In just 4 sessions with us so far, Cruzi and his parents have made significant progress in their development. Cruzi began very frustrated when he saw another dog. Giving his parents the knowledge of what to do is making their walks much more enjoyable.

When we talk about mental and physical enrichment, it doesn’t always have to appear as you’re sticking to a daily routine. Playing games with your dog like teaching them to go over, under, or through obstacles help their confidence, awareness, and gives them a well balanced work out!

The perfect setting for an early morning decompression walk and a cup of coffee sounds like a perfect start to our day.
•
•
Decompression walks are dog walks in which the dog is allowed to explore and sniff its surroundings, either off-leash or on a long line. They are “a walk where the dog is allowed freedom of movement in nature” and it is a term coined by @cognitive_canine that we really appreciate.
•
•
All dogs experience significant benefits, but for reactive or fearful dogs the effects are life-changing.
•
•
Physical benefits: A long hike where the dog can run around is going to tire the dog out. Physically tiring out your dog, however, is only one piece of the puzzle.
•
•
Mental/Behavioral Benefits: Dog decompression walks can lower a dog’s fear, anxiety, and stress and help them feel more calm, cool, and collected.
•
•
Training Benefits: Dog decompression walks also create an opportunity to work on check-ins and recall with your dog. Reward your dog for coming back to check in with you; practice random recalls as well with high value treats to reward them with when they come running back to you.

For those of us with fearful or reactive dogs, imagine a calmer dog that slowly but surely responds to your desensitization and counterconditioning sessions — what a dreamy vision for those of us trying to help our dog become more centered and calm.
Tips to be more consistent with your training sessions:
1) Say cues one time. If you repeat cues and say it one time one day, and three times the next, you are not consistent. If your dog repeatedly doesn’t do the cue on the first time, use hand signals or move your dog to a less distracting environment and continue working.
2) Watch extraneous movements or sounds when training. If you say SIT and bend over your dog while saying that, what happens when you stand upright or are sitting in a chair? Your dog doesn’t just pay attention to the specific information that you want him to. He sees it all and tries to learn the patterns. If the pattern changes, he will be confused.
3) Don’t get frustrated. If you are using a good reward, whether it is going outside, chasing a tennis ball, a belly rub or a treat, your dog wants to do the behavior that will result in the reward. If you are having trouble with a behavior, make sure you are consistent with your request.
4) Have someone watch you train. Don’t tell them what you are working on and see if they can identify what you are asking for.
5) Practice. You are learning patterns as much as your dog. Train your dog for at least 15 minutes per day broken down into small 2-5 minute segments if necessary.
6) HAVE FUN! Training is supposed to be fun for both you and your dog 🐶

We love getting our pet parents involved in training! It’s so rewarding to see you guys enjoy training your dogs. Working regularly with your dog helps you to understand their needs better, making you an even better owner as well. It can also be a great source of exercise and open up new possibilities for both of you (or the whole family!)—the better behaved your dog is, the easier it is to take her along wherever you go. Thanks @jdawgiedog for the assist!
