Last week I was driving through Denton, Maryland. Denton isn’t a super memorable place for many – other than it’s a town on the way to the beach that almost every DC/MD/VA resident has driven through. It holds special memories for me though.
Denton is the town in which a little fearful beagle named Stephanie was caught and taken to the local shelter. If you met Stephanie the beagle at that time, you’d have to wonder how such a fearful animal was ever caught.
One day, a human named Stephanie (me) spotted Stephanie the Beagle at the shelter and knew it had to be a sign. If you know Stephanie the human (me) you know that this dog met all of her important criteria.
Cute beagle âś…
Fearful dog âś…
Same name âś… (and sign from the heavens).
And so the two Stephanies met and began their journey together.
In truth, the beginning years were not easy. They were downright hard. The easiest part of the journey was crossing the Bay Bridge and renaming the dog Lila.
I thought I knew about fearful dogs. I didn’t know anything about how to help a dog who shook at the sound of food dropping on the floor. Or a dog who was so fearful of humans that she would freeze or run and hide or p*e or p**p on herself. Or a dog who would wail when I left the house even when she seemed to not be emotionally connected to me at all. Or a dog who would never seek out affection and would only give it when she thought I was asleep. Or a dog who would shake for hours during a thunderstorm.
I thought that love and patience were what she needed.
I was so wrong.
Love, patience, AND training were what she needed. And it took awhile to find Mark and find the type of training that would help Lila feel well in this world. You know, something that would help Lila become an optimist.
Lila and I have had quite a life together over these past 14 years. She has traveled with me, she has met many people, she has curled up in many laps, she has attended a few of our seminars and worked a room full of people, and she has experienced unbridled joy in her constant pursuit of adventure and snacks.
These are the thoughts that flashed through my mind as I drove through Denton last week. Lucky me to have been gifted with my now wonderfully optimistic Lila. Every day brings thoughts of naughtiness for her. And chuckles from me!
Our days are now numbered but our lives together have been so rich. I’m grateful for the lessons. The biggest of which was that Lila’s life could be large, full and fun.
And as I drove over the Bay Bridge on my way back to DC, I was thankful to Mark for helping me give Lila the life she deserves – and a life so much fuller and richer than I ever could have imagined on my first ride home with the former Stephanie.

It’s a Week 2 Louie update!
Little Louie was at a NC shelter and had limited options due to his discomfort with people and touch and his propensity to snap or bite when uncomfortable. We are fostering him and are documenting the process of helping him become the optimist he doesn’t know he wants to be!
Lucky Louie - Day 7 Update

Louie -Day 1
The story of Louie, a little guy who is aggressive and fearful, who was recently taken in by the McCabes from Training Between the Ears. Sharing his transformation story.
If you are following Louie’s story, we picked him up from the shelter yesterday! It will take some time for him to be ready to go to a new home but we are thrilled to be part of his journey :-)
More Reactivity Q&As - You ask, we answer!
We are going live to answer more questions related to reactivity!
Got a reactive dog? Let's talk!
We love working with reactive dogs and the humans who love them! It is the topic we get the most questions about. Hop on and join the conversation and ask us a question!
Common Question: Dog Won't Take Food When Triggered Mark McCabe addresses a common question about dogs who refuse to take food when they see a trigger, even from a distance. He explains that while it may seem like an irresolvable problem, it is actually a challenge that can be overcome. How? Take a listen...
Understanding the "Why" of Dog Behavior (reactivity, aggression, fear, hyper-excitability)
Understanding the "Why" of Dog Behavior (reactivity, aggression, fear, hyper-excitability) Mark McCabe addresses a common question about understanding the "why" of dog behavior. While many believe that knowing the reasons behind a dog's behavior is crucial for solving problems, he explains why it is not necessary.
Rewiring Emotions: Why Obedience Isn't the Solution Mark McCabe discusses why obedience training is often not effective in solving behavior problems such as reactivity, aggression, and fear in dogs. He explains that these issues are driven by emotions, and obedience only addresses the outcome of the problem, not the root cause. One can actually rewire emotions and create new emotional reactions in dogs. Don't worry, we aren't saying that you have to throw all of your dog's obedience away but rather we want to provide a different perspective on how to approach behavior problems such as reactivity, aggression, anxiety, and resource guarding. Have a listen :-) #tbteheals
We love having the opportunity to answer questions about reactivity! It's normal to have questions about our upcoming course and whether it's the right fit for them. We get it! We'll be answering questions like these for the next few days. Today we answer these three questions: ❓Does this work with a rescue who we don’t know his history, but clearly he lived on the streets, may have been abused, and has resource guarding issues, including biting his owner? ❓I have tried 3 different trainers and >5K in various trainers, behavioral vets, special diets, etc. When does an owner know when the dog is just unable to change? ❓We live in a busy area and do not have a place where we can keep an appropriate distance away his from triggers to practice. He needs lots of space. We can drive someplace but there is no guarantee we will see any dogs/people while we are there especially now that it’s getting dark earlier. How would that impact training? Also he has a very high prey drive and often will go over threshold with the scent of an animal.
Maia was a pet owner/guardian who had three very difficult dogs. They were all anxious - each one with their own issues and collectively, a big project - separation anxiety, confinement anxiety, resource guarding, reactivity, and aggression. Maia shares her story of finding TBTE and how it changed not only her dogs' lives but her own. What was the starting point for Maia? It was the Guided L1! If you want to make changes in your own life... If you want to change your dog's life... If becoming a professional trainer is a dream of yours... If you are a professional trainer and want to learn a different way of being with, thinking about, and training dogs... Join us for our upcoming L1. ⏰Doors close TONIGHT!⏰ To sign up: https://www.trainingbetweentheears.com/L1-June2023
As registration for our new Reactivity Course winds down, we know that not everyone will be in a position to take our course – perhaps due to finances, perhaps due to timing, perhaps even due to interest. But we wanted to share some thoughts with those who are still struggling with their dog’s challenging behavior. You may have seen our post about PREDICTION this week. We believe that changing a dog’s prediction is key to changing a dog’s behavior. What does that even mean? And how would one go about it? In this video we delve into: 💡What does prediction mean? 💡Why is it so important? 💡What does changing a dog’s prediction look like in real life? (We share a case study) 💡We share some easy and actionable ideas that you can implement TODAY to begin changing your dog’s prediction of things that happen in their world. (And btw, the registration for the reactivity course was extended for just a little while longer so you still have a little more time to jump in! The link is in the comments.)
