Let’s pin down how the Pinstripe trait works in crested geckos! Pinstripe is a unique trait because it influences both structure and pattern. It’s defined by raised scales running along either side of the dorsum, forming two distinct lines that often match the gecko’s color pattern.

As a dominant trait, Pinstripe must be expressed to be passed on to offspring. It also interacts with other traits, most notably Tiger. Pinstripe tends to push Tiger and other patterns into a more horizontal orientation, which can create a dark stripe beneath the pin, known as a “Reverse Pinstripe”. On the other hand, strong Tigering can break up the lines, producing “dashed pins” or a “partial pinstripe”.

Geckos with a strong Pinstripe influence often develop lateral striping as well, resulting in the striking “Quadstripe” patterning.
