Bennigan's Shenanigans The adventures of Bennigan the Border Terrier. And a bunch of other stuff he does. Plus maybe the occasional dog training tip.

Basically all I do these days is watch this lil' piglet rest and snore.

He's doing really well. Taking it easy, and letting us massage his wound, manipulate his leg (for range of motion exercises), ice the incisions and dote on him.

In exchange for his cooperation, he gets his meds wrapped in bits of cheese.

Well okay... he'd get the meds and the cheese regardless. And the doting.

FYI: He's wearing a Lick Sleeve on his leg, and it's working out perfectly. If I can't actively supervise him, he also wears a soft cone to make ultra sure he doesn't lick his wound.

It's been a long day. Benni's TPLO surgery went smoothly. We're home, he's eaten, and we're all very tired.

It'll be weeks of recovery, but first, we'll just get through the first night!

Letting him snooze peacefully is one of the most challenging things, for me. I just want to snuggle and kiss and squeeze him ALL THE TIME. I hope we've got pain management as under control as I think we do. I wish I could ask him.

We've managed to land an appointment with *THEE* orthopedic surgeon in the area, but not until Jan 12.

Meanwhile, our little hop-along tripod is eating well, is in a good mood, and continues to tolerate the construction sounds like a champ. He's carried up and down stairs, and has half a dozen beds to choose from that don't require any jumping or climbing.

The weather is sucking spectacularly, with daily snowfall and daytime high temperatures hovering well below freezing, making it feel more like Jan-Feb... and Benni super-hates extreme cold.

Hang in there, lil dude. We gotchoo. ❤️

Benni has an ouch. A misstep on ice during yesterday's walk resulted in an injury to a back leg. Not sure what exactly is wrong, so we're headed to the vet this afternoon to check it out.

He's eating and drinking (at least there's that), but not putting any weight on the leg.

He would very much appreciate some positive vibes and also (his words) "sympathy and cheese". I'll handle the fromage; please feel free to extend the rest. 😉

BENNI: Are we done yet?

ME: Not even close, boo.

BENNI: I miss my couch.

ME: Ah yes, your plushy perch.

BENNI: So comfy.

ME: You're not looking terribly uncomfortable right now.

BENNI: He owes me.

ME: We won't be basement-ridden forever. Just a few more weeks, pookie.

BENNI: I didn't sign up for this.

ME: Could be worse.

BENNI: I don't think so.

ME: Could be the dead of summer, without power... without a/c.

BENNI: I could be outside.

ME: Still no a/c.

BENNI: I cou-

ME: Yes, yes... you're obviously suffering terribly. We all are. A few more weeks, and we're done.

BENNI: Good!

ME: Well, mostly done...

BENNI: Wait, what??!

ME: But we'll definitely be done with living in the basement.

BENNI: I'll have my couch back?

ME: You'll have your couch back.

BENNI: I didn't sign up for this.

ME: 🙄

When Benni was a wee pup in 2017, a forest behind our house was turned into a street and several houses were built. It was construction sounds every day for months.

The summer we brought him home, he played, frolicked, explored, ate, and napped outside in his yard, surrounded by loud, abrasive noises.

It was an important developmental stage for him, and he was socialized to bangs and booms and beeps and grinding wood chippers and shouting voices.

Fast forward to today...

Our home is undergoing extensive renovations. Work started today. We are glamping in the basement where we have a makeshift kitchen, living room, and office space.

Above us, they're tearing down walls and ripping up flooring. Wood, ceramic, and metal are crashing to the floor. Music is blaring.

And this is Benni. Sweet, amazing Benni. 😊 We are so, so lucky!

Today's adventure in the private wooded dog park! Gorgeous, GORGEOUS autumn day in the Eastern Townships of Quebec.

Part 1 - Benni's on a long line. We're just starting our walk and the forest is magical. Slow-motion leaves are falling all around us.

Part 2 - I've unclipped his leash to allow him to explore. The park is massive and densely forested. So he keeps his neon yellow harness and wears his Tractive GPS tracker. Benni frequently checks in with me on his own (unprompted), as he's been taught since he was a baby. This is what you see here.

Part 3 - He's been given the cue to go explore as he wishes, so off he goes. But because this is our first time off-leash in this location, I ask him to check in with me now and then, just to stay connected. After he does, he's free to run off again.

He's just the best boy ever. 🥰

Benni was at the far end of his forest, and I whistled from the kitchen window. This was the result.

How did I build such a reliable recall? I have always, always made his coming to me a very rewarding behaviour. For Benni (the food ju**ie) that means something yummy is available to him when he comes, 100% of the time.

I also made sure I never used a whistle to call him for something unpleasant. I don't want him to calculate whether responding to a whistle might be a good idea or a bad one. I want him to respond with the sp*ed and enthusiasm that you see in this video.

Also, his bouncy ears are ridiculously cute when he runs. 🥰

Benni had minor surgery a couple of weeks ago to remove a small lipoma. He's fine, and only required to avoid vigorous activity for another day or two. After that, we can resume adventures and zoomies!

Today we hung out in his backyard forest, checking out the colours. It's mostly pine trees in there, but a few baby maples have grown over the last several years and are putting on a lovely show this week! 🍁

Sniffy McSniffypants in his backyard forest. There's a new cat in the neighbourhood who has started to jump the fence and enjoy Benni's kingdom (without his royal consent).

It's become a bit problematic. I'm not anti cat in any way, but I do draw the line at neighbourhood cats making themselves at home on Benni's turf (for a host of reasons).

Anyway, at least he's getting a good daily sniff out if the situation.

On the anniversary of his 8th Gotcha Day 🥳 (coinciding with International Dog Day!), we had a solid sniffari in North Hatley... complete with duck-watching and intense p*e investigations (warranting a lifted front paw). Wrapping it up tonight with a snooze on the couch. Wishing for many, many more years and adventures with this boy. Time, please slow down!
