Udo A Z and Cameron Swales Triumph at Alnwick Ford International Horse Trials

The Alnwick Ford International Horse Trials is a super event that brings together some of the finest horse riders from around the world. This year, the spotlight was on Scottish rider Cameron Swales and his remarkable horse, Apollo.

Their win in the new Houghton Country CCI1*-S class was not just a victory but a testament to their hard work and the strong bond between rider and horse.

Riding his own six-year-old Udo A Z, known at home as Apollo, Cameron was second after dressage on a mark of 26.9. He added 3.2 showjumping time-faults to that, but was flawless cross-country to beat the dressage leaders, Germany’s Josephine Schnaufer-Volkel and Bush Pepper AS, into the runner-up spot.

Cameron said: “I was quite shocked to win – Apollo has only done two events this year, both at BE100 level, but we love Alnwick Ford and thought, ‘Why not?’.

“I got him when he was a just-backed three-and-a-half-year-old – a blank canvas, and he’s a big horse and still growing, but he can really shift across country. He loves the dressage and cross-country but the showjumping has taken a while to come.

He’s matured so much over the past few months, though, and I was delighted that he jumped a double clear round here. He’s the most lovely character and very easy to handle – he’s like a big dog.”

Cameron, 19, rides full-time and runs a yard with his mother in West Lothian.

He added: “It’s been a really good weekend – I rode my top horse, Millies Law, in the CCI3*-S on Friday and we are now qualified for the CCI3*-L at Blair Castle, and then Apollo won.

It’s been lovely and sunny, the cross-country and showjumping tracks have been great – so much effort has gone into them and into making the going very good. It’s such a well-run event – it’s been like having a wee holiday!”

Eddie Macken and the one and only Boomerang
Once in a lifetime a horse like Boomerang comes along. Something so special that they go way beyond the normal and Boomerang certainly did that. Over the period 1975–1979, Macken and Boomerang were to win or take second in a record-breaking 32 major Grand Prix's or Derby events across Europe and in the United States. Boomerang helped Macken top the World Computer Ratings in 1976, 1977, and 1978, while amassing £250,000 in prize money - record winnings at the time.

Is It Good To Have Filly And C**t Factors In A Pedigree

Harold Hampton was the first to “discover” pedigree configurations of filly and c**t factors, and Clive Harper tested the ideas with hard science.

Through studying thousands of pedigrees, these researchers were able to identify pedigree patterns that were consistently present in the best performance horses and the best breeding stock.

One of the key things they established was that better fillies and c**ts have pedigree patterns that differ from each other. The following is an outline of what they found:

Filly factors: The statistics show that good performance fillies or mares have multiple lines of daughters of a superior sire and/or both sons and daughters of an exceptional mare.

C**t factors: Better performance c**ts and stallions have the opposite—they have multiple lines of sons of a target mare and/or sons and daughters of a superior sire.

Research of countless pedigrees of great racehorses reveals an unusually high percentage of top racehorses are in**ed or linebred to famous mares. — Ken McLean, Tesio, Master of Matings, 1984, p. 49 When Clive Harper, a student of Harold Hampton, took his scientific training and applied it to pedi...

Can The Thoroughbred Still Jump?
The Contraversy:

A new industry narrative has arisen questioning the Thoroughbred as a viable sport horse for Olympic style sport and as a legitimate source of jump genetics. It goes like this: The Thoroughbred isn't a jumper breed, and it can't jump high, and while it may have had a jump at one time, that it no longer does, and therefore is useless for upper level competition or as an cross for sport horse breeding.
