Let’s pin down how the Pinstripe trait works in crested geckos! Pinstripe is a relatively unique trait in that it affects both structure and pattern. Pinstripe affects the structure of crested geckos by aligning and pronouncing the raised scales on either side of the dorsum to create two distinct pinstripes. The trait also aligns pattern color horizontally. Often there will also be a line of pattern color running along the raised dorsal stripes.

Pinstripe heavily interacts with the tiger trait, often pushing tigering to orient horizontally instead of vertically. If tigering gathers along the raised pin to form a dark stripe, this is known as a “reverse pin.”

Because tigering pushes harlequin patterns, pinstripe also influences harlequin patterns to orient horizontally. Sometimes this results in a second set of stripes centered in the laterals. We call geckos expressing these stripes, “quad stripes” or “quad pins.”

While pinstripe can influence tiger, strong tiger stripes can also influence pinstriping. Sometimes, particularly strong tiger stripes can break up pinstripes, resulting in an expression called “dashed pins” or “partial pins.”

When working with pinstripe, the trait behaves dominantly with the strength of the trait varying from animal to animal. We recommend setting a goal for what you want the trait to accomplish and pairing geckos together based on the strength of their pinstripe and tiger traits to accomplish that goal.

For example: to create animals with bold, vertical tiger stripes, pair geckos with strong tiger expression with little to no pinstripe expression. Conversely, for strong quad stripes, pair pinstripe geckos with little to no tiger expression.

Begin working with pinstripe today with 25% off of all pinstripe geckos through June 16th! Find them through the link in our bio!

Most keepers know that ultraviolet light is important for reptiles, but do you know why?

UV-B light is responsible for triggering the synthesis of Vitamin D in reptiles, and many other animals, including humans (though we require far less UV-B than our pets)! Vitamin D, in turn, assists in the absorption of calcium and other metabolic processes.

In nature, reptiles absorb UV-B by basking in sunlight. Recent research suggests that even animals that don’t get much direct sunlight benefit from a provided UV-B bulb. Many species display a behavior known as “cryptic basking” in which they expose a portion of their body to sunlight, while keeping the rest hidden away. Sunlight also provides UV-A light which is visible to many reptiles. Thankfully, commercially available UV-B T5s provide both UV-B and UV-A so your reptile can bask, and see the world around them to the full extent their eyes allow!

To determine the amount of UV Light needed for a reptile, research has been conducted to categorize species into categories known as Ferguson Zones based on basking behavior. Reptiles that don't get much sunlight are categorized in group 1, and the amount of sunlight needed increases with the zone number, all the way up to zone 4 reptiles who can be found basking in the midday heat.

You may have also heard of UV-C light, and have wondered “How does UV-C fit into reptile care?” Thankfully, this is a part of the UV spectrum we don’t have to worry about! UV-C is an even higher energy form of UV light that gets blocked by the ozone layer and the atmosphere. As such, reptiles aren’t exposed to this light in nature, and there is no benefit to providing it. In fact, high levels of UV-C light are harmful to most animals and is commercially used as a germicide.

Find yourself needing another fixture so your reptile can reap the benefits of UV light? Through June 16th, take 15% off all Reptile Systems T5 fixtures at Pangea Reptile!

Check out all the red spots he had hiding in there! When we've shared photos of Rorschach, our crested gecko with crazy spot clusters, he's been fired up, significantly darkening the oil spots in his clusters. In these photos, however, he's fired down revealing all the red spots hidden underneath.

These red spots only appear in his clusters instead of being peppered throughout his body like a confetti dalmatian crested gecko. We're still obsessed with Rorschach's incredible spot clusters, what do you think about them?

Pharaoh has flecks of gray and muted tones throughout his dorsum, and other white areas on his body. Silicone feeding cups have many advantages over traditional disposable cups! Here are some of our favorite reasons to switch!

• Reusability - The main draw to these cups is that they are reusable! This means, you’ll never have to keep track of how many feeding cups you have left, and it keeps a lot of waste out of landfills!

• Easy to Clean - Silicone is non-stick, and dishwasher safe making these dishes super easy to clean!

• Color - With multiple colors to choose from, find a dish that pops, or choose a subdued black dish to blend in. The choice is yours!

• Durability - Silicone is an ultra-tough, heat-resistant material that will stand up to years of use!

• No Microplastics - Being a product of silica, when silicone waste breaks down, it doesn’t create harmful toxic microplastics.

What isopod species is right for you? From Rubber Duckies to Dwarf Whites, there are a lot of isopods to choose from! Here are our recommendations for some common reasons to keep them:

For a bioactive enclosure, our picks are dwarf whites (Trichorhina tomentosa), and Porcellionides pruinosis are both great picks! P. pruinosis in particular handles a wide variety of environments well, making it a great choice for dryer enclosures as well!

As many bioactive keepers know, isopods will often become snacks for the reptiles or amphibians they live with. Some species are actually well-suited for being feeders! Porcellio dilatatus (giant canyon) and Porcellio laevis (dairy cow) are both very prolific and a colony can be set up with the intention of pulling from it to feed a reptile. Dwarf whites can also be used for micro geckos and dart frogs!

Finally, for those interesting in keeping these little guys as a terrarium pet, Porcellio scaber, Cubaris species, and Armadillidium species come in many interesting colors, and are all fun to watch!

Save on cork bark flats for your next project through Memorial Day! Cork bark is one of our favorite materials for reptile enclosures and more! Water-resistant, lightweight, and sturdy, cork flats can be used in many ways within an enclosure! Here are some of our favorite uses:

- When laid flat on the floor of an enclosure, flats make for great hides for your reptile! They help your animal feel secure, but can easily be removed if you need to get to your reptile for health checks.

- Larger flats can be placed vertically to provide a rough surface for vining plants to climb. This rough surface also doubles as a scratching post for your reptile when it’s shedding!

- When placed under heat, or UVB, cork bark flats can make great basking spots! Their rough surface is easy to climb up, allowing your reptile to easily find a comfortable position!

- Being lightweight, cork bark flats are super easy to position in a custom background, and can be easily secured with silicone or expanding foam!

- Finally, with all their nooks and crannies, cork bark flats make perfect homes for isopods, both in your enclosure and in any extra colonies!

Tell us how you like to use cork bark flats in the comments and stock up through the link in our bio!

Pangea Family & Story

Owner Matthew Parks started Pangea Reptile LLC in 2001 with the breeding of geckos and small-scale sale of dry goods. Several years later we have now grown into one of the largest online sellers of reptile food, products, and quality geckos. We are constantly growing and expanding our line of products and services to meet our customer needs.

But the real story behind every one of Pangea Reptile LLC’s products and specimens is the spirit of discovery that Matt experienced on his first chance encounter with a crested gecko. This spark of wonder woven through our business makes us strive to be innovators over salesmen, scientists instead of staff, and craftsmen rather than breeders.

Our goal is to use this energy to have the very best customer service in the industry as well as the finest animals and products available.

We encourage, “Whoa that’s cool.”
