Today is World Donkey Day. Did you know..

*Donkey* is *synonymous with dumb....!*

There have been *centuries old misconceptions* surrounding *donkey intelligence!*

People believe *donkeys to be stubborn* . Actuality, donkeys are *thinkers* and if something startles them they will freeze and *investigate* before moving forward. They like to *decide for themselves!*

Male donkeys are called *jacks* . Female donkeys are called *jennies or jennets* .

Donkeys are sometimes used to *protect goats, sheep and other animals* !. A donkey will fight…a dog, coyote, *even mountain lions!*

Donkeys don't like to be in rain as their *fur is not waterproof,* like horse!


Today is *World Donkey Day* to show respect for one of the most enduring and respectable animals in the *Equidae family* . Throughout history, it has served the world as both a mount and a *beast of burden* in some of the most *challenging terrains* and forbidding climates, and has done so with pride and endurance.

*Two subspecies* of the donkey the *Somalian and the Nubian* were *bred* together to produce what we think of as the modern donkey.

As the US celebrates National Animal Poison Prevention Week (March 20-26th), below is a list of common poisons for cats and dogs we have encountered in our local setting
Dog Poisons:
1. Tick/flea washes
2. Chocolate
3. Mouse and rat Poisons (rodenticides)
4. Human food: Rotten human food remains, avocado, alcohol
5. Grapes & raisins
6. Fertilizers
7. Aflatoxin poisoning especially from mouldy corn-based dog food
Cat Poisons:
1. Flea/tick medication for dogs
2. Household cleaning products
3. Use of human medications on cats, especially pain killers
4. Mouse & rat poisons (rodenticides)
5. Consuming rats which had been poisoned
6. Onions & garlic

Report cases of suspected poisoning immediately to your vet !

Any people upon seeing me go wild! guessing, oh he must be Siamese.... any kittens? could I have one? I'm willing to pay.....
In my heart, I'm like calm down people, I'm just a random cat and can you believe that I just moved into the neighborhood because this lady here is nice to my kind!
Lesson, be NICE to CATS,you never know who may just stroll through your doorway or Window.

Tiffany a 2-year-old female Boerboel, one of clinic favorites, died of suspected aflatoxicosis. We at Four Paws 🐾 Clinic are crossing our veterinary fingers that it's just an isolated case. Nonetheless we urge our clients and others to take extra precaution during this period to minimize the chances of exposing our pets to aflatoxins. These measures include sourcing dog feed from reliable and trustworthy suppliers, storage of the feeds in a dry place, away from moisture and minimizing the use of corn-based feeds, alternatively, introduce mycotoxin binders in animal feed. If your pet suddenly refuses to eat, please do not wait it out, immediately call your veterinarian to improve the chances of saving your dog. We encourage rice-based diets for our pets during this period of potential widespread aflatoxicosis challenge in the country.
