November is Pet Cancer Awareness Month 🎗 Cancer is the leading disease-related cause of death for domestic dogs in the US. Cancer can seem extra scary for pet owners because our furry friends can't tell us how they're feeling.

To help you feel more equipped, here are eight common signs of cancer you can watch for in your pets. If you notice one or more of these, don't panic! Many of these symptoms are vague and do not 100% mean your pet has cancer. If you're concerned about a symptom your pet is experiencing, always contact the clinic and discuss it with our team.

November 8th is International Day of Radiology! 🩻
Radiology is a powerful diagnostic tool that our doctors use daily. In our practice, we use x-ray, dental x-ray, and ultrasound regularly both to diagnose pets and monitor their general health. Being able to peek inside your pet's body is invaluable to so many cases!

For curious minds: pictured below are actual images taken at NAH. The top row are Ultrasounds (left to right: kidney, bladder, large intestine). The middle row features dental radiographs (left to right: canine tooth and first two premolars in a dog, lower molars in a dog). The bottom row are x-rays (left to right: dog knee, dog abdomen, pregnant dog).

Happy Halloween!! 🎃👻
Whether you're headed out to trick-or-treat or hosting a spooky shindig, take a moment today to make sure your pets have a safe evening, too!

🍬 Keep those goodie bags and candy stashes out of reach! Most candy will cause a severe upset stomach and chocolate is toxic. Small plastic toys can pose an obstruction risk if eaten.

🍭 If your pet is dressing up, make sure they're comfortable wearing their costume. Headpieces and loose or dangling pieces can get caught or make it difficult for them to walk. If wearing a costume is too stressful, a halloween bandana or bow is a great alternative!

🍫 Make sure your pet is wearing their ID tag and their microchip information is up to date. The door opening repeatedly for trick-or-treaters presents a perfect opportunity to slip outside and get lost.

We hope you have a safe and happy Halloween! 🧡🖤 If your pet is wearing a costume this year, be sure to comment below with pictures!

Pumpkin season is in full swing! 🎃
Did you know that pumpkin can be a great fall treat to share with your dog? Fresh cooked or canned pumpkin is packed with nutrients. It's also a great low calorie additive for food that can make them feel fuller without adding on calories for those plumper pups. Additionally, it helps to add some fiber to their diet which can help keep their GI tract moving like it should.

This sweet recipe for Pumpkin Peanut Butter Treats errs more on the side of tasty than nutritous, but it's still a fun fall activity! And we know your dog won't say no to some new treats to try 😉

Our favorite receptionist has been with us for 4 years. She juggles the ever-ringing phones and messages with ease and the schedule wouldn't run nearly as smoothly without her ☎️ Her favorite part of her job is all the cute puppies and kittens coming to see us for the first time!

Thanks for all your hard work, Liz!

For Vet Tech Week, we’re taking time to highlight our amazing staff! First up: Emily 💙

Emily has been with NAH since we first opened in 2011. She runs all our clinical trials and handles all the office work it takes to run the clinic. You can bet if a patient will fit in her pocket, she’ll put them right in there for a snuggle 🫶 Her favorite thing to do at work is watching the doctors take care of a satisfying cyst!

Thank you for all you do, Emily!

October 14th-18th is National Veterinary Technician Week!! 🩺🩹
At NAH, we love to take this week to celebrate our whole support team. While you may not always see them, our technicians, assistants, and receptionist are working hard alongside our doctors. They help to keep the schedule running smoothly, prepare supplies and procedures for the doctors, keep patients comfortable while they stay, administer medications, draw blood, clean the hospital, and so much more!

We're so lucky to have such a rock star team of support staff that show up every day ready to pour love and care into your fur babies 💙

Did you know that September is National Mushroom Month? 🍄
Mushrooms from the grocery store are tasty for dogs and their people, but wild mushrooms can pose a real danger to curious dogs who might see them as a snack.

🍁 Some wild mushrooms are harmless, while some are deadly to dogs. The danger lies in the fact that they can be difficult to identify and many species look very similar. The safest option is to prevent your dog from eating any wild mushrooms.

🍁 If your dog has ingested wild mushrooms, contact the clinic or Pet Poison Control immediately. If possible, save a sample of the mushroom that was ingested for identification.

🍁 A dog that has eaten mushrooms can present with a number of different symptoms depending on the variety. Common symptoms of toxicity include vomiting and diarrhea, excessive salivation, abdominal pain, and lethargy. More serious symptoms can include muscle tremors, disorientation, and seizures.

Stay safe this fall season by keeping close watch on your dog when they're out and about to prevent ingestion! And celebrate National Mushroom Month by cooking up some tasty (store bought) mushrooms at home 😋
