This happy fellow is Elmo, a 6 year old 65 lb. Lab that is an exceptional boy! His family moved and left him at an animal control shelter, and we were happy to take him in and promised to find him a forever home. He has a great personality and gets along with everyone. He’s a mellow guy, house trained and mannerly. He likes other dogs, but is not big on roughhouse playing. He is currently in a foster home, and we would love to see him in his forever home for Christmas!🎄

Remember, through the month of December, a sponsor is paying half of all adoption fees, which for Elmo would be $175, and includes all his vetting-vaccinations, bloodwork, heartworm test and neuter.

Applicants must have a securely *fenced yard at least 4 feet high. *In some instances for some dogs, exceptions may be considered. Applicants will be screened, including a home visit.

If you would like to meet Elmo, complete an application on our website dirksfund.com for an appointment. All members of the household, including dogs must come to meet him. Any other dogs in the home must be current on vaccinations and altered. Children should be old enough to understand how to properly interact with dogs. Adoption hours are 10 to 2 Saturdays and Sundays. Pacific, MO.

Update on Theo:
We are cautiously optimistic. After being on a high dosage of prednisone, his retinas in both eyes have begun to reattach, and his vision has slowly begun to improve. His prednisone dosage is being gradually reduced. He is also on meds to help protect his digestive system from the side effects of the prednisone. He has an appointment for a recheck December 15. At some point he will likely be on an autoimmune medication which also can have side effects. In the meantime he is soaking up the love and enjoying treats and an extra small meal since the prednisone increases his appetite. Again, we want to thank those who have donated towards his care and have sent prayers and good wishes.

KFC in Pacific had a fund raiser to help pay medical expenses for Theo who was losing his sight due to an autoimmune problem. $10 bought a box of fresh hot popcorn chicken with all the proceeds going to Dirks. They raised $850! We’re very grateful and touched by their generosity.
One of our volunteers put together a framed Thank You certificate and presented it today.

I’m Luna, and I’m a fun loving girl! Gotta a ball? Throw it and see how excited I am to chase it. Gotta pool or sprinkler or hose? Oh boy, do I love playing in water! Show me a treat and tell me to sit pretty, and I’ll do that…just for a moment, but I’ll do it! I’m house trained and know basic commands, and I ride great in a vehicle. I would love some big kids to play with me; I’m choosy about my canine friends, and I might be tempted to chase cats.
I’m a four year old 70 lb Black Labrador Retriever mix. I had a family, but I got lost, and they didn’t come to find me at animal control. My dearest wish is for a family that will always be there for me.
Applicants must have a securely fenced yard at least 4 feet high that encloses a door to the home. Applicants will be screened, including a home visit.
If you would like to meet Luna, complete an application on our website dirksfund.com. All members of the household must come to meet her, including other dogs. Other dogs in the home must be current on vaccinations and altered. It’s recommended that kids should be 8+. Adoption hours are Saturdays and Sundays 10 - 2. Pacific, MO.

Snoopy, aka Snoop Dog, is a Great Pyrenees mix around a year old and 75 lbs. He’s been living outside at an assisted living facility, and now it’s time for him to have a real home and family of his own.
Our info is that he is good with dogs, cats and kids, but chases chickens.
We love the way he waves with his right paw and likes to snuggle. He has good inside manners at the shelter and rode here and on his trip to the vet like a gentleman. We love the way he likes to give a high five for a treat and a thank you kiss before he eats when you feed him, and he has one of the best smiles!
Applicants must have a secure fence at least 4 feet high that encloses a door to the home. No invisible fences. Applicants will be screened, including a home visit.

If you would like to meet Snoopy, complete an application on our website dirksfund.com. All members of the household, including other dogs must come to meet him. Kids should be old enough to understand how to properly interact with dogs. Other dogs in the home must be current on vaccinations and altered. Adoption hours are Saturday and Sunday from 10 to 2. Pacific, MO.

Buckeye is a 3 year old 90 lb Maremma Sheepdog mix. He's been at the shelter for two years now. It's way past time for him to have a home of his own. We actually thought he might have found that last weekend, but it was too good to be true, and he is still waiting for that right person.
While he is a guardian breed and is vocal about meeting strangers outside, it takes about a minute, and once he trusts you, he is a cuddler and couch potato. He loves to play in our yard, chasing a ball, or just running for the fun of it. He knows quite a few commands, loves car rides and is great on leash, and of course is housetrained.
He will likely need to be the only dog in his new home, and any kids should be older. No cats or chickens. As far as containment, he is an expert jumper and would need a privacy fence at least 6 feet high and would need to not be left alone in the yard. He was on an invisible fence prior to coming to us and that did not work for him. We would consider someone without a fence who is an avid walker or runner and would keep him on leash.

Applicants will be screened, including a home visit.

If you would like to meet Buckeye, complete an application on our website dirksfund.com. All members of the household must come to meet him. Adoption hours are Saturdays and Sundays from 10 - 2. Pacific, MO.

Jackson (black ears) and Watson are Great Pyrenees. Jackson is 4 years old and Watson is 6. They were both adopted from Dirks by a family who moved cross country and couldn't take them, so they came back to us to find a forever home. They are a bonded pair, with Watson being dependent on Jackson, and as such, they will only be adopted together. Our bonded pairs are offered at a reduced cost to the lucky family who adopts them.
This sweet pair will win your hearts. Jackson is an instant love bug, and it takes Watson just a bit longer to warm up, but you can't help but fall in love with them both. They are chill dogs and they like being inside in a comfortable environment with a soft bed, snacks, brushing and petting...lots of petting.
They have been with kids, but smaller kids make them nervous and they prefer the older kids of around 12+. Unknown with cats.

Applicants must have a securely fenced yard, at least 4 feet high that encloses a door to the home. No invisible fences or pens. Applicants will be screened, including a home visit.

If you would like to meet Jackson and Watson, complete an application on our website dirksfund.com. All members of the family, including dogs, must come to meet them. Other dogs in the home must be current on vaccinations and altered. Adoption hours are Saturdays and Sundays 10 - 2. Pacific, MO.

Sadly, Caesar’s adoption did not work out. The other dog in the home did not appreciate Caesar’s in your face style. That’s the bad news, so he will do best as an only pet. Introducing Caesar, a year and a half old Golden Retriever, weighing 70 lbs. His owner didn’t have time for him, so he’s looking for a forever home where he can be the center of attention. He is energetic and needs training to meet his potential of being the best boy! He likes other dogs but doesn't know when enough is enough and needs to be the only dog in the home. Unknown how he is with cats. Due to his energy level, kids should probably be 10+.

Applicants must have a securely fenced yard, no invisible fences. In some circumstances for some dogs, exceptions may be considered. Applicants will be screened, including a home visit.

If you would like to meet Caesar, complete an application on our website dirksfund.com. All members of the household, including other dogs, must come to meet him. Other dogs in the home must be current on vaccinations and altered. Adoption hours are Saturdays and Sundays 10-2. Pacific, MO.

His foster mom has worked wonders with him. Scroll down for his bio and adoption info. We can’t wait to see what lucky family will adopt him!

Bear and Bailey were found abandoned in a park and taken to a small town animal control where they were running out of time. The staff was attached to them and realized what special dogs they are and asked if we could take them. We said YES, and are so glad we did. They are exceptional dogs, most likely Lab/Pyr mix and between 2 and 3 years old and 80-90 lbs. They are good on leash, mannerly and seem to be house trained.
Bear is the more independent of the two, and Bailey loves to play with her brother. They can be adopted together, or under the right circumstances, separately. Bailey especially would need another compatible and playful dog to be her companion.
Bear had heartworms when we got them, but he has successfully gone through treatment and is healthy now. They are good with other compatible dogs, unknown about cats, and kids old enough to understand how to properly interact with dogs would be fine.

Applicants must have a securely fenced yard at least 4 feet high that encloses a door to the home. No invisible fences or pens. In some circumstances for some dogs, exceptions may be considered. Applicants will be screened, including a home visit.

If you would like to meet Bear and Bailey, complete an application on our website dirksfund.com. All members of the household, including other dogs, must come to meet them. Other dogs in the home must be current on vaccinations and altered. Adoption hours are Saturdays and Sundays from 10 - 2. Pacific, MO.

Training Tip ✅

Dealing with separation anxiety often involves a combination of training, behavior modification, and sometimes medication prescribed by a veterinarian. Here are some strategies to help manage separation anxiety in dogs:

Gradual desensitization: Gradually increase the time your dog spends alone, starting with very short intervals, and rewarding calm behavior.
Counterconditioning: Associate the act of you leaving with positive things, like special treats or toys.
Provide mental stimulation: Puzzle toys and interactive games can help keep your dog mentally engaged.
Training and obedience: Basic training commands can help build confidence in your dog.
Medication: In severe cases, your veterinarian might prescribe medication to help manage anxiety.
It's essential to consult with a veterinarian or a professional dog trainer to develop a tailored plan for your dog's specific needs if you suspect separation anxiety. Addressing this issue with patience and appropriate techniques can help your dog become more comfortable when left alone.
