Do you have a fearful dog?Maybe your dog barks at other dogs or people? Or perhaps he tries to hide and run away from a situation?Check out this video. Being ready for any opportunity in the moment is a great way to fast track your fearful dog’s training. This was such a special moment. We were talking about an exercise with Stella, and all of a sudden this young boy, a friend of her son’s, appeared at the top of her driveway with a skateboard in hand. Stella , a very, very fearful six month old puppy, was reassured immediately by her guardian. Not only did she get reassured, but the young boy was being communicated with and understood that he didn’t need to come down the driveway any further, and that she would pass on his message to her son. Although I was there for a training session Stella ‘s mom knew immediately took action and was aware that the focus needed to shift to helping Stella work through this new fearful trigger that had just appeared. The key takeaway here is that we were prepared!!We created a positive experience for Stella so that the next time something like this may occur, she’ll be able to pull from this experience and hopefully be even more confident and comfortable. If you are seeing signs of concern, reluctance, fear, or reactivity from your dog, or are unsure of what to make of your dog’s behavior, set up a call with us! There’s really no right or wrong way to walk your dog. My main rule is to simple give your dog the ability to make choices! This means if you’re holding your dog tight on leash 24/7 and correcting them for everything they’re doing wrong not only can they NOT make choices but they’re surely going to be reluctant to try!Sometimes yea, giving our dog too much opportunity to take the lead isn’t always the best thing depending on where you are, and what’s happening nearby, but the more you try to head out on an outing with your pup to give them more lead to sniff and explore - in time- you both will learn to enjoy walking better TOGETHER.How often do you let your pup to lead the way?#getpawsitive

Are you holding your dog back when you open your front door?Sticking a leg out to prevent them from darting? Embarrassed by their behavior? Here are 6 Top Tips to consider when helping your dog be calm at the front 🚪 door: 1. Teach a Station! We love using a Magic Mat. when you teach them where to go and what to do they’ll be that much more successful.2. Consider the distractions, duration, and your movement away from the dog as all areas that will need to be trained to help your dog. If he gets up off the mat, ditch your no’s and eh ehs and instead use that as information that you asked your dog for too much. Go back a step! 3. Consistency and repetitions are your best friend. The numbers will be in your favor so build a wonderful foundation of reinforcement from all angles before expecting perfection.4. Practice often when you don’t actually need to open the front door! This will provide you and your dog with a less stressful and more enjoyable session. 5. Pay attention! Watching your dog and going his pace will help you better understand what adjustments you may need to make. Sessions should remain short.6. Teach a release cue so your dog knows when his job is done!💥pro tip: use a long leash on your dog when practicing for added safety and hands free training. How does your dog do when you open the front door? Taking your puppy ( or dog!)on an outing? If so, consider these 4 tips:1.Reward your puppy for noticing new things around her. Just exposing your puppy to a new place and new things isn’t good enough. But pairing seeing all the things with a yummy food reward will help create that positive connection for her. 2. Have an exit plan! What if it’s too much? What if there’s an off leash dog in the area? What if……. Know where to go or what you can do to help your puppy feel safe in the moment. This can be a specific skill you ask of your pup, a certain area you move to or where you will depart from. 3. Keep the distance! You want options for your pup. Being a successful distance to begin will allow you to not only scan the environment more easily but will help to keep your puppy from feeling overwhelmed.4. Be sure to keep your outings short and pawsitive. Socialization for your puppy is not about the quantity of outings and inundating your puppy with all the things around her for a long period of time. How well your are settling her up for success on the planned outings you DO go on? By keeping it short and positive you’ll be on your way to a happy, confident and well-socialized pup. 🩷Was this helpful? Don’t forget to 💌 Share 📌 Save 🐾 Follow along for more #getpawsitive
