the e-collar and he was just powering through them, the same with the prong collar.

What we did: The first thing I wanted to do is to teach them alternative techniques to the use of their tools, like body blocking, redirecting, and most importantly honoring threshold. I wanted to add more positivity and praise to his program, but also very clear rules and boundaries. We reconditioned the e-collar at lower levels and used it for more obedience and interruption than correction.

How it's going: today we practice meeting myself and another human outside before not having a complete meltdown when we came inside. He didn't quite well with the other human but was still highly focused on me, which I expected because I give off a very different energy and he continually is testing me, which is a very dogo trait. We then went outside and did a little pack walk with Dad walking Jimmy Dean sausage, the family friend walking F***g and myself walking Yodi has Mom stayed in the middle of the pack being calm and confident. It was of course that moment that several other neighborhood dogs came out which gave us the opportunity to practice counter flow passing.

Stay tuned: next session we are going to be doing the same but with me taking the leash at the halfway mark as him and I need to start becoming friends so he can board with me when the family decides to go on vacations.

Everybody say hello again to Boone who had another training session out of his five package with Kelly this morning.
* Last post about him mom said he look like a mushroom so I made sure to take a super cute picture this time 😍

Owner concerns: Human reactivity, Leash manners, Dog reactivity, Basic manners, Biting/ Nipping, Recall

How it started: Boone has a tendency to get strong feelings, excitement with new people and anxiety with new dogs. Due to a lack of structure, rules, boundaries and leadership, he was doing what he felt was right without any direction or consequences. Their tools were not helping control or communicate with him and several times he got away from his handler and made not good choices.

What we did: First we switched him over to a 3.2 mm Herm Sprenger prong collar which was a game changer for his mom, who has a knee injury, and his grandma to feel more confident in controlling and communicating with him.
We then worked on the foundation of a walk, and while he is a slow and mellow guy, he was able to do what he wanted, when he wanted which rolled into sometimes him wanting to bark and lunge at dogs and people. We set a foundation for leash manners and then brought out some minor triggers to practice.

How it's going: one of the things that they are struggling with is household consistency. As there are several people involved in his care, not everybody is a part of the training program or following all of the standards. Remember it is extremely important, if not the most important thing, for a dog to have consistency in their training.
Today we push the boundary a bit by bringing out several dogs at once and practicing neutrality walking up and down the road with them. Even if he's behaving appropriately, it doesn't mean he gets to meet a dog every time and that is a great foundation for true socialization which is ignoring.

Stay tuned: next session we're going to go to a more saturated area, most likely Munday park.

Uneducated opinions not welcomed 😊

If you have used an e-collar properly on your dog, we welcome your feedback based on experience.

If you've experienced the sensation of an e-collar, we are happy you were open-minded and would welcome your opinion of how it felt for YOU, but you still have no proficiency on how to use it on a dog so keep that in mind when having a discussion.

If you've never worked with a dog using an e-collar, or even experienced the sensation, you shouldn't be speaking about it. Period.

We are always happy to have a discussion or debate with those who have knowledge on the subjects that they are speaking of, but what we won't engage with is ultracrepidarians speaking about tools and techniques they know nothing about because that is just downright insolent.

Listen. Learn. Form an opinion. THEN speak.

Have you ever experienced an e-collar sensation?

Everybody say hello again to Charlie who had his first official training session out of his five package program with Kelly this afternoon.

Owner concerns: Dog reactivity, Socialization, Leash manners

Assessment finds: Mom had been very proactive on his training seeing a number of trainers before us, both balanced and positive only. There is a nice foundation set already but we definitely need to Titan and polish up some behaviors - mainly focusing on socialization with dogs and people where he gets strong feelings. She came into the program with an e-collar, but was using it very limitedly.

Our prescription: for our first session we always start inside, and today her partners two wild Boston Terriers were at the apartment also which was good to see the chaos that ensues when all of them are together.
As I had not seen them in a few months we started with a little catching up before jumping into using the e-collar in the home as a magnifier of commands, particularly the place command when he gets excited. We went through a couple of repetitions of door desensitization and a human being in the home with him remaining on his place.

Stay tuned: next session is in a little over a week and we will start with me coming into the apartment and her getting a calm place day that she will be practicing over the next week before moving outside and using the e-collar as an interrupter around triggers.

Everybody say hello again to Bailey who had her third session out of her five package program with Kelly this afternoon.

Owner concerns: Human reactivity, Leash manners, Recall, Biting/ Nipping, Dog reactivity

How it started: Bailey is foundationally a really good girl. She simply lacks impulse control so when she gets super excited to be around dogs or a bit too anxious around new people, it can be dramatic.

What we did: They were successful using a Halti brand halti, which is our favorite brand of face halti, and it was working great for them so we did not do an equipment switch Because if it ain't broke don't fix it!
For our first session we focused on neutral behavior around new dogs in a stimulating environment and our second session we worked in home creating more structure, especially create time and desensitization to the doorbell plus human arrival protocols.

How it's going: today we met at Edgewater campground and Derby reach where we started our e-collar conditioning. Thankfully it was totally dead so we started with the basics using it for heel and checking in plus interrupting excitement. We brought out Skye and Scrappy followed by Diego and F***g as proximity triggers.
We did the last 15 minutes in the off leash area where we practiced recall especially when she was excited playing with other off-leash dogs like Cooper and Arlow.

Stay tuned: next session we are going to do half inside applying the e-collar to obedience and structure and then doing some more off-leash communication.

How Kelly became the Crazy Dog Lady

Kelly has always had a love for dogs, and grew up in a household where she had four that were her best friends. After she graduated with a biochemistry degree from California State University at Fullerton, she moved to Washington state where her love for pitbulls began. She started PB and Chi Dog Rescue Society in 2012 and worked hands on with over 500 dogs and felt rescue dogs was her true calling. Seeing the issues the dogs coming out of the shelters had, she got her certification in dog training and started working hands on with the reactive and unsocialized ones in particular as there was so little training willing and able of working with them. Through the course of her rescue and training experience, she built a pack of her own dogs that she worked diligently to balance and work together in harmony. She now uses her own skills, along with those of her ten pack, to help dogs and families all over the lower mainland to find their family harmony too. She always says “whatever your issue, I have a dog for that!”
