GREEN MTN PUG RESCUE

GREEN MTN PUG RESCUE GMPR covers Maine, NH, VT and Northern NY. We are an all volunteer rescue group saving pugs 🐾 They receive vet care too if needed. Thanks to all the volunteers!
(1)

Green Mountain Pug Rescue is a 501 (c) (3) non profit rescue group of volunteers within Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine & parts of New York. Pugs come to us from Owner Surrenders, Shelters, other rescues, and from puppymill breeders that turn them into us, etc. They are placed in loving foster homes for their evaluation on their personalities and what home would be best suited for them. GMPR covers

all shots, Hw/lyme tests, bloodwork prior to surgery to ensure they are healthy, spay/neuter and dentals if needed. We work to ensure that the pug is as healthy as we can get them prior to adoption. If there is anything wrong long-term we will tell you in their bio. Green Mountain Pug Rescue is supported by an all volunteer staff. We are only able to help pugs through the generous monetary donations and volunteer time that people graciously give. If you want to help us with events and such- fill out a volunteer form on our website at GMPR.org. Donations to GMPR go for vet care for the pugs, and anything they need while in GMPR. We work closely with lots of rescues to ensure that all pugs in our area are safe and secure. We educate people on puppymills and what that means. A large % of our pugs here come from puppymills originally and we are very committed to helping these precious pugs learn love, patience, and trust!

***AVAILABLE TO NEW AND PREVIOUSLY APPROVED APPLICANTS***

Meet Roscoe, this little Duke of Hazzard is a 6'ish-year-old Chug with a very particular wish list for his new diggs; Food and YOU... Let's get right to the point, Roscoe is a human-loving, deeply loyal, and resource-guarding renegade who needs to be the only animal in the home. No cats, no dogs, no toddlers sneaking snacks..... no bones about it! This little guy is looking for a solo gig.. His resource guarding applies to food, toys, water, and especially you. If Roscoe wants it, he guards it. No biting, but he will with passion and conviction make his feelings known. He’s a very skilled little thief, counters, trash cans, dropped morsels... Nothing is safe. Adding to his feverish love of anything edible, Roscoe has some stomach sensitives. He's an owner surrender a few times removed, and had some weight swings. He had a skin infection some years ago and was on a strong med for an extended period of time to treat it that his belly didn't tolerate well. During that time, he lost a lot of weight. Did his previous owner limit his food as an attempt to control his digestion issues? Was it food insecurity that led to his desperate dash towards anything he can get in his mouth? Roscoe is currently on a homemade diet (beef, rice, vitamin supplements, pre/pro-biotics) because he was not tolerating the commercial food being fed in his foster home. He's being fostered with multiple pets and his foster mom has found what works best for his needs and her schedule. His new family can certainly find another solution to support his tummy woes, or continue with this homemade recipe. His housebreaking is on track, he will go to the door and circle to let you know he's ready. Wearing a belly band and being kept to a schedule has further promoted his good habits. He’s smart, crafty, and has learned “sit”. When offered treats, you have his full attention so he's highly trainable.. Roscoe can get mischievous if left for longer stretches, a long walk or playtime in the yard would be best before leaving him home alone for any length of time. Let's roll, Roscoe is your ride or die in the car. And keeping in line with that free spirit, he's not a fan of crates, like at all... He loves playing fetch followed by snuggles on the couch for afternoon naps. He accepts grooming and handling with ease and was a fan fave at his last vet visit receiving a perfect report card. Roscoe puts his whole heart into everything he does, including falling for his person. When he loves you, it’s with his whole heart, a truly cosmic and spiritual connection, no reservations. He’s hilarious, snuggly, intense.. a total character, the complete package. We can't paint the full picture of Roscoe's past, but it appears to have embedded some big feelings that he's just now learning how to deal with. By introducing basic guidance to his world, and lots of love and positive reinforcement, he's learned to 'roll with the barks' so to speak... Life is a journey and Roscoe is quickly learning just how sweet it is..

Roscoe needs structure, patience, love and a home that can handle both his GI needs as well as appreciate his behavioral 'opportunities'. A home where he's the apple of your eye, no other pets. An owner who won't fold under pressure and bend to his will by feeding him off their plate (his soulful eye game is strong and not for the weary). As a larceny deterrent, no kids under 10.. He could easily turn them into a foodie accessory after the fact. If you’ve got a big heart, Roscoe will fill every ounce of it with his undivided love.. He’s a fixer-upper who is full of potential and zero interest in sharing you. If you're a previously approved applicant and would like to learn more about Roscoe, please reach out to our Adoption Coordinator directly. If you're new to GMPR (welcome!), please submit an adoption application here: https://www.gmpr.org/adoptionapp.html. His adoption fee is $375.

With very heavy hearts we share the passing of GMPR alumni, Munchkin.

From Munchkin’s loving Mom and Dad, Kelli & Mike-

“We were so blessed to gain a little more time with Munchkin these past couple of months to get in that one last camping trip, fire, swing and snooze in the hammock, walking adventure to explore a new place, catching rays on the front porch and all the snuggles and snacks he enjoyed so much.

He came from a rocky start in life filled with trauma and neglect before he arrived at the rescue so it took time to earn his trust, but with time, love, and training, we saw him flourish into the affectionate, goofy and sassy pug he was always meant to be. Even better is that his golden years made him forget all of the bad things that happened so long ago. His body may have been failing him, but his spirit stayed strong to the end with a side of peanut butter to ease him into his final sleep as he slipped peacefully away.

There's so much more we could say...so many memories to share and pictures to post, but we wanted to be sure to thank everyone that helped us with him along the way, especially the GREEN MTN PUG RESCUE and the Milton Veterinary Hospital💚

If you have something to share, please provide below🐾

Until we meet again at the 🌈🌉, we love you and will miss you deeply, Munchkin❤️”

☀️As summer sizzles and the sun beats down, it's important to keep our furry friends safe from the sweltering heat.☀️

But when is it too hot to walk your dog outside?

🌡️Firstly, pay attention to the temperature outside. If the weather is soaring above 85°F (29°C), it's best to avoid outdoor activities, especially if your pup is a wrinkly dog breed prone to heat exhaustion like Bulldogs, Pugs, or Huskies. Consider going out for an early morning or late evening walk when the pavement has cooled down a bit. Always test the ground with your hand—if it's too hot for your palm, it's too hot for your dog's paws.

🚰Hydration is key! Just like us, dogs need plenty of water to stay cool and hydrated. Bring along a portable water bowl and offer frequent breaks for your furry friend to drink up. And remember, never leave your dog in a parked car, even for a few minutes. On a hot day, temperatures inside a car can skyrocket to dangerous levels in no time.

🤒SIGNS OF HEATSTROKE IN DOGS:
* Excessive panting
* Drooling
* Rapid heartbeat
* Dark or bright red tongue and gums
* Vomiting or diarrhea
* Weakness or collapse
* Glazed eyes
* Dizziness or disorientation
* Excessive thirst
* Increased body temperature (over 104°F or 40°C)

🚨If you notice any of these signs in your furry friend, it's crucial to act quickly. Move them to a cooler area immediately, offer small sips of water, and wet their body with cool (not cold) water. Once they are out of the heat, call your vet immediately. Heat stroke can be life-threatening if not addressed promptly, so always prioritize your dog's well-being, especially in hot weather.

🐾So, next time you're gearing up for a walk with your furry friend, remember to keep an eye on the temperature, stay hydrated, and prioritize your pup's comfort.

Deb Wiggett

Hi, I am Deb Wiggett and am very excited to be a board member for the Green Mt. Pug Rescue. I look forward to working with a fantastic group of people for such an amazing cause. I am mom to Kelli Mazzella and Amy Frye who constantly make me proud with their life's accomplishments. I also have a son, Tim, who has volunteered with GMPR. My 10 year old grandson, Luke, loves attending the annual Pug Social.

My first experience with Pugs was back when I was a teenager. We spent our summers camping in Maine. There was an elderly couple who owned a sweet female Pug named Blossom. She was such a friendly girl and loved seeing her on walks. I grew up with a Pekingese named Muffin. She was very attached to me since I spoiled her so much. My next family pet was an amazing Pug named Winston. We adopted him in October, 1998 and he grew up with my kids. He was a very intelligent boy. The kids and I started attending GMPR events shortly afterwards. Pugtoberfest was a memorable event. Winston was the only Pug to stick his entire face into a bowl of water of cut-up hot dogs. He won me a picture frame which I still have to this day. Losing him in 2014 was the worst day of my life. I now have a crazy 8 year old Pekingese, Cali, who is so spoiled.

I have volunteered for GMPR for many years. I look forward to assisting the team and the puggies who need our help to make their lives so much better.

We are excited to announce that Kristen has taken on the role as Secretary within the board of directors. Thank you so much Kristen! ❤️❤️

Kristen Griswold - Secretary

I've lived in the greater capital district of New York state the majority of my life. I studied Latin and psychology at Union College and after receiving my masters at SUNY Albany, I began teaching Latin in Clifton Park. My husband and I live in Rexford, NY with my pugs and his cats; it is a mixed marriage but we make it work.

One of my first goals as an adult was to get a dog, so six months after getting a full time job, and after a lot of research about different dog breeds, I settled on the pug. I fell in love with their big personalities and their lazy dispositions. My first pug, Basia, led me to seek out other pug people. I joined the Albany-Capital Region Pug Lovers Meetup where I became aware of GMPR. After a few years I began fostering pugs and eventually I took over as organizer of the Meetup group. I've fostered many dogs, mostly pugs and pug mixes, much to the consternation of my current pugs, Maximus and Luciana.

When I'm not trying to wrap a belly band around a squirming pug, I'm probably doing something related to teaching or Latin. I'm the webmaster for the Classical Association for the Empire State and also on their board. I've taught mostly middle school students for 20 years. Pugs and middle schoolers listen about the same amount, but I do clean up much less p**p at work.

After many years of fostering, I'm happy to help GMPR serve pugs in need in new ways as a board member.

Kelli Mazzella - Volunteer Coordinator

As an avid animal lover, I first fell in love with pugs after watching one of my favorite childhood movies, The Adventures of Milo and Otis. When I was in middle school, our family adopted Winston who was a part of our lives for over 16 years and got us introduced to the Green Mountain Pug Rescue (GMPR) in attending their many events, such as the Pug Social. In college, my future husband, Michael, and I encountered our first feline rescue, Chloe, who gave birth to a litter of kittens where one of her daughters, Marie, captured our hearts and both were with us for nearly 18 years. It wasn’t until the winter of 2016 that we adopted our first pug rescue, Munchkin, from GMPR. That spring, I joined the GMPR family as a board member transitioning to roles of secretary, volunteer coordinator and eventually as president. I did depart in October of 2022, but remained as an active volunteer, adopted our second pug rescue, Han Solo, in September 2025 and I’m so happy to be back on the board as of June 2025 with my fellow pug peeps!

I grew up in Essex, Vermont and after high school graduation, I moved to Albany, New York to attend pharmacy school at the Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. After completion of my doctorate in 2008, I moved back to Vermont to do a 1-year residency in hospital pharmacy practice and I stayed on at the University of Vermont Medical Center to provide patient care and teaching the next generation of pharmacists. As a goal, I hope to pursue future education in veterinary pharmacy and apply my expertise to GMPR and the pug community.

Amy Frye - President, Adoption & Transport Coordinator, Website Manager

I am a native Vermonter and has always had a pug in my family since I was a child.

My first pug was our family dog named Winston and he was the reason why my family fell in love with the pug breed. When I was in college, I adopted my first pug of my own from a fellow student who was moving back to Taiwan after graduation and couldn't take him with her. His name was Sky and even though he had some handicaps due to a car accident when he was a puppy, he was a happy pug. Sky and Winston loved going to the GMPR Pug Social's which is how I was introduced to the rescue.

I am a graduate from the University of Hartford, CT with a Bachelor of Art degree in Web Development and a graduate from Champlain College in Burlington, VT with a Master of Science degree in IT Management and a certificate in CyberSecurity. I work remotely for an IT consulting company.

I live in Underhill, VT with my fawn pug named Stewie, GMPR Alumni, Wally, GMPR Alumni, Bensun (pictured) and Rat Terrier, Chance. My sister, Kelli, adopted Munchkin from GMPR in January 2016 which lead to me joining GMPR as a board member.

Patti Whittemore - Home Visit Coordinator

I was born and raised in central Vermont and have been an animal lover my entire life. It didn’t matter what. If I could help it in any way, I would. I moved to North Carolina in 1993 and was involved in Reptile Rescue. I’ve fostered iguanas, monitor lizards and large snakes for Triangle Iguana Rescue in Raleigh. After moving back home and losing my precious Bichon, Madison after 14 years, I applied to be a foster for GRMR to fill the hole in my heart. I filled that hole with my very first foster. A deaf, blind, bossy black Pug named Lucy. She was the queen of our house and we new in the first hour she would be a “foster fail”. We fostered and hospice fostered many Pugs for GMPR and I was on the board for a short time previously. Life happens and after having to step away when life got overwhelming, I’m so grateful to be back on this amazing team! I now live in Rutland with 2 of my 3 grown sons, an English Bulldog named Delilah, and 10 chickens. I work for a local Financial Advisor. I have attended many out of state GMPR fundraising events, as well as our very own Pug Social. I look forward to seeing everyone at the Social. That’s my happy place. Surrounded by all the dogs.

Karen Price - Social Media Manager

I grew up in Fonda, NY and currently reside In Schenectady, NY with my 3 fur babies Vera, Pearl, and Nemo. I’ve been an animal lover from the beginning so I attended SUNY Cobleskill earning a BT in Animal Science. Oddly, I landed in the Human Resources field of work but spend most of my free time with my pups. Pugs have always been my favorite breed and I fulfilled a life goal when I got my first pug in 2022. I began fostering dogs in 2022 for another local rescue and began fostering for GMPR in 2023. Rescue work has became my life passion and I’m honored to have the opportunity to serve on the GMPR board and continue volunteering in a greater capacity. I love to travel to pug events all over and meet new pug people so if you see me, say Hello!!
