Congratulations to Jimmy on being the most adorable chemotherapy graduate!

Jimmy battled a**l sac infections and was found to have a very small nodule associated with one a**l sac. To be cautious, and to help relieve the chronic a**l sac issues, both a**l sacs were removed and submitted for histopathology. To everyone's surprise – a**l sac carcinoma was found in both a**l sacs!

This is a cancer that may grow to a point of causing bowel movement issues and may also spread to local lymph nodes within the pelvis and abdomen, and eventually to abdominal organs, lungs, and even bone. Thankfully, Jimmy did not have any evidence of cancer spread at diagnosis.

Jimmy received chemotherapy every 3-4 weeks for five doses to help slow further progression of the cancer. Jimmy may have 1-3 years of quality time with his family before the cancer progresses and causes a quality-of-life issue. We will see him every three months to monitor for cancer spread, in hopes that we may find disease progression before he feels sick, giving us an opportunity to slow progression even further in the future.

We look forward to each visit with this handsome boy! Way to go Jimmy, Jimmy’s loving family, and the Care Center Oncology team!

Put your paws together for another oncology graduate! Meet Betsy! 🐶

Betsy was diagnosed with osteosarcoma (bone cancer) and had four ribs removed by Care Center Surgical Oncologist, Dr. Aki Otomo, in June. She then received six doses of carboplatin chemotherapy with our Medical Oncologists, Dr. Corrine Camero and Dr. Carissa Norquest. Betsy graduated from her treatment just in time for the holidays with clear chest x-rays!

We look forward to seeing this sweetheart back for her next recheck in a couple months! Way to go, Betsy!

It might be a new year, but we’re still celebrating our Oncology graduates! Let’s hear it for George!

George had a high-grade mast cell tumor removed from the left muzzle. He received 8 doses of chemotherapy to help reduce the risk of cancer spread. George felt great and remained as rambunctious as ever throughout treatment!

It was a joy for the Oncology team to spend this quality time with him. We are so proud of George and his family for this amazing accomplishment!

With more snow on the horizon for our area, we have another cold weather safety tip for your furry family members!

Even though our pets have a built-in fur coat - they still get cold!
❄️ Keep the fur: Longer coats mean more warmth - don't closely shave your pets' coat in the winter.
❄️ Consider a coat: For short-haired breeds, consider putting a coat or sweater on your pet. Coverage from the base of the tail to the belly provides extra warmth in the frigid temperatures.
❄️ Ditch the bath: Drying their fur after a bath can take too long and washing too often can deplete essentials oils and increase dry skin in the winter time. If your pet must be bathed, contact your veterinarian for a moisturizing shampoo recommendation, or seek the assistance of a professional groomer.

Stay warm out there, everyone! Please know that our Care Center Cincinnati and Care Center Dayton teams are here for you should you or your furry family member need us.

As we navigate the record-breaking snow fall in our area, it's important to consider some cold weather safety tips for our pets - including paw protection. Our pets' paws are susceptible to damage from various winter elements such as snow, ice, and salt.

Consider these tips to keep those furry toes safe and warm!
❄️ Snow bo**ies: The best way to protect your dog's paws is to cover them. Booties come in many different colors and sizes to fit all breeds!
❄️ Vaseline or paw balm: If your pet refuses the fashion statement of a snow bo**ie, try putting petroleum jelly or paw balm on their paws before going outside - this will create a barrier between their paw pad and the snow and ice for a short period of time.
❄️ Towel: Keep a dry towel near the door to wipe your dog's paws when coming inside from a walk or potty break. It's also important to wipe your dog's paws clean of any salt and other chemicals found on the sidewalks and streets.
❄️ Short walks: Dogs can get frostbite or hypothermia in less than 20 minutes in extreme temperatures, so it's important to keep walks and time outdoors limited.

Remember that your Care Center teams are here for you and your pet should the need should arise!

Meet Rocky! 🐶

This energetic 6-year-old German Shepherd started his cancer journey with us at Care Center Dayton back in July after being diagnosed with multicentric lymphoma.

While a multi-agent protocol wasn’t an option, Rocky began treatment with a single-agent chemotherapy plan using doxorubicin - and what a fighter he’s been! He responded beautifully to therapy and has been thriving at home. Along the way, he developed a pesky skin infection, but with antibiotics and medicated shampoo, Rocky was back to his usual self in no time.

Rocky wrapped up his final treatment on November 7th, and he’s been full of energy and mischief ever since! We’re so proud of him and grateful to his loving family for giving him the care and support he needed. Go, Rocky! 🎉

The holidays come with beautiful decorations, yummy treats, and joyous festivities, but it’s important to keep in mind that many holiday favorites are hazardous to our furry family members.

🍫 Delicious Dangers
Although it’s tempting to share treats with our pets, it’s best to keep their diet the same this time of year, to avoid any stomach upset. Always keep toxic foods and alcoholic beverages away from your furry family members.

🔌 Watch Out for Wires
Be sure to keep wires, batteries, and ornaments out of paws' reach. A wire can deliver a potentially lethal electrical shock, a punctured battery can cause burns to the mouth and esophagus, while shards of breakable ornaments can damage your pet's mouth and digestive tract.

🎄 Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree
Christmas trees pose a few potential threats to our furry friends. Make sure that trees and ornaments are tightly secured. Steer clear of tinsel for decoration – as it is very tempting to pets – but can result in an obstructed digestive tract, requiring surgery.

🕯 Caution Around Candles
Whether you are lighting a menorah or scented candles, make sure you do not leave any open flames or candles unattended. Curious paws and wagging tails could knock them over.

☃️ Snow Globes
These beautiful collectables are made with ethylene glycol, the same chemical used in antifreeze, which is highly toxic to all pets. If a snow globe breaks, the sweet smell can attract pets, but ingestion can lead to potentially fatal intoxication. Be sure to keep fragile things away from pets and promptly clean any accidental breakages.
