Luna hatched in New York and suffered a leg injury at the farm with her owner. Her mom at that time did not have the time nor means to fix Luna, so Luna made the trip South to Florida with Winky (one eyed Silkie). Upon arriving at Sweetheart Silkies, I quickly realized Luna was going to need to see a vet. She was dragging her leg, and although she could get around ok, she would never live the life
of a real chicken. If the leg stayed on, she would live inside 24/7 to prevent sores from forming on legs and feet. After a consult with Dr. Herb, we decided to amputate. After a long but successful recovery... she is a happy outside chicken enjoying a full life with her flock mates! She does have to stay away from the boys - she loses her balance - but she just hatched a couple of eggs and became a mommy this spring of 2015! Winky has since passed away and turned his page over to Luna, the Blue Silkie Showgirl with one leg. Please see the Bio section below to read about Luna... here is Winky's story...
My name is Winky! I hatched in Ontario, CA and hatched on April 7th! I am a cute little splash silkie with one eye! surprisingly, another one eyed splash silkie chick hatched in Florida within the same week! And we found each other! Unfortunately, Florida Winky died as the chick. However my family - Gillian and Brenna - genourously gave me up to FL Winky's mommy. With lots of friends, (they called it a chicken train) I traveled from Ontario all the way to Florida with a cute Showgirl named "Luna" in November 2014. I have my own lIttle flock of girls and I am enjoying the warm Florida weather. The more support and prayers I receive, the more hope my moms have for me to survive and become a grown, happy chicken! Thank you all for liking my page and I promise to keep you updated with my daily activities! :) Disabilities are only a small set back... we can all overcome them!
