Rescue Dogs Responsibly Mission is to help dog adopters choose a nice pet dog, help dog rescuers and fosters to rehabilitate dogs Many dog rescues are excellent, but some are not.

This page is a free service to help dog adopters pick a nice family pet and solve common behavior issues with their dogs. I have been a dog rescuer and rehabilitator since 2009 with experience in fostering dogs, rescuing, matchmaking, evaluating and training. I have mentored under some of the best trainers in the USA. Unfortunately, dog rescue can be a buyer beware market for unsuspecting dog ado

pters. I wanted to help families and people find and adopt a nice safe family dog so I made a website to educate the dog adopter. I also welcome inquiries from dog rescues wanting to improve their dog choices and dog adoption methods.

So I can inform everyone best, I am consolidating my pages, Fearful Feral Dog Task Force and Rescue Dogs Responsibly, to my Business Page, Hart to Heart Canine Training, LLC. This way I only have to keep up with posts on one page, and I feel I can do this better if it's in one place. I will be posting plenty of fearful and feral dog training and rehab, plus dog rescue info, on this page. I hope you will follow and join me. https://www.facebook.com/hart2heartcanine

Body language works with horses too. When I stopped to take some photos the horses started getting too close for comfort (I think people feed them from their hands thus endangering themselves and the horses). They very much understand when I change my energy and stand upright and ask them to stop approaching me. It is something I am interested in experimenting with. And in case anyone wants to caution me about safety thanks for your concern but my car is right behind me with an open door

Balance. Ex-Feral free roaming dogs have it. They naturally explore and scavenge and they develop great skill in knowing how to use all four feet. This can also make them better at getting into things. Also much different than a dog that was kept in a cage but still fearful or feral.

Progress just keeps happening. Tipton was almost like a normal dog with my friend Ren - to the point of playing with her. Feral and fearful dogs progress all throughout their lives - if we get out of their way.

Dogs understand “no”. Perfect example in the video of a peaceful discussion over a new tree branch. Denying dogs their full range of communication skills by not using “no” is dishonoring the dog and their intelligence. Notice neither dog is offended or scared by this interaction. And yes - dogs understand this same communication from people.

This evaluation still tops the charts with craziest. The dog was being assessed for a rescue, and I couldn't do most of the typical eval due to his probability of biting me and his fixating on the leash for a long time. But the rescue response also floored me. Remember rescues need no training or experience to start rescuing dogs and adopting them out. Some are fantastic and some are not. This behavior is not normal or safe no matter what the rescuer thinks.

This evaluation is still the craziest one I have done to date. Both the dog and the rescue wanting me to eval the dog were surprising - to say the least.

Setting up this tree of foster dog ornaments allows us to reminisce and appreciate each dog. It also allows me to remind myself that saving one dog at a time does add up. It helps me stay motivated in what can feel like an endless wheel of dogs in need. Everyone that helps a dog makes a difference.
I think I need a bigger tree.

If you are rescuing dogs and you care more about saving a dangerous dog, or pouring thousands of dollars into a dangerous dog, than your adopters' safety, your ethics and priorities need to be evaluated. I have seen the way lots of rescues behave when they have a dog returned to them for behavior concerns. Usually it is because the dog is a safety risk to the people or animals that are in the home. The run-around the adopters get is ridiculous. The adopters have already been through an ocean of turmoil making the decision to return a dog they love and expected to keep. The rescues come up with a myriad of ways to blame the adopter for the dog's behavior. Then the rescue makes it difficult, guilt ridden process to take the dog back. Some rescues have even insisted the adopter pay for the expenses related to the return of an aggressive dog that should have never been adopted out anyway. The worst is when the owner writes a letter or explains to a rescue that the dog is a safety risk to them or their children, and the rescue totally ignores it and re-lists the dog as "good with children" the NEXT DAY. For me, I have to value the safety of my adopters before anything else. Then I can start matchmaking to help dog and people have a compatible lifestyle. This knowledge is not the responsibility of the average dog adopter because they are assuming the rescue knows what they are doing and looking for guidance . Being competent in dog behavior is the responsibly of the professional dog rescue. There are no requirements for rescues to conduct business. They don't need any dog training knowledge or dog behavior knowledge to rescue dogs. Keep that in mind when you go looking for a dog to adopt. Still adopt - but know what you are looking for.

Shelters are overflowing across the country. According g to this article these are the reasons:
1. Lack of spay neuter during the Covid shutdown
2. Breeding increased during Covid to meet demand and now those cute puppies are adult dogs.
3. Dogs have behavior issues
4. Increase in vet care costs.

There is a county here in New Mexico that is euthanizing over 300 dogs a month. This county has a population of around 23k people. This county couldn’t provide spay neuter services during Covid. Spay neuter is important to overall animal welfare.

Animal shelters are dealing with an influx of dogs and cats since the pandemic lockdown, and the overcrowded conditions are leading to higher euthanasia rates.

Someone please explain why rescues will spend thousands of dollars trying to train aggression out of a dog and then feel good about adopting that dog out. Is there an extra reward in heaven for saving an aggressive dog? That training money and time could be used to save other dogs that have a low risk of hurting people. If you are a rescue and didn’t know what an aggressive dog looks like, and you have an opportunity to learn how to choose safe dogs, and you pass on that opportunity, I have to wonder how you can sleep at night. Mistakes happen to us all cause dogs are dogs and we can’t predict every possible scenario that will happen in a dog’ life. But staying ignorant does not release you from responsibility.
