Hurricane Aura, Living with a wild and crazy Wolfdog This is the story of Aura, our CsV Wolfdog. It's for anyone interested in Wolfdogs, but mostly it's for us to look back on and see how far we have come!

24/11/2024

Popped Aura upstairs for 15 minutes, whilst we had someone come around to re-home some tropical fish. Heard lots of banging and thrashing around up there, indicating she wasn't happy with being excluded. Went up to collect her to find she had unstuffed and shredded three of my teddies!! 😫😞

So she was a complete and utter numpty last night. Had eaten her usual daily amount of food but was absolutely ravenous at bedtime, and totally obsessed with finding something to eat.

Started with the sour cooking apples that have been falling from the trees in the garden. Managed to drag her away from them. Came in from the garden and she became obsessed with the bottom of the shoe cupboard in the hallway. I thought maybe a treat had fallen under there, but when I looked closer she had opened the door and was ripping bits of the bottom shelf of the cupboard off and trying to eat the wood!

Distracted her from that and went to brush my teeth, turned around to find she had stolen the loo roll off the holder and was trying to eat that.

Went up to bed and she spent the next half an hour obsessively search the bedroom for something to eat, a tissue (one if her favourite bedtime snacks!), a sock, bit of paper, anything. Even pulled my jogging bottoms off the side so she could rummage in the pockets.

Just relentless, she was, and took her ages to settle! 🙄

Picture to remind me that, at times, she is really adorable!

So today is Christmas Eve in our house. We have been out and picked up stuff for a Christmas day dinner and some mince pies (Aura has doggy donuts instead). And, later we will be present wrapping.

Brought her presents that we normally wouldn't buy, because she will destroy them in minutes. One of her favourite things is removing the squeakers from toys. I said they will all be wrecked within 20 mins, Nath's reply was "yes, but just think how much fun she will have for those 20 minutes" 🤣

Hopefully this is just Christmas Day 1 of the 2 she might be having this year, but if it's not we know we got to do this with her ❤️

If you look closely at her back legs you can see how the tumor is now starting to affect her gait.

19/10/2024

When you think the end is close because she's been struggling to go to the toilet the last few days. Then realise it's more likely constipation due to eating the live field mouse the other night. Managed to go toilet to day. A relief for both of us 🤣

Morning out at Markeaton Park, with an unusually well behaved Wolfie ❤️

Happy 10th birthday to our girl. So happy she made it! 😁🥳

We have had some real testing moments, some awesome breakthroughs, and made just the best memories ❤️

Having a quiet day at home with her today, which is lovely. Getting lots of extra treats and cuddles for sure 🎂🎁🐾

A bit obsessive with the self soothing behaviours this morning! Doesn't do it often, and when she does it's not for long. She normally stops whatever she was doing to the sound of the words "walk" or "treat". Words alone weren't enough this morning. But she flew off the sofa once I picked up my trainers, and thought that I was going without her!

One of the very few downsides of living in the countryside is that when the weather starts to cool down we get the odd field mouse that wants to move in. I usually use a humane trap, take them for a drive and set them free.

One managed to get in tonight. Aura chased it around the kitchen for 5 minutes, catch it before I could, and then ate it! Feel so sorry for the mouse, was only a baby. And, now I'm wondering if someone will have a dodgy tummy in the morning!

A few nights a go, the biggest spider I've ever seen dropped from the ceiling. It hit the floor with a thud, which we all heard. And, moved a quick as lightning across the floor. Regardless of the fact that Aura is getting in on doggy years now, and has cancer, she still managed to catch and eat it! Her reflexes are still spot on. Made me cringe!!! 😳

Some days she just adorable, but only some! 🙄

So here are the potential scenarios that were running around my head...

1. She had managed to open the understairs cupboard. If she had she would have likely eaten a box full Huel (around 6kg) neat. Without water this would have definitely added to her bowel problems!

2. She might possibly have opened the freezer, and ate the contents, again that would have given her serious tummy troubles.

3. Had she opened the utility door? And if so, then preceded to eat around 7kg of Lily's Kitchen plus the contents of my mom's shopping bag, which would have included
14 penguin bars, 3 bags of jelly beans and 12 tubs of mandarins in jelly!

4. Final vision playing through my head, she had managed to open the stairs door. Leading to a fun game of chase the cat, possibly take the short jump from the back bedroom window to the bathroom roof, spot next doors chickens and launch into their garden for a slap up meal. Possibly then, head into the village to cause havoc there, followed by a bit of pheasant and deer hunting over Calke.

All these scenarios were running through my head, so couldn't settle and watch the second half of the show. And anyone be who knows my dog will agree, all scenarios were entirely possible.

When she's missing off camera for 30 mins and she's even not responding when you are talking to her through it (which usually freaks her out), the only option left is to imagine she has stole food and it must be a lot because it's talking her half an hour to eat it, or she has managed to escape the house!

So what was the final outcome, I hear you ask? ....

No damage done, no stolen food, no Houdini escape. Seems she had just lay in a camera blind spot and slept for half an hour!!

I need not have worried. She was just sleeping like a normal well behaved dogs. Will I have faith and trust her next time? Hell no, extra security measures and additions back camera are in my to do list 😂

Coming home from a really good theatre show at the interval because the wolfdog has been missing off the camera for the last half an hour! 😳

Sunday morning cuddles with the girl ❤️ 10 months post diagnosis and every day is precious ☺️

It's her birthday this coming week and we are so pleased that she has made it this far. Christmas would be our next goal but I'm not sure she will make it that far. The tumor has grown considerably, the swelling is now visible, she is doing more self soothing behaviours, and she is starting to have some difficulty going to the toilet. Otherwise you wouldn't think anything was wrong, she still wants to steal, chase the cat, go for walks, bark at other dogs and be her normal crazy, irritating self 😂

But we do know the time is getting closer, and because we aren't sure she will make Christmas, we are going to bring it forward. We are going to pick a weekend day in the next couple of weeks, and give her a pile of Christmas presents to open and do her a Christmas dinner with all the trimmings. That way, not seeing her open her presents on Christmas morning, if she's not here, hopefully won't seem quite as bad. And she will get her normal morning of shredding wrapping paper all over the house, eating treats, demolishing toys and removing every single squeakers! 😁

And, if she does manage to stay with us until Christmas then she will have two Christmas days this year 😁

Four days into Prednisone and irritation has settled down considerably, appetite has increased in equal measure. So much so, she stole the fruit bowl off the kitchen worktop last night whilst I was in the loo 🙄

9 months post diagnosis. We are starting to see signs of discomfort now. She is starting to bite and nibble her back end quite a lot, and is doing lots of self soothing licking. Have a vet appointment this morning to see if we can get anything to relieve the discomfort or irritation of the tumor. The shape of her poo is also telling us the tumor has grown, and she had one day this week where she struggled to go toilet.

Outside of these times she's still her usually mischievous, annoying, crazy self 🤣 Still eating, drinking, walking and testing the boundaries! Just hoping some sort of meds will ease things, and give us a bit more time. Would really love to be able to get to see her birthday and Christmas with her 🙏
