Sniffy McSniffypants in his backyard forest. There's a new cat in the neighbourhood who has started to jump the fence and enjoy Benni's kingdom (without his royal consent).

It's become a bit problematic. I'm not anti cat in any way, but I do draw the line at neighbourhood cats making themselves at home on Benni's turf (for a host of reasons).

Anyway, at least he's getting a good daily sniff out if the situation.

On the anniversary of his 8th Gotcha Day 🥳 (coinciding with International Dog Day!), we had a solid sniffari in North Hatley... complete with duck-watching and intense p*e investigations (warranting a lifted front paw). Wrapping it up tonight with a snooze on the couch. Wishing for many, many more years and adventures with this boy. Time, please slow down!

BENNI: (giggle)

ME: Bennnnniiiii! Oh Bennnniiiii!

BENNI: (giggle)

ME: Are you hiding?

BENNI: (snort) Nope (giggle)

ME: (sigh) I can see you.

BENNI: That's not me. (giggle)

ME: K well, whoever that dog is behind the birch, tell him there's a cat in his yard.

BENNI: WHAT???!! ***BARKBARKBARKBARKBARK***

ME: (giggle-snort)

ME: Benni.

BENNI: ...

ME: Benni.

BENNI: ...

ME: Benni...?

BENNI: Shhh, I can't.

ME: Can't what?

BENNI: ...

ME: Benni. Will you look at me please? I'm tryna talk to you.

BENNI: Not now.

ME: You're very focused.

BENNI: Yes. I must.

ME: Is that fly bothering you?

BENNI: Wha..? Pfft. No. Of course not.

ME: It's ok to be bothered by a fly.

BENNI: I'm not bothered. I'm jus- OMG OMG DON'T MOVE!

ME: You want me to shoo it away?

BENNI: I think it's safer if we don't move. OMG THERE IT GOES AGAIN!

ME: Wanna snuggle closer?

BENNI: Yeah. I mean, I'm not scared or anything. But if YOU feel safer if we snuggle, well...

ME: Right. Thank you for keeping me safe. 😏

ME: Hey Benni

BENNI: Yes?

ME: Have you been sniffing around the boxes?

BENNI: No.

ME: Are you sure?

BENNI: Yes.

ME: Because I kinda feel that you were.

BENNI: I can't control what you feel.

ME: Right, right. But could you maybe have checked out the box with the shredded paper?

BENNI: Absolutely not.

ME: Maybe you just p*eked inside?

BENNI: I don't even know where that box is.

ME: Well, it's the one you just walked away from. Over there in the-

BENNI: Yeah no... I still don't know what you're talking about.

ME: Shall I get you a mirror?

BENNI: What for?

ME: Because there's a bit of evidence stuck to your nose.

BENNI: No there isn't.

ME: Yeah kiddo... there kinda is.

BENNI: (looks in mirror) Heh-heh... there totally is. 😬

ME: Nice try though.

BENNI: 😁

This right here, is the face of a Birthday Boy who's just chowed down on his birthday breakfast and doesn't understand why he has to wait until lunchtime for his gift! (I have reasons, but he disagrees.)

Happy 8th birthday, Benni-Bunny-Squiggly-Boo! Still the cutest, the kindest, the smartest, the snuggliest, most ridiculous pup ever. ❤️

It's our annual "Undercoat Giveaway" day!

First, I comb Benni's coat with a 99¢ flea comb I've had for 7 years. Then I gather the soft, fine undercoat hairs and Benni and I head for his forest in the back yard. Then we tuck small batches under tree roots to secure them in place, and over the next few days we'll see birds and tiny forest creatures help themselves to some luxurious nesting material!

Currently nesting in Benni's kingdom trees are green herons, goldfinches, chickadees, sparrows and robins. In the ground are a few chipmunks. 🪺🐿️

Merry Christmas Eve! 🎅 The Best Boy has sat next to us while we feast on charcuterie and watch White Christmas, without once being a nuisance. He gets tiny bits of cheese and meat for his brilliant polite behaviour, of course! 🧀 🥓 🎄

ME: See? 4:00pm.

BENNI: I don't believe you.

ME: I've explained this to you every year since 2017.

BENNI: But my routine...

ME: Yes, well. Everyone's routine is affected.

BENNI: Why can't I just eat now anyway?

ME: Because I'm waiting just a few more minutes.

BENNI: But whyyyyy??

ME: To stretch things out a bit. Establish a new routine.

BENNI: This makes NO sense!

ME: I know. 😕

BENNI: So stoopid.

ME: You'll be fine.

BENNI: NO sense.

ME: Hey guess what?

BENNI: (sigh) What.

ME: We just wasted 15 minutes. You hungry?

BENNI: 🥳
