“Shared” this is not my dog but really good info here!!!
If you’re a dog owner, please read.
Luna slept in the living room with me last night. Most of everything was put up besides a box on the floor with a pan I got for Christmas, some other little things, and an unopened pack of this gum.
I woke up this morning to her curling up around my head and knocking things off the side table. She was shaking and I looked over to see pieces of this packaging everywhere. She started throwing up so I took her out back, ran back in to grab the peroxide, called Drew, and he raced home from work while I done my best to try and get the gum out of her system. Thankfully he was at the meat locker today so he was close.
He got home, picked her up to take her to the truck and she started seizing. We took her to Fosters vet and they were amazing. Took her right away to start her an IV and gave her meds to make her throw up more just to be sure everything was out. She was in hypoglycemic shock and Blood work showed that her liver enzymes were extremely high. Average is 5-120. She was pushing 1000 and they were continuing to rise.
They called poison control and they advised them to get her a medicine that I can’t remember the name of ASAP to help prevent liver failure. None of the surrounding areas had it so we rushed to Mississippi state where she will be for the next 3ish days and monitored 24/7.
They were honest and told us they they really weren’t sure if we would make it in time and although we’re still not sure if she’s going to be okay, I do believe she’s in the best hands right now. We’re just praying that we got her there soon enough.
I was unaware about all of this until today. So if you’re a dog owner and don’t know either….
Xylitol, the artificial sweetener in most sugar free gum/candies, is VERY TOXIC to dogs. 1 pieces of gum can poison a 10 pound dog and cause liver failure and Luna (43 pounds) ate a full 40 pack by herself.
I didn’t think she would mess with anything in that box, but I knew she could if she wanted too. And unfortunately, she did. That’s on me.
Although I can’t change anything about this current situation, you best believe I’m about to be throwing away a bunch of stuff and being more mindful of things that she could potentially get in to when she’s out in the house.
Please do the same for your fur babies because it can happen in a heart beat. Or even worse, it can happen without you knowing and by the time you figure it out, it’s too late to do anything about it.

We love you our sweet Luna girl and I am so so sorry that this is happening to you.🤎
🚨🚨🚨Edit to add:
Other names for Xylitol to look for on ingredient lists:
* 1,4-anhydro-d-xylitol
* Anhydroxylitol
* Wood sugar
* birch bark extract
* birch sugar
* d-xylitol
* xylite
* xylitylglucoside
* Zylatol
* Xly
It can be found in certain peanut butters, toothpaste, face products, sugar free anything, etc
Here is a quick read on it as well. This is very serious and I hate I didn’t know the dangers of it before.

🚨🚨🚨Edit:
The peroxide was to induce vomiting. She was hacking but couldn’t get it up. 1 tsp for every 5 pounds. Max of 3 Tbs! You basically just have to eye ball it though in situations like this. Do a little bit and wait a second. If still nothing, do it again! It only works if you catch it soon enough. Don’t try it if they ate something they shouldn’t have 1-2 hours ago. It’s already to late at that point
Xylitol is a sweetener that is safe for humans but poisonous to pets.
