I want to take a minute to explain something publicly, because I get asked about it often:

I don’t sell Vienna.
Not because I’m gatekeeping, not because I’m being difficult-but because it’s a very personal, long-term project for me.

I’ve watched what happens when a variety or a rare gene gets into the wrong hands:
People sell everything they produce, quality drops, the market flops, and the work that good breeders put in turns into trash almost overnight. I’m not willing to contribute to that cycle.

Before I ever offer Vienna to the public, I want to be producing consistently-type, fur, health, and predictable outcomes. That takes time. I’m not rushing it, and I’m not gambling the future of the line on promises.

I’ll be honest: my bridges have been burned too many times.
People say all the “right” things to get animals, then they do the exact opposite. At this point, trust has to be earned, not assumed.

For anyone who breeds, buys, or sells-here are a few reminders that matter in keeping markets stable and breeds strong.

Seller Red Flags
• Sells the entire litter without any evaluation
• Doesn’t pose, handle, or assess rabbits correctly
• Prices everything crazy high regardless of quality
• Offers rabbits to literally anyone with cash
• Hides faults or line weaknesses
• Makes no effort to improve the breed

Seller Green Flags
• Culls-responsibly and consistently
• Poses, evaluates, and selects based on standard
• Prices animals based on actual quality
• Shares faults and line weaknesses honestly
• Screens buyers instead of rushing sales
• Willing to answer questions and help you learn
• Breeds with purpose, not for quantity

Buyer Red Flags
• Only cares about price, not quality
• Wants “breeding pairs” without learning the basics
• Plans to sell every baby regardless of type
• Won’t listen to guidance from the breeder
• Jumps around buying from everyone
• No interest in improving- just producing

Buyer Green Flags
• Asks educated, thoughtful questions
• Wants to understand faults, strengths, and
goals
• Values quality over quantity

I love my Vienna project. I’ve spent years working on it, and I want to do it right. When the time is right-and when I’m producing rabbits I’m truly proud of- I’ll share. But not before.

Quality takes time. Trust takes time. And protecting the breed always comes first.

EU vs American MPL, what’s the difference? A question I get asked a LOT.

In this post I’m going to debunk some common myths and claims about Mini Plush Lops! Buckle up and let’s unpack this together!

—
Standard of Perfection - which SOP should you follow?

Let’s look at some facts! The American Rabbit Breeder’s Breed Standard Committee has said that the European Standard for MPL WILL NOT PASS as is. Changes must be made. So why breed to an SOP that has been said won’t pass? That seems so counterintuitive. So… that’s where the Americanized SOP comes in! Ashley Green (w/ Little Plantation Rabbitry) and I have created the Americanized the Standard of Perfection with the intent to get this amazing breed passed.

Quality Differences:
Most “Euro” only breeders sole focus is color. Not type, fur, temperament, or many of the other things that go into creating a consistent, quality animal that can be shown in the future. This is why you unfortunately see so many subpar plush (rabbits with no structure, ears didn’t lop, pinched hips, thin/fine bone, long/narrow ears, the list goes on and on.) while only a handful of breeders are trying to correct these structural problems.

Then, the new breeders lean heavily on “Well, the person I got my rabbits from sold them for $1500 each, so I should be able to do that and make tons of money!” Only to find out since they don’t have a cult following, they can’t sell their animals for astronomical prices. Not to mention, that it’s insane that someone would purchase an unshowable rabbit for that much! On top of it, they can’t pose due to lack of sound structure, the rabbit is in a continuous molt(or has a terrible fur quality), or they have MAJOR temperament issues (OR bonus, a combo of all three!).

Part of breeding rabbits should always be ethics. When breeding rabbits, say you get 6 rabbits in the litter. Even when breeding Grand Champion to Grand Champion, not ever single rabbit in that litter will be brood quality!

Most of these “EU ONLY” breeders sell out of the nestbox. You can’t even BEGIN to tell quality before 4 weeks. The longer you keep the rabbit, the more you can tell about them. Picking your “keepers” when they’re hours old shows me you are interested in one thing. Color (well, that and money 🤣) and you can tell color at this age IF you know genetics, which the majority of these people who imported, unfortunately do not.

Fur Quality:
I cannot tell you the amount of DMs I get saying “I was told Euro MPL had better quality fur so I spent a small fortune and now have a rabbit that feels like a Brillo pad!” Or “I spent the money to get a Euro MPL from a known EU breeder and now I have a rabbit that is constantly molting when the breeder claimed it would not molt!”

This is a very common problem. The breeders ABSOLUTELY know what they’re doing, they know they’re swindling people, they still do it anyway because they want that $$$. Look, if you’re in rabbits to make money.. you’re not an ethical breeder at all.

Takeaway:

MOST plush make FANTASTIC pets, EU or American, but breeding rabbits with structural defects, poor temperment, and terrible fur ultimately harms this breed’s progress to get recognized.

You can breed to whatever SOP suits your fancy, but ultimately, breeding to the European SOP does not help MPL get recognized in the states. If anything it makes it more difficult. Do your research, find out what works for you, but don’t be fooled by the “EU MPL are better” crowd.

Edit to add for clarification;
I’m not “Anti Euro Plush”. I’m advocating for people in this breed to do better and not be color (or bloodline) blind. Ultimately, I want this wonderful breed to succeed in the states, but constantly having to fight with people who breed genetic defects, poor structure, poor coat, etc just because it’s IMPORT bloodlines is disheartening. Being of import blood doesn’t make it any better if it can’t even produce viable offspring because the hips are so pinched.

This sweet little blue AFL buck is still looking for a great home.

Hasn’t been shown, but I don’t see any DQs. His sire has 2 grand champion legs.

He is a true American Fuzzy Lop, not a fuzzy Holland.
