I have worked hard to become an international pet portrait artist by taking the beauty whimsy and heart that makes your pet unequivocally unique and turning it into paintings that are one of a kind.
Oh, this face! This mushy, smushy, toofy, tongue-ie, stoic nugget of absolute delight! He won my heart instantly, and I think it's easy to see why! Every picture I was sent was perfection, and I could happily do a whole collection of this darling chonk, aptly named Murph.

I am so glad I was asked to paint this portrait. The contrasting colors side by side really made my brain work, and you can see in the photos here that I deviated from my normal approach, which is to start with the eyes. The reason for that is because there were SO many ways I could mess up on this, and I couldn't bear painting those eyes, only to bu**er the background and have to start over! In the end, I needn't have worried, because Dude came through beautifully, and I just want to give him the biggest hug of thanks!

Oh, this was a fun one! I've been asked, in the past, to paint a retriever with a bird in its mouth and would never do that. But this?! When my client Ashley suggested this rubber chicken, I was all in! I love everything about this painting! The dapple light, the water dripping off the chicken's foot, the little red reflection on his collar baubles 😍 But those warm brown eyes and little cooked toofs just melt my heart!

Thank you for being the most incredible cheerleaders a girl could ask for. For three years you've hung in my studio holding your painting of Zorp. You have been reassuring, excited, and quietly supportive from your place there on the wall. I bet you didn't know, when you took the time to take that photo, that you were going to be a life changing moment in someone's life. But you have been. I think so much of both of you and that small act of kindness, so early in my watercolor journey, was, has been, and will continue to be, a source of assurance on those days when my artist soul needs it most. Thank you, for all you do, the people that you are, and for being there for me (without knowing you even were!).

This sweet floof was named Fantasy, and I loved creating this ethereal fantasy scene as a tribute to this very special girl.
Today is the final day to submit an entry to the pet portrait competition! I submitted Emmanuel a couple weeks ago, but just realized I never posted his entry photo! I shared what I THOUGHT was the finished pic, but his beak was still bugging me so I redid it... for the fourth time🙈😅
I've had the pleasure of working with the ladies of a few times now over the past year. They've been great supporters of my art and great about commissioning pieces that helped me grow in my watercolor work 💗 That, along with knowing Emmanuel's story, made this seem like a great opportunity to work with them again! And this time in acrylic! I proposed this idea of him in a crown and collaborated with them on what elements would make it extra special. I know how much I treasure my painting of Extra, and hoped this would be as special to them. I gifted them the original and offered the digital version in hopes it could be used to fundraise for the incredible work they are doing with animals there on their farm!
Another year of in the books! Best of luck to every artist that entered, the work is crazy amazing this year!!
Originally, my client wanted one painting of her sweet boys together, but then... she went and sent me the most personality capturing reference pics of each of them EVER so I asked if she'd be willing to do two!? So happy she said yes, because I just adore these two portraits!

So excited to share my first painting of our baby girl Rain! Last week I did a reel of a messy little watercolor kitty and had some interest in a tutorial on how to do these cute cat eyes! I myself saw a timelaps video of them done in pencil from a person on tiktok (much faster and easier!) but decided these might be a fun challenge for budding watercolor artists! Once you get the basic concept of these eyes, there are endless variations that you can play around and practice with! This week's Friday Fun is a little on the intense side! My son "commissioned " this for his grandpa! Can't say no to that!
A little something different for this week's Friday Fun! It is actually prompted by a new song from Abba, which is not what you are hearing here because Facebook only allows for 30 second reels 😕 but there is a link to the Abba song in the comments below! I grew up listening to them on my DAD'S old records and their new album has a beautiful song about bumblebees! If you have ever had a garden that depended on these incredible creatures then you know how you miss them when they aren't there! So plant something bee friendly, skip those chemicals, and just notice the bumbling buzzing beauties and say thank you for all they do to make this world a better place!
Welcome back for more Friday Fun! This week's sweet face is of a resilient go getter named Callie! She's 15 years old but still young at heart and always on the go! She has faced some hard times in her life, but for the past 13 years has had her best friend by her side! It is always so special for me to get to "meet" these beautiful souls, to hear about their journey, and to get a glimpse of the bond and love they have with their human. This week it's Friday Fun with Frankie! A 13 year old Wheaton Terrier that loves nothing more that taking a car ride with the top down, the wind in her hair, and her dad at the wheel! This was my first "in motion" painting and I really loved creating the wind blown effect of that soft fur! Oh, yes, and how do I know it's soft? I got to meet this sweet girl in person and give her luvs when her mom came to pick up her portrait! Two rare events rolled into one and such a wonderful treat for me! Thank you so much Susan! Last week was cuteness, this week is... intense cuteness? This is the second owl for my brother, and since it is for him, and since it just happened to be raining, I did a thing he suggested! What he SAID was "sprinkle some dye on paper and go out in the rain and make a painting from it" but I HEARD was "complete a watercolor painting, sprinkle it with ground up paint THEN go out in the rain!" Made my @flintcandleco wax WORK this week!!" It was so fun!
Well I'm not sure how it happened, but somehow a "painting of my brother/nephew's dog for my nephew's birthday" turned into two owl paintings for my brother for no special reason whatsoever! This first one is my is my pick, and the closest thing to a Disney character that I have painted in quite some time! I am LOVING it!! Next week will be the the flip side, so if you need a very grumpy owl in your life be sure to check back next Friday!! Until then, I hope this adorable little baby brightens your day!
Welcome back for more Friday Fun!! Sooo, I haven't drawn or painted a horse in 20 years (ish) A loooong time! Unless I am having an actual senior moment at 42 years old, and have just forgotten, lol! But I have been around horses all my life and have a little red horse just like this one! You may have seen him in previous posts! This however is not mine, this a commission of a beautiful mare named Phoenix! I actually had a go at a different pose originally but she is such a solid rich color the angle just wasn't working. The movement of her mane really breaths life into this shot though. And I love her soft winter coat, the cool blue gray of the background and how it sets off her warm tones! In this video you get to see a few tricks for adding depth and shadow by using opposite colors yellow/orange over blue/purple.
